There were initially 16 elephants in the herd, which left their nature reserve in 2020 to wander in nearby counties of Pu’er City. One adult elephant dropped out and two were born in the journey.
Officials became alert in April 2021 when the 17-member herd arrived in Yuanjiang County of Yuxi City. Another two adults left the herd for home while the rest continued to travel north. They came upon Eshan and walked the streets for six hours after authorities evacuated pedestrians (疏散行人) and vehicles and warned residents to stay indoors.
Later, the endangered animals were seen in the Hongta District of Yuxi, where authorities established an on-site command center to monitor their movements 24 hours a day and prevent them from entering populous (人口稠密的) areas by creating barriers and using food as bait (诱饵). Over 360 people, 76 police cars, dirt trucks and nine drones were called out, and 18 tonnes of elephant food were prepared.
Chen Mingyong, an Asian elephant expert in Yunnan University, said: “Migration of Asian elephants is common, but it usually happens among several habitats in a certain area. It was the first time that China had recorded such a long-distance northward migration of wild elephants.”
“We can’t tell what their destination is,” he said, suggesting that the migration might not even have a destination. “It is possible that the chief of the herd lacks experience and led the whole group to a wrong path.”
“Up to now, the giant creatures have resulted in 412 cases, damaging 56 hectares of farmland in the counties of Yuanjiang and Shiping alone, causing direct economic losses of about 6. 8 million yuan.”
“For these 15 elephants, all we can do at present is to issue early warnings and evacuate residents in time to decrease losses.” said Chen.

One minute you’re searching for something serious, like a recipe(食谱) for dinner, or something for work, and the next you’ve been sucked in by endless videos of cats doing funny things after seeing an attractive title in your suggested videos column(专栏). They’re interesting, and you can end up spending hours watching kittens make funny noises or mistiming jumps. But why do these videos so often end up becoming popular? What makes them so fascinating? And whyare they more popular than dog videos?
First, let’s talk about stereotypes(成见). When many of us think about dogs,we imagine them rolling over onto their backs, tongues hanging out, or making a mess. They seem trusting and innocent(单纯的)—and they do silly things. Cats, on the other hand, seem somewhat more controlled and independent. There’s a reason why we have an expression “cool cat”. In short, cats seem more serious—and clever. If we can put one over on a cat and make them do something like getting in a box that slides down a hill, it’s funny. But with a dog, it’s not as funny because they trust you-and it’s easier. Tricking a cat, due to their wiliness(狡猾),has more payoff.
The Internet is filled with videos of cats making funny faces or reacting strangely. But why are they so funny? Well, simply—it’s unexpected. If you saw a cat walking down the street coolly or observing and preparing to attack a mouse, it wouldn’t be funny. But if that cat was walking sideways, wearing a silly costume,or becoming best friends with the mouse, suddenly we might start to laugh. Watching a cat that is normally impressive walk carelessly or pull a face is funny because it’s not something we would normally connect with that animal. It’s like watching someone who is normally very serious laugh loudly.
So the next time you see one of those funny behaviours of cats in awkward situations or videos that make you laugh, try to remember why it’s so funny. And spare a thought for all those dogs that are trying to give us pleasure too.

A female giraffe was born at Brights Zoo in Tennessee recently—but unlike her mother she was born without any spots an unusual one.
Standing 14 to 19 feet tall, giraffes are the tallest land animals in the world. When mothers give birth, the young giraffes are already 6 feet tall, and other than in especially rare cases, they’re born covered in brown spots. Brights Zoo in Limestone, Tennessee, announced that it welcomed the birth of a reticulated giraffe (网纹长颈鹿) without any spots on July 31st.
“Giraffe experts believe she is the only solid-colored reticulated giraffe living anywhere on the planet,” the zoo said. The zoo’s director, David Bright, said zoo staff had been reaching out to zoo professionals across the country inquiring about how unusual the giraffe could be. Zoo officials said the only record of a reticulated giraffe being born without spots was in Japan in the 1970s.
Mr. Bright said that the new giraffe might not have survived if she had been born in the wild. “Being solid-colored, she may not be able to hide quite well,” said Bright. He also thought it was likely that the giraffe would be a “key target for illegal hunters” because she’s so unusual.
Pictures of the young giraffe can be seen on the Brights Zoo Facebook page. In a picture, she, without her spots, stood next to her mother, a normal giraffe, in stark contrast. The zoo is asking the public to help name the newborn. People can choose one of four names available on the zoo’s Facebook page. The names and their meanings are: Kipekee, meaning unique; Firyali, which means unusual or surprising; Shakiri, meaning she is most beautiful; Jamella, which means optimistic.
Bright said that the zoo looked at thousands of names and their meanings before settling on the four available. “Those four are the four the family really loves,” Bright said. “So if she’s named one of those four, we’re very happy.”
According to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, there are only about 16, 000reticulated giraffes left in the wild — a more than 50% drop from approximately 36,000giraffes 35 years ago. There are about 117, 000giraffes across nine subspecies(亚种).Many of them are endangered or critically endangered.

