According to CBS Minnesota, the golden retriever (寻回犬) named Marvel was the only one in her litter born without a front right paw (爪子). She’s since been taken in by the Williams family in Waconia, whose 7-year-old son, Paxton Williams, had his right leg cut away three years ago.
Rolling Oaks Goldens breeder Barb Felt found the Williams family through a friend, Paxton’s doctor. “When she was born, we knew right away she had a special purpose,” Felt said. “We wanted her to go in a home with someone who had a limb (肢体) difference.”
Paxton was born before the time was enough, which caused the boy to develop a serious problem in his right leg, which stunted the limb’s growth. Three years ago, Paxton’s parents made the difficult decision to have the boy’s right leg amputated and replaced with an artificial limb. Paxton’s mother, Stephanie, appreciates how their new pet addition helps her son normalize his physical differences.
“It gives him the opportunity to tell the kids, ‘Oh, she’s missing a paw, she’s like me,’” the mom explained. “Just like it gives him that voice to advocate for himself.”
Blaine, Paxton’s father, has also been moved by seeing Paxton and Marvel enjoy walks together on trails near their house. “It’s like they knew they were special,” Blaine said. “The amount of emotions was running through me at the time,” he continued. “It was just awesome because she was in the perfect place at the perfect time.”
Marvel might need a wheelchair or an artificial paw of her own as she grows larger and gets older. The family hopes that Paxton will someday be able to run with his artificial leg and that Marvel will be there to run beside him.

Many of the relatives of the 39 people who died in the freezing, airless vehicle are too poor to bring the bodies back to Vietnam.
Bui Huy Cuong, chairman of the people’s committee told the Guardian Newspaper that officials have visited bereaved (新近丧失亲人的) families to encourage them to receive ashes, instead of bodies, because it would be cheaper. But he said families want bodies so they can be honored in traditional funerals and are hoping the authorities will pay. “At the moment, we are not sure if the British or the Vietnamese government will take responsibility for bringing victims back to Vietnam,” he said. “Families know nothing about it. It should be clear soon which government (if any) will take responsibility… how much can British and Vietnamese governments pay, and how much will Vietnamese families need to contribute.”
The brother of 26-year-old Pham Thi Tra My told the paper his family does not want ashes. Pham Manh Cuong said, “My family wishes to bring my sister’s body back home because we all agree we want to see her for the last time.” Pham Thi Tra My was the victim who came to prominence when her final text home was made public in which she said, “Sorry, Mum. My journey abroad has not succeeded. I love you so much! I’m dying because I can’t breathe.”
Nguyen Dinh Gia, the father of another victim, Nguyen Dinh Luong, from Nghe An province, said his family also wants a body. “They did not tell me how much the transport fee is, but told us it’s costly.” he said. “We are asking for help from two governments... We’ve had to wait for many days now and are falling into depression.”
The Vietnamese government has not commented on the repatriations (调回本国). Police in the UK and in Vietnam have made several arrests in connection with the incident that claimed the lives of 31 male and 8 female victims, of whom 10 were teenagers.

A misshapen protein was building up in his body, destroying important tissues. Victims of this disease often die a difficult death.
So Doherty was thrilled when he found out that doctors were testing a new way to try to treat amyloidosis. The approach used a revolutionary gene-editing technique called CRISPR, which allows scientists to make very precise changes in DNA. On Saturday, researchers reported the first data indicating that the experimental treatment worked, causing levels of the destructive protein to decrease in Doherty’s body.
CRISPR has already been shown to help some patients. And doctors are trying to use it to treat cancer and to restore vision to people blinded by a rare genetic disorder. But those experiments involve taking cells out of the body, editing them in the lab, and putting them back in or injecting CRISPR directly into cells that need fixing.
The study Doherty volunteered for is the first in which doctors are simply putting the gene-editor directly into patients and letting it find its own way to the right gene in the right cells. In this case, it’s cells in the liver making the destructive protein.
“It really is exciting,” says Dr. Julian Gillmore, who is leading the study at the University College London, Royal Free Hospital. “This has the potential to completely revolutionize the outcome for these patients who have lived with this disease in their family for many generations.” The patients will have to be followed longer, and more patients will have to be treated, to make sure the treatment’s safe, and determine how much it’s helping. Gillmore stresses.
The promising results potentially open the door for using the same approach to treatment of many other, more common diseases for which taking cells out of the body or directly injecting CRISPR isn’t realistic, including heart disease and brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Firefighters at Pasco County Fire Rescue Station 21 on Thursday were greeted by two children holding the injured bald eagle and seeking help, according to the station’s Facebook page.
The firefighters called Owl’s Nest Sanctuary (保护区)for Wildlife in Odessa for assistance and a volunteer came out to help. "It appears that the eagle was wrapped in the line for about two days, was underweight, and thirsty,” the post said. Florida has one of the densest concentrations of nesting bald eagles in the lower 48 states with an estimated 1 ,500 nesting pairs according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Pasco County is located in the state's west central coast north of Tampa.
After the eagle was examined, it was placed in a container and taken to the sanctuary for treatment where Kris Potter, the sanctuary's director, successfully removed the hook.

