When I read a post about taking someone to the movies, I was reminded of something that happened a couple of years ago.
I used to drink Cokes and they had a promotion (促销) where there was a code (编码) inside the bottle cap. You went to a website and entered the code and maybe you won something. I won some free Cokes. But then I won the grand prize! I was surprised and pleased.
The grand prize was free movies for a year. They pointed out that one movie a week was that free movies for a year meant. All of the tickets had a deadline (截止日期) later than a year from the day I received them. So I must use them in the following year. I used quite a few by taking friends to movies we all wanted to see.
But the best thing I did with them was that I donated 22 tickets (all I had left by that time) to the local Women's Transition House, a place where women and their children could go when avoiding a bad situation in general and get help to make a new start.
My workplace team had decided to help people in need, so we collected donations for that particular New Year’s Day. I knew that the Women’s Transition House provided some childcare for the women so they could go for job interviews and things like that.
I put those tickets in a box and wrote a note on the outside, asking the Women’s Transition House staff to give movie tickets to women there over the holidays to have something fun to do, with or without their children. It made me really happy to do this.

Everyone knows that early to bed and early to rise is good for health.
Shift your bedtime.
Relax before bed.
Don’t watch TV or fiddle around (摆弄) with laptops right before you go to bed because they are shining light into your eyes and maybe even tricking your brain into thinking that it’s earlier than it really is.
The secret to becoming a morning person is exposure to bright light. That’s because light suppresses (抑制) melatonin, a hormone (激素) that plays an important role in circadian (昼夜) rhythm. Natural light is the best, so get outside or open your bedroom window.
Make mornings more pleasant.
Try to schedule something to look forward to in the morning so that getting up feels like less hard. Perhaps a hot cup of coffee, sipped in silence, and the daily crossword puzzle.
A.Lighten up. |
B.Work up a sweat. |
C.It’s important to make sure you’re getting enough sleep. |
D.But many people have great difficulty in getting up early. |
E.It’s hard to stop surfing the internet late at night if you’re a night owl. |
F.Make sure the light around you is not too bright when it’s close to your bedtime. |
G.Knowing that something pleasant awaits can help you take that first painful step out of bed. |

However, our world has changed and now I must give careful consideration to this journey, as my age and health condition put me into the “vulnerable” category. There are decisions that I need to make. Is this a package that must go out now? Which of the post offices is closest to me? Before I set out from my home, I need to make two decisions!
On the drive over, I determined that I should wait for someone to come out and ask them to take my package in. One more decision was made. Then I realized that I would be making contact with a perfect stranger, and what is the difference between talking to that stranger and just going in and talking to the clerk? Another decision was made and then I walked inside and waited for my turn.
Shortly, I was called to the window, where the postal clerk was aware of the fear in my eyes. She quietly stepped back from her station and signaled me to come forward. I stepped up to the counter and placed my package on the scale. She then signaled me to step back. I moved away and she began the process of weighing it and determining the proper postage. She told me the price and signaled me forward as she took a step back. Again, I believed she saw the terror in my eyes and said, “One moment, Ma’am. ” She leaned under the counter and picked up a wipe. She thoroughly cleaned the credit card machine and the entire counter around it. She then stepped back and again signaled me forward. As I inserted my card, my tears started to roll down. I was so moved by the care with which she accomplished this usually very simple task. When I had completed the transaction(交易), she again signaled me back as she stepped forward. She took the receipt, wiped it down, and lay it on the counter. Beside it, she placed a clean tissue as she could see my tears were still streaming down my cheeks. She again stepped away from the counter. I picked up the receipt and took a step back.
In gratitude, I bowed to her. She bowed to me with equal respect.

However, his hunt was going poorly that days, and he couldn’t seem to find anything worthy of firing his gun. His followers, trying to help him, caught a Louisiana black baby bear for the President to shoot, but he refused. The thought of shooting a bear that was tied to a tree did not seem sporting, so he spared the life of the baby bear and set it free.
A famous political cartoonist for the Washington Star, Mr. Clifford Berryman, drew a cartoon titled, Drawing the Line in Mississippi, which used the story of the President refusing to shoot the bear.
The cartoon in the Washington Star showed Teddy Roosevelt, gun in hand, with his back turned on a pretty baby bear. Morris Michtom, owner of a Brooklyn toy store, got the idea from the cartoon and make a toy bear. Planning to use it only as a display, he placed the bear in his toy store window, and next to it placed a copy of the cartoon from the newspaper. To Michtom's surprise, he was surrounded by customers eager to buy it. He asked for and received President Roosevelt's permission to use his name for the bears that he and his wife made, and the Teddy Bear was born! Michtom soon made Teddy bears by the thousands. The time I’ve spent here has flown by so quickly. It seems as if I came here a month ago, but in reality I have to go home soon. When I came here, I missed my family and friends and found it hard to overcome loneliness, but on the other hand, I was interested in the new environment and had a lot of fun.
I had visited Japan three times before coming to study at this university, but when I started living in Japan, many days were filled with a mixture of anxiety and excitement. I sometimes made silly mistakes, but I thought this was the best way to learn about Japanese culture. I was not the only one that was not accustomed to the different customs of Japanese people.
My plan before coming to Japan was to make friends with some Japanese students in universities. However, I found my best friends were those who came from other countries. I didn’t know much about other countries but I came to be more interested in them through making friends from different places, which made me aware of many differences and sometimes hard-to-understand customs. She was medically retired from her job as a police officer and diagnosed with post-traumatic (创伤后) stress disorder, postnatal depression and anxiety.
It took several years for Gill to find her feet, thanks in large part to exercise and an optimistic outlook. In 2015 she joined a cycling club and has since done a triathlon (三项全能运动), half ironman, scuba diving, sky diving and more. She has also setup a positivity blog and website called Stoma Chameleon which aims to inspire people who have experienced birth trauma or have a stoma.
“When I had my traumatic birth, there was nothing positive out there about how people can recover from something like that,” she explained before taking her latest swim in the lake at Chillingham Castle. “I wanted to show them what is possible and that they’re capable of more than they think.” Her challenge, which involved swimming in the sea at Boulmer or local rivers and lakes, aimed to raise money for the Birth Trauma Association.
“I am getting my bag out and my bikini on to raise awareness of birth injures and stomas,” said Gill. “I didn’t get my bag out in public until June 2020, and now I am putting up a sign on the beach telling my story to strangers, while walking energetically and excitedly in the icy sea.”