From ancient times, tigers were the subject of constant attraction for their beauty, size and sometimes mythical stories related to them. People’s fascination (迷恋) for tigers is obvious from the fact that tigers are still a part of many national symbols and flags. Tigers are the largest cat species. Unfortunately, the population of tigers is fast decreasing. Every part of tigers from tail to skin to nail is traded in the illegal market for very high values. Many tigers are hunted, which is one of the key threats to their existence. They are also caught and raised as pets. 97 percent of the world tiger populations decreased in the last 100 years and only 3,890 tigers are left. If tigers get extinct, we will lose a species. And it also means that enough forests have been destroyed, which may endanger many other species.
For us, tigers are symbols of wildlife’s fighting for survival. It reminds us of the dangers we face because of people’s over-exploitation (过度开发) of the nature. It’s an opportunity as well. Many efforts are on the way to double the tiger population by 2024. Strict national and international laws are against hunting and trading tigers. As a result, the number of tigers in the wild has risen for the first time in more than 100 years. Even though this is just a small increase, it’s a huge symbolic victory in our efforts against the destruction of forests and wildlife. It’s very important that we all join together in this effort, not only to save tigers, but also to save our forests.

You can also use other senses when you choose your food. You may like it because it smells good or because it tastes good. You may dislike some types of food because they do not look, smell or taste very nice. Different animals use different senses to find and choose their food. A few animals depend on only one of their senses, while most animals use more than one sense.
Although there are many different types of food, some animals spend their lives eating only one type. The giant panda eats only one particular type of bamboo. Other animals eat only one type of food even when given the choice. A kind of white butterfly will stay on the leaves of a cabbage, even though there are plenty of other vegetables in the garden. However, most animals have a more varied diet. The bear eats fruits and fish. The fox eats small animals, birds and fruits. The diet of these animals will be different depending on the season.
Humans have a very varied diet. We often eat food because we like it and not because it is good for us. In countries such as France and Britain, people eat foods with too much sugar. This makes them overweight, which is bad for their health. Eating too much red meat and animal products, such as butter, can also be bad for the health. Choosing the right food, therefore, has become an area of study in modern life.

That year, Neelim Kumar Khaire made a Guinness world record for staying 72 hours in a glass box with 72 poisonous snakes : 27 monocellate cobras, 24 russell's vipers, 9 binocellate cobras, 8 banded kraits , and 4 common snakes.
Kaire's love for snakes began while he was working at a five-star hotel near Bombay. " Snakes were frequent visitors at my place in Matheran," Khaire said. "I hated killing such beautiful creatures, most of which were harmless. So I started catching and releasing(释放)them in the Sahyadri hills. I once caught a snake and took it to the Haffkin Institute in Bombay. I was told that it was poisonous and too risky to be carried in this way. The happening increased my courage and so began my fascination with snakes.”
Khaire said he first thought of setting up a world record when he came across some reports of Peter Snyemaris staying with 18 poisonous and 6 semi-poisonous snakes in Johannesburg, South Africa, for 50 hours.
“I thought an Indian responsible to create a world record in this field as India is known abroad as a country of snakes," said Khaire.
So, for three days, Khaire lived in a small glass box filled with poisonous snakes at B. J. Medical College in Pune, India. While resting in a chair, he often had to deal with snakes that climbed onto him. But after72 hours, Khaire left the box without a single bite.

