When Dr. Henderson was assigning (指定) project partner for his psychology (心理学) class, I secretly hoped that he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn’t assign me to work with the fiercely competitive and extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate (命运) would have it, Dr. Henderson very designedly matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.
I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren’t there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn’t mean or rude but he just gave me the impression that he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.
Needless to say, I didn’t look forward to being looked down upon so I tried to make the best of it and didn’t say anything for fear that I would make things worse.
The project required each team to develop a hypothesis (假说), set up an experiment to test the hypothesis, analyze the data and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both students.
When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had been known for single-mindedness and good grades — the exact opposite of me. I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out (临阵脱逃) . I decided to stick to it no matter what.
After long discussions we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being (健康) of teenagers. I wasn’t sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.

Liu Ming: Hi,Susan! Hi, Olivia! I have been thinking a lot recently about university. Have you guys made any plans yet?
Susan: Hi, Liu Ming! I guess I’ve thought about it, but I haven’t made any firm plans yet. How about you, Olivia?
Olivia: The same. My parents said that my future career might depend on what university I end up getting into.
Liu Ming: If I had a chance, I’d love to go to a top Chinese university. But it’s so hard. I need a really high score to pass the National College Entrance Exam.
Susan: Oh, in the UK, we don’t have a university entrance exam. We take a separate exam for each subject that we study. Then we use our grades to apply to a university. We also have to give a long essay to the university saying why we want to study our chosen subject.
Olivia: Well, in the US, we need to get really high grades and we need to take a college entrance exam. Plus we have to write an admission essay.
Liu Ming: So, we must all study extra hard, then. I really want to major in computer game design. I'd like to design fun games for children to learn with.
Susan: That’s a great idea! I’d like to study international business. According to the school’s careers advisor, it could help me find work overseas. It would be great to see more of the world!
Olivia: Hmm ... I’m not sure what I want to study as my major yet. But right now I’m thinking about robotics. I’m really interested in futuristic things.
Liu Ming: How about cybersecurity or data science? I read that they’re really fascinating subjects you’re good at computer programming. But I’m hopeless at programming!
Susan: That’s a good point. I was told that there’s no point choosing a subject that you like you’re not very good at.
Olivia: Yes, and don’t forget that where you study is also important, too. I’m planning on taking few campus tours to see what the atmosphere and facilities are like.
Liu Ming: Good idea! I really hope that we can all find good universities.
Susan: Me, too. I hope we are all lucky and find great universities.
Olivia: Luck? Ha-ha! I think we all need to start studying even harder, too!

As a senior student in high school, I committed myself to active preparation for the upcoming college entrance examination. My days were filled with studying textbooks, practicing exam questions, and making constant revisions. It felt like I was going through the motions, with the weight of pressure and expectations weighing heavily on me. The atmosphere in our class was charged with anxiety. Classmates gathered to. discuss study strategies and shared last-minute tips. Teachers provided additional classes and mock exams (模拟考试) to copy real exam conditions. Everyone desired to achieve their best in the exams to boost their confidence.
Last Thursday, a surprise exam was given to us. We were to complete all the four tests in a single day, Chinese, Maths, English and the Sciences. We had been kept completely in the dark about the exam until the very last minute. Many classmates felt upset at taking it at such short notice. As a veteran (I am repeating the last year of high school), I was used to such a surprise as our dear teachers had in store for us. It was no secret that many other schools had already done the tests. Therefore, it would be a piece of cake to get the answers online.
This term I am paired with Peter by our class director in a tutor-pupil relationship. I am the tutor (老师) ; Peter my pupil. We are supposed to help each other. Since I am more experienced, I am expected to offer tips and tricks to Peter on studies and life.
When word came that the surprise exam was in place, Peter intended to cheat. He complained to me that he would be too worn out to complete all the four tests in such a short time. He added “The exam is not that vital. Many schoolmates have got the keys anyway.”
Hearing Peter s complaint, I got extremely angry.
