My teacher, Ms. Dixon, sent me to sit in the corner for a while to quiet the class. I didn't understand at all. I knew how to operate the record player. And besides, not everyone had steady hands or the know-how to play a record without damaging it.
So why was it, I wondered, that the class got upset when I tried to take over and show Marcia how to handle the record player the right way? I was only trying to help, as I had done many times before. I also couldn't understand why the teacher had sent me to the corner. I was taught to always help my classmates if they didn't understand or know how to do something. If anything, I thought the class was wrong in their judgment of me. I thought the teacher was certainly wrong in siding with them.
When everyone was excused for recess(休息), Ms. Dixon kept me in. I figured that I was in serious trouble, but I still didn't understand how my actions could have caused the teacher to react like this. I had never been in trouble so bad before.
"Why am I here and not at recess?" I asked Ms. Dixon.
The teacher didn't say a word. Instead, she placed a word puzzle in front of me. I guessed Ms. Dixon wanted me to do it, so I got out my pencil and attempted to solve it. This was like no other puzzle I had done before. It was difficult, with words I didn't understand. I raised my hand for help, but Ms. Dixon ignored me. Maybe Ms. Dixon was just keeping me in to protect me from the other students' mean words.
I struggled with the word puzzle until I was about to give up and throw it away. But I was not a quitter, and so I stayed with the challenge. Once I got one word. I was able to get another, and soon I had solved the problem by myself.

The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was packed. My school teachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous. Soon, it was my turn to talk.

“Were you Mark’s math teacher?” An old man came to my office and asked. I nodded. “Mark talked about you a lot. I want to show you something,” he said, taking a wallet out of his pocket. “They found this on him when he was killed in the battle. We thought you might recognize it.”
Opening the wallet, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. I knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which I had listed all the good things each of Mark’s classmates had said about him. And that happened 20 years ago.
Mark was in the third grade class I taught. All 34 of my students were dear to me, but Mark was one in a million. Very neat in appearance, he had that happy-to-be-alive attitude that made even his occasional misbehavior delightful.
Mark also talked without stopping. I tried to remind him again and again that talking without permission was unacceptable. What impressed me so much, though, was the sincere response every time I had to correct him for misbehaving. “Thank you for correcting me, Sister!” I didn’t know what to make of it at first but before long I became accustomed to hearing it many times a day.
One morning my patience was growing thin when Mark talked once too often. I made a new-teacher’s mistake. I looked at Mark and said, “If you say one more word, I am going to tape your mouth shut!”
It wasn’t ten seconds later when Chuck shouted, “Mark is talking again.” I hadn’t asked any of the students to help me watch Mark, but since I had stated the punishment in front of the class, I had to act on it.

An Amazing Dollar
It was spring in 2018. The whole school was bathed in beautiful sunshine. A boy, Belscher, was anxiously walking up and down the campus, his right hand in his pocket.
Belscher was an average student, but not an average person. From a young age, he had started working part-time to help support his family. He had struggled to grow up, and he was also positive and generous. He was always willing to help and was popular among his classmates. Recently, however, he had changed. He now worked longer hours, trying to earn more money. It seemed every dollar, even every cent, meant a lot to him.
That morning Belscher noticed a dollar on the floor. After putting the dollar in his pocket, Belscher began to feel uneasy. As the day progressed, he began to feel worse and he couldn't even concentrate during class. The one dollar bill felt like a fire burning in his pocket. He kept thinking about Mrs Mattison, office dean o£ the school, who always taped （粘贴）lost items on the whiteboard and asked the students to do the same.
He was so lost in thought that he didn’t even hear his deskmate call his name, “Are you OK, Belscher?” His deskmate, Megan Rose asked. "Sure, " Belscher paused, unable to complete the sentence. His heart began to race and his mind went blank. "Why, why are you asking?" Your face is so red!” Rose whispered.