She explained that as a child she got a little dog. They grew up together, went everywhere together and were best friends. She even took him to college though he was very old and couldn't get around well. And as he got worse, she stayed by him day and night thinking they would always be together.
But one day, while petting him, he growled(咆哮)and bit her hand. She was shocked. He never did that. How could he turn on her? Friends convinced her to put him to sleep. Unwillingly she did, but admitted that she hated herself ever since. “How could I kill my lifetime friend?” she sobbed.
“Suppose,” I said, “your dog was a genius! Suppose he knew you better than you know yourself. He didn't turn on you. You were too young to know about his getting old and needing to go. He knew you needed a helping hand to let him go. . . so he bit you. And it worked, didn't it?”
She was coming out of her deep sadness. I added, “Is it hard to imagine that dogs have late friends calling them to dog heaven? They never forget who they love. He is there. He still loves you more than ever. He knows you'll live a lot longer than he did.”
She was obviously happy now as she considered my words. We parted with a long hug and thanks. I'm pretty sure her dog was standing behind her, thanking me with his wagging tail and smiling face. Love is the highest kindness.

Many museum workers do not work directly with the objects in the museum; for example, the staff of a finance department prepares budgets and financial reports. Accountant and bookkeeper are typical positions. Staffers in the development department, meanwhile, work to increase museum membership and donations and to plan fund-raisers, such as dances or auctions. Publications department personnel may write newsletters, brochures, or books.
Some museums have an education department responsible for planning talks, teaching workshops, directing tours, or training tour guides.
People who prefer to work directly with a museum's collection have many career options. A person who pays attention to detail may enjoy being a registrar, the person who keeps track of the objects in a museum. Registrars keep records of objects, noting what they are, when and how they were obtained, and whether they are on loan to another museum or on display.
Curators are the people responsible for a museum's collection. One of their duties is to choose items for exhibits; then they work closely with designers who plan the best way to arrange exhibits. Other specialists do things such as arrange lighting or build display cases. Expert craftspeople can also find jobs re-creating historic buildings, such as the Pilgrim village at Plimoth Plantation.
A museum also often employs conservators to repair and take care of its collection. Many conservators are specialists who care for one kind of item, such as books or paintings. The Henry Ford Museum employs many conservators, including some who are experts in caring for antique cars.
Some historic homes, such as George Washington's home in Mount Vernon, have gardens, farms, and woods, as well as buildings. Gardeners are employed to care for the grounds and livestock handlers to care for farm animals.
Museums offer many other career opportunities too. They may have gift shops where sales assistants sell books, postcards, and other items or. restaurants where meals are prepared and served. Depending on one's interests, a museum could be a great place to look for a job.

The news spread quickly, as many people shared the article on Facebook and other social media sites. But pet owners had nothing to worry about—the article was madeup.
Many fake (虚假的) news are harmless, but others might have played a role in realworld events. When it comes to online news, even adults can have a hard time telling fact from fiction. Education experts say kids should start learning how to tell the difference.
Of course, there are plenty of reputable websites you can visit to read the news. Wellknown news organizations, such as The New York Times and the Associated Press, have their own sites.
But many other online “news” sources aren't always reliable. And many students have trouble finding out when articles aren't entirely true or are trying to persuade them to think in a certain way.
Why would someone purposely publish an article that isn't true? The most common reason is to make money. Websites are paid by the companies that post ads on them. Companies want to place their ads on sites that get a lot of visitors. So people create fake news with attentioncatching headlines to try to get users to click on them.
Some of the biggest websites are trying to stop the flow of fake news. Last November, Facebook and Google banned fake news sites from advertising on their pages. Facebook is also working with factchecking organizations to identify and flag fake articles. But experts say the best way to slow the spread of fake news is for people to be more skeptical of what they read online.
1. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the first paragraph?A.To make readers focus on fake news. | B.To introduce the topic about fake news. |

Earlier similar studies always left out one key group of mammals: species driven to extinction by humans.
Scientists often use these maps to predict how climate change will affect species. And because the new ones show species’ footprints, they help scientists b otter see many species have had their numbers greatly reduced by humans for example, through over hunting and the destroying of their habitats.
“Brown bears may lead us to think of Alaska or Russia today but they used to cover all the way from Mexico to Northern Africa before they were widely hunted by humans.” said Faurby.
We usually think large mammals like elephants and lions line in Africa today, but for most of the last 30 million years, big animals traveled all over the Earth. It was only recently that humans drove many of these large mammals extinct, leaving a world depauperate of large mammals.
“Even some huge species that we think of as prehistoric, lived up to the time the Great Pyramid was being built,” Davis said.
Making a database that included every species of mammal was no easy task. It took the research team at Aarhus University months just to piece together existing datasets and fill in missing holes in the data.
Marking footprints on the map for them was even harder. The scientists used both DNA information and data from some dig sites around the world with a powerful new computer algorithm (算法) to predict where the extinct species fit in with mammals that are alive today.
