I’ve been writing for most of my life. The book Writing Without Teachers introduced me to one distinction and one practice that has helped my writing     1     greatly. The distinction is between the creative mind and the critical mind. While you need to employ both to get to a final result, they cannot work in     2     no matter how much we might like to think so.

Trying to criticize writing while it is still in progress is most possibly the single greatest

3     to writing that most of us meet with. If you are listening to that 5th grade English teacher correct your grammar while you are trying to seize a fleeting (稍纵即逝的) thought, the thought will die. If you capture the fleeting thought and simply share it with the world in raw form, no one is likely to understand. You must learn to     4     first and then criticize if you want to make writing the tool for thinking that it is.

The practice that can help you pass your     5     bad habits of trying to edit as you write is what Elbow calls “free writing”. In free writing, the     6     is to get words down on paper non-stop, usually for 15-20 minutes. No stopping, no going back, no criticizing. The goal is to get the words     7    . As the words begin to go smoothly, the ideas will come from the shadows and let themselves be     8     on your notepad or your screen.

Now you have raw materials that you can begin to work with using the critical mind that you’ve persuaded to sit on the side and watch quietly. Most likely, you will believe that this will take more time than you actually have and you will end up staring blankly at the pages as the deadline draws near.

Instead of staring at a blank screen, start filling it with words no matter how bad they are. Halfway through your     9     time, stop and rework your raw writing into something closer to a(n)     10     product. Move back and forth until you run out of time and the final result will most likely be far better than your current practices.

What Can You Do with Used Coffee?

It’s the most popular drink worldwide. According to the British Coffee Association, approximately two billion cups of coffee are consumed every day. But after the beans have been picked, roasted and brewed, the grounds are often     1     of as waste. With the environment and resource consumption such hot topics at the moment, wouldn’t it be great if we could reuse this waste to make something useful? Well, you can.

The company OCHIS manufactures sunglasses. Max Havrylenko, founder of the company, was searching for a(n)     2     substance to plastic. He wanted to “solve the problem of plastic use and overconsumption”, he told the BBC. OCHIS fuses the grounds with vegetable oils, forming a bond. These are pressed into plates which are     3     and flexible. These are then cut into the arms and frames of the glasses. “Don’t worry,” he says. “They won’t     4     in the rain.”

Rosalie McMillan, a London jeweller, uses recycled coffee grounds along with gold and silver to make     5     jewellery. She mixes the coffee with oils and     6     it to heat and pressure to create a compound she calls “Curface”. Her website claims it has a “beautiful surface quality and texture” with similar     7     to hardwood.

What about a coffee cup made from them? Kaffeeform is a German-based company that transforms used grounds and renewable plant-based raw materials into a durable composite. This is     8     into a variety of containers and polished and finished, ready to be sold. So, you can drink your coffee from a cup made of coffee.

And it doesn’t stop there. Even without a factory, you can make use of coffee grounds. They     9     excellent fertilizer. You can mix them with water to make a sepia-toned paint. And the     10     goes on. So next time you finish your morning cup, save the grounds.

Dare to be Dull

A big part of why spontaneous (即兴的) speaking feels so challenging is the desire to always say the right thing in the right way at the right time. But that leads to unnecessary self-evaluation and criticism, consuming precious mental energy and preventing you from     1     engaging in the moment. I often advise people to follow a spontaneous comedy saying: “Dare to be dull.” That is, don’t feel you are       2     to give an exceptional performance. Recognize that there is no single “correct” way to answer a question, give feedback or welcome a colleague —only better or worse       3    .

Another popular saying also       4     here: “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.” Listeners are more likely to trust you when you speak like a man of       5     rather than an actor or a robot. For example, research shows that the most effective speech includes     6     use of fillers such as “um” and “ah.” So when you need to speak spontaneously, refocus your attention on your listeners instead of       7     with your inner critic. Attempting to serve their needs will take your mental spotlight off yourself, relieving the pressure you feel. Tell yourself that     8    , making mistakes, and learning during spontaneous interactions are normal.

Micah, a student of mine, was fearful that his class contributions would be seen as     9    . To avoid embarrassment, he planned and rehearsed the points he wanted to make. But because he was always working to remember them and find the right time to use them, he was     10     and failed to get the most out of discussions. With my help he focused on silencing his inner critic. He began offering more ideas, sometimes imperfectly formed, and in just a few weeks he became less anxious and more confident.

Do you find your fellow classmates are keen on losing weight? If so, you are not alone. Nowadays young people are always talking about weight loss, and it is     1     of them to keep a positive attitude to life. To help you slim down and stay healthy, here are four simple, healthy and dare I say, fun ways I     2     for you.

Have your cake ... for breakfast

The way to     3     weight loss isn't by feeling hungry.

Scientists say that people who started off the day with a treat felt fuller and more satisfied, and that led to their sticking with the program as the day went on. Eating nothing is no way to start your day, so fuel up with a(n)     4     like sugar-free bread. Give yourself protein and a mouthful of something sweet. And most of all, enjoy!

Dr. Andrew Calvin, one expert of Mayo Clinic study is quoted as saying. “If individuals are seeking to maintain a healthy weight or to lose weight, they should seek to get enough sleep as a daily     5    .”

If you find it tricky to wind down at night, turn off the electronics and engage in relaxing activities, like taking a bath or listening to     6     music.

Journal to drop pounds

The best weapons for a dieter? Pen and paper! Women who wrote down everything they ate lost more weight than those who didn't track their food intake. Journaling makes you accountable and more aware of what you're eating, so it makes sense that it'll     7     your eating habits and keep you from     8     chewing if you aren't actually hungry.

Even a tiny bit of exercise helps your health

Even 20 to 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the weeks (broken up into smaller chunks is fine) reduces your risk for all sorts of physical ills. And even 20 minutes a week can improve your mood. It's easy to criticize yourself or burn out if make goals that are     9     hard to achieve, but walking a few times a week is doable and meaningful, too. Thus, do not be mean with     10     for yourself if you can stick to workout.
