There’s nothing sadder than reading about a lost child in the newspaper or seeing the story of a child gone missing on the news. Fortunately for us as parents there is a way to avoid this type of tragedy through GPS tracking for children. Global positioning system technology can make it so that we need not worry about our children being lost as much as we used to in the past.

GPS systems for kids are small devices that can be worn or implanted (嵌入) in a watch or attached to the child’s clothing or backpack. It will then deliver information to you about the child’s location at all times providing you with peace of mind. The GPS systems can be programmed to send information in intervals (间隔) as short as 15 seconds.

You can imagine how much more relaxed you would be when you’re able to log   (登录) into your computer at any time and know within several yards exactly where your child is. Some of the GPS kids units even have a panic button that the child can push to send an immediate alert in case of an emergency. This notification will go both to you and to the GPS tracking service so that authorities can be alerted.

For small children the GPS tracking device can be as small as a watch and will run on batteries   (电池) for up to 24 hours before needing to be recharged. For older children you can even place a device in their car to monitor their driving habits and where they are driving. Personal GPS units for kids are not cheap and the smaller the device the higher the price. Can you really say that anything is too expensive when discussing the safety and well being of your children? In addition to the cost of the device you will also need to pay a fee to the GPS tracking service. In the world we live in sometimes it is difficult to be too safe and these GPS kids systems can provide many parents with added peace of mind.

1. According to the passage, what can we learn about GPS systems for kids?

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是来自青年科学家奖比赛的四位决赛选手谈论制作视频并向评委做报告。

【推荐1】Four finalists (决赛者) from the Young Scientist Award competition talk about making a video and giving presentations to the judges.

Maria studied the effects of energy drinks and produced one herself. If you’re having a block, wait a day or two and look at it with fresh eyes. You’ll find inspiration somewhere. But make sure that you have enough time to complete your video! Waiting until the last minute, when you are all rushed, isn’t a good idea.

If you have a plan laid out before you start anything, it helps to keep you moving forward.

Erik invented a material which can be painted on football boots to stop them attracting mud.

I think the best ideas come from everyday life—because that’s where they are going to be put to use after all! Start thinking of ideas with your family and friends and write down every possibility which comes into your head. But make sure your project is realistic.

David has found a way of working out how long bicycle tyres will last.

For your video, pick a concept that you can explain so that it’s visual (形象化的) and interesting. People have different learning styles, so use different methods to explain the same concept. There were some finalists who had memorised a lot more scientific facts than me, but I was able to take a scientific concept and explain it in a simple way.

Anita produced lights which come on and go off automatically and can be attached to a bicycle.

Making a great video, which gets all the ideas across, isn’t as easy as it looks, so it’s good to look at past entries (参赛作品) from finalists and learn what makes them successful. And one of the hardest parts is fitting your information into two minutes. It seems like plenty of time, but it goes by so quickly!

1. What does Maria suggest people do when making a video?
A.Draw up a plan first.B.Find new ideas from daily life.
C.Share their thoughts with judges first.D.Finish their videos as soon as possible.
2. What’s Erik’s opinion on best ideas?
A.They should be visual.B.They needn’t be realistic.
C.They should be related to daily life.D.They must be discussed with others.
3. How did David explain his idea?
A.By introducing a new method.
B.By making it clear and interesting.
C.By presenting various scientific facts.
D.By using the same method to show different ideas.
4. How does Anita prepare to make a video?
A.She asks her family for help.B.She searches for a realistic idea.
C.She collects the latest information.D.She learns from past finalists’ works.
5. What does Anita think of the video preparation?
A.It doesn’t need to hurry up.
B.It’s easy to make a short video.
C.Collecting information is difficult.
D.It’s hard to put all the information within 2 minutes.

【推荐2】One advantage of the Internet is shopping conveniently online for clothes; one disadvantage of the Internet is also shopping conveniently online for clothes.

“Nothing fits,” said Lam Yuk Wong, a senior in electrical and computer engineering at Rice University. “Everyone says this. They order clothes and they don’t fit. People get very unhappy.”

Wong and her design partner, Xuaner “Cecilia” Zhang, are Team White Mirror, creators of what they call a “virtual (虚拟) fitting room”. Their goal is simple and consumer-friendly: to let online clothing shoppers have a perfect fit and a perfect look when shopping every time.

Both women are from China, Wong from Hong Kong and Zhang from Beijing. They both order most of their clothing online. They got the idea from their own experience as consumers and from listening to the complaints of friends and relatives. “They say, ‘The color is wrong’ or ‘I got the right size but it still does not fit.’ We want to make it like you’re in the store trying on the clothes,” Zhang said.

Using a Kinect developed by Microsoft for use with its Xbox 360 video game player,

Zhang scans Wong and turns   her image into, in effect, a virtual model, keeping Wong’s dimensions (尺寸), and even her skin and hair color. “We put the clothes on the shopper’s 3-D body models and show how they look when they are dressed,” Wong said. So far, Wong and Zhang have adapted the software to show dresses and shirts, and they are now working on shorts.

Asked if she thought men as well as women might be interested in using their virtual fitting room, Wong said, “I think their wives will care about this, so it will also be important to men.”

1. Why is shopping conveniently online for clothes a disadvantage?
A.Clothes bought online may not fit.
B.Students may easily get addicted to it.
C.It attracts more online clothing shoppers.
D.It causes shoppers to waste too much money.

4. What did Wong think of her virtual fitting room?
A.It is perfectly developed.
B.It will have its market share.
C.It is limited to women shoppers.
D.It is like a kind of video game player.

3】A study found wireless signals are able to pass through bags and suitcases to judge the sizes of dangerous metal objects and identify them. “These items could include weapons, chemicals, laptops and batteries for bombs,” the research team said on Tuesday.

Research suggested that Wi-Fi can now be used to estimate the volume of liquids such as water, acid, alcohol and other chemicals for explosive material. The study led by researchers at the Wireless Information Network Laboratory (WINLAB) in the School of Engineering showed a wireless device with two to three antennas (天线) that could be fitted in existing Wi-Fi networks.

The detection system analyzes what happens when wireless signals go through and bounce off objects or materials. The approach, which the paper states, works by separating the wireless interference (干扰) caused by two factors of objects — the material and shape. “Most dangerous objects such as weapons are usually metal or liquid, which have significant interference,” researchers said.

When it was tested on a backpack, the accuracy rate topped 95 percent. “But the accuracy dropped to about 90 percent when objects inside bags are wrapped. And the tech could save lives if used in museums, stadiums, theme parks or schools,” the team said, noting its design can inspect bags or luggage without being an exposure to privacy.

It uses channel state information (CS) that is readily available in low-cost Wi-Fi devices. “This could have a great impact on protecting the public from dangerous objects,” said Yingying Chen, a co-author of the study, “There’s a growing need for that now. In large public areas, it’s hard to set up expensive screening equipment like what’s in airports. Manpower is always needed to check bags and we want to develop a method to try to reduce manpower. “

The peer-reviewed study, which recently won a best paper award at the 2018 IEEE Conference on Communications and Network Security, is now published online. “Future work will continue to focus on improving the accuracy of identifying objects and imaging shapes and volumes,” researchers said.
