Chemical farming is the most widespread way of farming. It is the conventional way in which large agricultural societies grow crops.     1     Organic farming, however, even though it may mean a greater cost of production and more work, has significant benefits on our health and the health of our planet.

Chemical farming has a negative impact on the environment. Pesticides are used to protect plants from various pests, diseases, and weeds.     2     Besides killing insects and weeds, pesticides can be poisonous to a great number of other organisms such as birds, fish, beneficial insects, and non-target plants. Another important issue is that the poisonous substances become airborne. They can drift away on distances up to a few miles, poisoning the air of nearby communities.

3     Studies have shown that pesticide remains can be found in a variety of products, such as water, wine, vegetables, fruit juices, or grains. When we eat or drink these products, our health is likely to be harmed.

Organic farming relies on natural processes, biodiversity, and man-made fertilizer rather than the use of chemicals. In opposition to the negative effects that conventional farming has on the environment and human health, organic farming is an agricultural production system that does good to the health of soils, ecosystems, and people.     4     Organically grown food is higher in nutrients and free of poisonous remains.

For the benefit of our health and our planet, we have to change our ways of farming.     5    However, it is a better choice to build a better, healthier future for both our human communities and our environment.

A.Chemical farming does damage to our health in many ways.
B.The shift from chemical farming to organic farming may take time.
C.Organic farming has great potentials in agricultural in future farming.
D.However, pesticides can also pollute the soil, water, or other vegetation.
E.It has been practiced in many agricultural countries for many many years.
F.It may be the cheapest and easiest option but it surely isn’t the best choice.
G.It produces no environmental pollution and offers various benefits to health.

1】Feeling overwhelmed by your to-do list can certainly make you unhappy, but new research suggests that more free time might not be the magic medicine many of us dream it could be.

In a new study, researchers found that people with more free time generally had higher levels of subjective well-being, but only up to a point.

People who had up to two hours of free time a day generally reported they felt better than those who’d had less time. But people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally said they felt worse. So ultimately the free-time “sweet spot” might be two to three hours per day, the findings suggest.

Part of finding the “sweet spot” has to do with how people spend the extra time they have. The researchers conducted several smaller online experiments. In one they asked participants to imagine having 3½ to seven free hours per day. They were asked to imagine spending that time doing “productive” things (like exercising) or to imagine doing “unproductive” activities (like watching TV). Study participants believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day, but only if they used it unproductively. In other words, how people use their free time matters.

Of course, what feels “productive” is up to you. If watching two hours of Real Housewives in your free time increases your happiness, you should do that. And even more traditionally productive or purposeful activities can be easy and fun. Engaging in a bit of low-key cardio, like walking, can help burn stress. Free-time activities like reading, cooking or gaming are also known to put people in a state of flow.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了咖啡的相关历史以及两种重要的咖啡品种。

【推荐2】Coffee grown worldwide can date back to the ancient forests of Ethiopia. There, legend says the goat herder Kaldi first discovered coffee bean after he noticed that after eating the fruits from a certain tree, his goats became so energetic that they did not want to sleep at night. Coffee trade began on the Arabian Peninsula. By the 16th century it was known in Persia, Egypt, Syria, and Turkey.

Coffee was hardly known in Europe before the 17th century. The Venetians were the first people to bring coffee into Europe. The first European coffee houses started opening in Italy around 1645. In the following 100 years, at least 3000 coffee houses were operating in England. It was the coffee houses of England that started the custom of tipping waiters and waitresses. In a short time, coffee and coffee houses spread throughout Europe. In 1822, a Frenchman Louis Bernard Rabaut invented a machine which forced the hot water through the coffee grounds using steam instead of merely letting it drip through. The first espresso machine (咖啡机) had been born.

In the coffee industry, there are two important coffee species — Arabica and Robusta. Arabica originates from the coffee trees discovered in Ethiopia. It represents about 70% of the world’s coffee production. Arabica coffees bring the highest prices on the world market. Meanwhile, these coffee trees require additional care and attention. Robusta is primarily used for instant coffees. The Robusta bean itself tends to be slightly rounder and smaller than an Arabica bean. It can produce a coffee which has a distinctive taste and about 50-60% more caffeine. The Robusta tree is more resistant to disease, which makes it easier and cheaper to grow.

To preserve coffee beans’ fresh roasted flavor as long as possible, you can store them in an air-tight container (容器) at room temperature. Coffee beans can be beautiful, but avoid clear containers which will allow light to influence thee taste of your coffee. Exposure to air is bad for your beans. If you do freeze your beans, be sure to use a truly air-tight container.

B.Arabica contains more caffeine.
C.Arabica beans appear smaller and rounder in size.
D.Arabica accounts for most of the world’s instant coffees.
4. What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?
A.Ways to store coffee beans.B.The process of making coffee.
C.The methods of choosing coffee beans.D.The difficulty of adjusting the taste of coffee.

3】Climate change is causing more areas to turn into deserts. This issue is affecting the lives of 250 million people as land that used to be good for farming becomes dry and unproductive. Around one-third of the world’s land is impacted, including regions in Africa, southern Europe, Asia and America.

Sand to Green is a Moroccan company that can transform a patch of desert into a sustainable (可持续的) and profitable plantation in five years, according to Wissal Ben Moussa, its co-founder and chief agricultural officer. The solution is using agroforestry (农林业)to create a new kind of agriculture that is sustainable and that can be resilient (有适应力的) in front of climate change.

The system can be set up close to any source of salty water, which Sand to Green cleans using energy from the sun. It then grows different types of fruit trees and plants together in the same area—a method called mixed planting—and waters the plants’ roots directly with the cleaned water, to reduce water loss to the air. The soil is regenerated using what Sand to Green calls “green manure”, a mixture that includes compost, biochar(生物炭)and microorganisms that help the soil “wake up”. Biochar is a form of charcoal that can help dry soil hold on to water.

In a five-hectare trial in southern Morocco that’s been running since 2017, Sand to Green has tried out a variety of plants in search of the best performers. Among the intercropping herbs (草本植物) that have been successfully trialed are rosemary, geranium, vetiver and citronella, which Ben Moussa describes as “very low-maintenance and very high-profit”.

Sand to Green is now working to scale up to a 20-hectare commercial site, also in southern Morocco. It says a site of that size would cost around $475,000 to set up and would start bringing financial returns in about five years.

According to Ben Moussa, with this system they create biodiversity, which means better soil, healthier crops and a bigger yield. The plantation can generate 1.5 times more yield, thus making more money than a farm that grows only one type of crop in the same space.

1. What phenomenon does the author describe in paragraph 1?

2. Why did Sand to Green use agroforestry?
A.To preserve the crop’s survival rate.
B.To protect water from pollution.
C.To make a new type of soil.
D.To help people adapt to climate change.
3. What can we learn about Sand to Green?
A.It aims to plant more trees.
B.It earns a good reputation.
C.It develops new plants.
D.It produces good results.
4. What does the underlined phrase “scale up” mean in paragraph 5?
A.Expand.B.Object.C.Refer.D.Prefer.
