There is no such thing as a perfect woman, and Nothing but Thirty screenwriter Zhang Yingji wanted to convey this message in telling the stories of three different women, who have found very different ways to climb their own mountains.
Wang Manni is a woman who will climb any mountain as long as she finds it challenging. Zhong Xiaoqin is one who will only climb if she has someone to go along with her. She will not overexert herself, and she will definitely stop once she has reached a comfortable place. Gu Jia, on the other hand, has already started to think about reaching the peak before she even starts the climb, regardless of whether she is alone or has company.
In a sense, the scriptwriter purposely created Gu Jia as the perfect woman of thirty. She is married, with a successful husband and a young son. She is living the dream, but Gu Jia does not feel complete. She feels lost. She is flawed. She has episodes of succumbing to her own greed and disregard to those around her.
“She is someone who chases alter perfection.” said Tong Yao (who portrays Gu Jia). “Obviously, this is stressful for those around her. She hides things. She isn’t perfect, but in front of others, she has to stay perfect.”
Her chase for perfection and her stubbornness to maintain this image has effected many of the relationships in her life. She chases after what she believes is right for others. Because of this, she and her husband start to see and value things differently, which puts a strain on their relationship.
Gu Jia’s personal struggles give life to the character. Many viewers are able to relate to her, and, through her character, find a shadow of themselves. There’s still a lot left that we can learn from the women of Nothing but Thirty, but maybe like them, we too can find the courage in ourselves to walk on that road which is truly meant for us.

During that time the train was usually filled with construction workers heading out to start their work. On that particular morning I found myself drawn on the shoes of men sitting about 10 seats across from me.
I sat examining the shoes of men. Men from different walks of life, holding different jobs, thinking different thoughts, living different lives and despite what they did and how they looked, they all had something in common. They were all of the working class trying to achieve their dreams.
One day each of those men has to visit a shoe store to buy a new pair of shoes, a type that fits their working needs. For a short time those shoes look so good. Then one day they lose their shine; they no longer look as good, but guess what? The shoes feel right. Feet have found their own home within the comfort of those shoes.
If those shoes could talk, what kind of a tale do you think they would tell? If your shoes could talk, what do you think they would say about you? Would the story be about a journey filled with joy and fun? Or would the story be one filled with disappointment and regret?
We choose the shoes. Where we take them and when and how we wear them are up to us.

In the 1986 movie nothing in common, Jackie Gleason’s character, Max Basner, gets fired from his job as a clothing salesman. The scene, shot on a boat, shows Max’s despair about being out of work. I was looking for some gesture that would allow Max to show his feelings.
Jackie had far more experience at everything than I did, and at first I was frightened. What could I possibly tell “The Great One” about acting? Out of fear I decided to direct by suggestion, and I sat down with Gleason to talk about the scene. “So Max is and, right?” I said.
Gleason nodded.
“And he’s probably still carrying his pens with his name on them – the ones he used to hand out to his customers, right?”
Gleason nodded.
“So what would you want to do with the pens after you were fired?”
He was silent for a moment. “Why don’t I throw them overboard?”
I stood up and turned toward the crew. “Hey, everybody. Jackie has a wonderful idea. Let’s shoot it”.
After filming the scene, Gleason called me over and said with a smile, “Garry, what kind of wonderful idea am I going to have tomorrow?”

In the exciting thriller Baby Driver, the actor and DJ, Ansel Elgort, 23, plays a music-obsessed (对音乐着迷的) getaway driver trying to escape from a life of crime.
Your character gets turned on to new music from iPods he finds in stolen cars. Who has influenced your taste?
Eve Beglarian, a composer (作曲家) and friend of my mother’s, made me my first iPod (playlist). One of the songs was Easy by the Commodores. The auditions (试演) for Baby Driver weren’t going well, and director Edgar Wright said, “Do you know any songs that you know every word to?” I remembered Easy. He said, “When you’re ready, I want you to sing it.” He told me that that was what got me the role. I guess I have to thank Eve.
At times the movie plays like a very complex music video.
They filmed very rhythmically. If I wasn’t wearing earphones, I was wearing an earwig — like a radio, but it’s tiny and you can hear things in your ear. Whatever the audience hears, we heard while filming.
How much did you get to drive?
They only let me drive when no one else was in the car, so that wasn’t often. They didn’t want me to kill Jamie Foxx.
You’re known for your brave and confident fashion choices. When did you start caring about style?
I must have been in the sixth grade. I wore the same red Adidas sweatpants every day, a white T-shirt and blue shoes. I was like a cartoon character.
After young-adult films like The Fault in Our Stars and Divergent, were you eager to be in a more adult film?
I don’t look at The Fault in Our Stars as a teenage movie. I looked at it like, this is a great script (剧本) and a good character, and I was excited to do it. But of course I was looking forward to being part of a “real” movie. If it meant working with Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx and Jon Hamm, sign me up.