"He's eating all his meals with great enthusiasm and doesn't leave a crumb (碎屑) behind,“ the post said. "In the meantime, this big guy is resting and recovering ——he's already looking so much better!”
After the eagle is considered stable, it will be taken to Busch Gardens in Tampa for further treatment, according to the post.
“ Thankfully the eagle appears in good health and veterinarians (兽医)believe that the eagle will fully recover," the post said.
When the eagle is cleared for return to the wild, it will be released in the area around Station 21 , the station said in its post.

When I looked in the mirror, I had to comfort myself that I looked better in full clothes. I was never in the mood to go out. I’d spread my clothes out all over my bed, knowing that I wouldn’t fit into most of them. And when I finally left the house, I’d feel too embarrassed to enjoy myself.
Finally, just after Christmas last year, I decided that something had to be done. I was at my fattest ever after all those big meals and desserts.
I met Dr. Wallace and she was great. She told me I had to stop eating fast food. It was very hard for me because I was eating them three or four times a week: pizza, hamburgers, whatever I could get. But I made a promise to myself at the start that I would try my best to do it—and I did. I even cut down the booze—something I thought I could never do because I used to have two glasses of wine with dinner.
My best friend, Rachel Waterman, said I had to walk 10,000 steps every day. That, too, was very hard for me at the start. I was used to driving everywhere, including the supermarket, which was about three hundred metres from my house!
But I began to walk everywhere instead. I walked in the morning before work, and after work my husband and I took a walk in the park together. Now I never go to bed until I’ve done my 10,000 steps. Last month, my husband bought me an iPod, which keeps me going.
Losing the weight is wonderful—I feel like a different person now, and can finally buy what I want in the shops. I am so proud of myself because everyone thought I wouldn’t be able to do it—including myself.
I love my new body, and I’ll never let myself go back into my old ways.

She lost all her vision in one eye by the time she turned 5, so now the teen uses her gift “as away to—not escape, but to help me through.” Not only did her passion get her through some difficult times, but when she was 14 it also brought her to the “Britain’s Got Talent” stage, where she impressed everyone with her performance.
Sirine has a rare condition that left her completely blind by the times she was 10 years old. While her parents and doctors have tried to find treatments for her, there isn’t much they can do. So her parents focused on helping her adjust to her new life, which was when her dad said she was first introduced to music “I remember one day, we were driving in the car. When she appeared on “Britain’s Got Talent”, she told everyone just how much her passion means to her. “I guess music i s my vision,” she said. “That’s just what I live by, and music is my thing.” Then she headed over to the piano, where she played the piano and sang beautifully enough to bring the audience to tears! Unsurprisingly to everyone but Sirine, all four judges voted her into the next round of the competition!
Afterward, she said, “I can’t even say it’s a dream come true, because I didn’t even dream of it at any point... I never thought that would be realistic in my life.”

So it is no surprise that Abigail Wilson, 15, from Connecticut, USA, recently made history when she became the youngest black girl ever accepted into an American university! “I’m proud of myself for getting in, but I usually find it hard to get excited. It’s pretty cool, I guess,” said Abigail.
Her mother, Nancy, said that Abigail was a quiet baby, born two weeks late on Christmas Day. She didn’t speak her first words until she was 22 months old! Nancy and her husband thought something must be wrong, but when she started to talk, her speech was perfect. She already knew her colours, letters and was able to read. Her parents read her normal bedtime stories and they didn’t know she was learning all of it.
Abigail has always been the youngest person in her class. At six she was in the fourth grade, at ten she took her first high school class in Maths. She has studied several languages, including Spanish, French, Chinese, Russian, Arabic and German.
Abigail says that she doesn’t usually plan when she studies, she calls herself scatterbrained(注意力不集中的)and she always delays(拖延)things up to the last minute. This gives her the motivation to really do something.
In her free time, Abigail plays basketball, surfs the Internet, reads, cooks and hangs out with her friends: they are all 17 and 18.She has also studied music. Her mother says that Abigail’s music lessons helped her to be a normal teen. She believes that Abigail needed to be in a situation where she had to fail in order to learn. “She found playing the piano very difficult, but it made her learn better,” said Nancy. “She can’t always be successful, she won’t be able to learn anything! People always learn more from their failures than from their successes”.