C.His excellence in driving. | D.His performance of a song. |

C.He is a driving enthusiast. | D.He has starred in two films. |

Richard Sears and Nick Gough traveled 37,500 kilometers around the world and passed through 37 countries. They did this to support grassroots education project in Africa, Asia and South America.
The pair, who set off from London, thought their expedition was over when the vehicle started to fail. When the tuk-tuk broke, they were only 70 kilometers from their destination. They decided to pull it the rest of the way. The tuk-tuk, which weighs 800 kilograms, was pulled in turns by Richard and Nick over three days. They witnessed how education could free sex-workers in Delhi and victims of human trafficking in Nepal.

My first stop in the UK was the British museum and I was particularly interested in Room 41. In that room, I saw the oldest sentence ever found written in Old English. Archeologists (考古学家) believe it is from between 450 and 480 AD.
The next stop was Westminster Abbey. At the Poets’ Corner I saw graves of famous writers, such as Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and Samuel Johnson. The list can go on and on. Another thing on the Abbey grounds that you should not miss is a colorful glass window in St. Margaret’s Church, as you walk up to the Abbey. The window, about halfway up the left side of the church, honors William Caxton. He was the first person to bring the printing press to England and set up his printing business near the Abbey, probably because he was likely to get work from the government offices in the area. Caxton may not be as well-known as the writers in Poets’ Corner, but he played a very important part in standardizing English.
My final stop was the Tower of London, which was the symbol of power of the people who changed English. This castle was built by William the Conqueror after he defeated King Harold II in the Battle of Hastings during the Norman Invasion in 1066. After the Normans took over England, the official language became French for hundreds of years, and this was the time when many French words entered the English language especially words related to upper-class life such as words about government and cooking.
So that was my trip.

The Nobel Prize for Literature from the Swedish Academy on October 13 is only the most recent achievement of a man who has long been among the cultural masters of the modern age. He has “created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”, according to the academy.
Although Dylan, 75, is not really seen as a literary(文学的) writer, he has given the world over 50 years of creative output.
In his 1985 album Biograph, Dylan wrote about the attraction of folk music to him. Rock songs “weren’t serious enough or didn’t reflect life in a realistic way”, he explained. Folk music, compared with rock music, was “a more serious type of thing. The songs are filled with more sadness, more joy, more faith in the supernatural, much deeper feelings”.
Dylan’s music and lyrics(歌词) did speak to a generation of people during the 1960s. His lyrics often spoke about great political causes, such as the civil rights movement or the campaign against the war in Vietnam. The 1960s were a time of change, a time when the young were demanding that their voices be heard.
Some people were puzzled that a literary prize had been handed to a singer. But poetry and song have long been found together. Greek poet Homer would have sung The Iliad. In the Middle Ages, wandering minstrels(吟游诗人) performed their poems to music just like Dylan does.
Far from just being a fashionable move, giving the prize to Dylan can be seen as bringing back an old literary tradition. The millions whose lives Dylan’s songs have made better—among them poets and novelists and fellow musicians—will surely welcome the award.
1. Why could Bob Dylan receive the Nobel Prize for Literature?A.He performed his poems to music. |
B.He brought back traditional music to life. |
C.He wrote a large number of poems. |
D.He developed a poetic way of music expression. |
A.Rock music contains more faith in the supernatural than folk music. |
B.Folk music and Rock music are both very serious. |
C.Folk music conveys emotions more strongly than rock music. |
D.Rock music describes life in a more realistic way than folk music. |
A.the connection between songs and poems |
B.the great influence of Homer’s poems |
C.the style of poetry in the Middle Ages |
D.the difference between a poet and a singer |
