We had several monkeys on board, but Jack was the prince of them all. As he grew tame, he got more liberty, till he got the whole range of the ship, except the captain’s and the passengers’ cabins. I     1    (awaken) at an early hour by the quick steps of feet. It was Jack chasing around. He would seize the hats     2     the sailors’ heads, and threw it to the sea. He would steal their knives and other tools, which,     3     not very actively pursued, he would sometimes throw overboard. When breakfast was preparing, Jack used to sit in a corner, and when the cook’s back was turned, take something from the fire.

He sometimes burned his fingers by these tricks, and this kept him quiet for a few days. But no sooner had the pain been gone, to no one’s surprise,    4     the same thing was done again. Two days in each week, the pigs, which formed part of our livestock,     5     (allow) to run about for exercise; and then Jack was as happy as the day was long.    6     (hide) himself behind a bucket, he would suddenly spring upon the back of one of them, which then ran around in a fright.

Besides Jack, we had on board three little monkeys with red skins and blue faces. Once, Jack attracted     7     (small) one to him. Then, seizing him with one hand, with the other he took the brush and covered him with white paint from head to foot! As soon as Jack saw that he was discovered, he dropped his wet-through brother, and ran up to the main-top,     8     he stood looking at what was going on below with his nose between the bars.

Jack was afraid to come down, and only after three days passed     9     hunger force him to come down. He chose the moment when I was sitting on deck, he dropped suddenly into my feet, looking so piteously (可怜地) at me for pardon, that I not only forgive him     10    , but saved him from further punishment. Soon after this, I took another ship, and Jack and I parted, never to meet again.

The aim of program is     1    offer) “forest healing”; the firefighters all have certain types of stress disorder. Saneum is one of three official healing forest in South Korea, which offer a range of programs from meditation to woodcraft to camping. Soon there will be 34 more. South Koreans, many of whom suffer from work stress, digital addiction, and intense academic pressures,    2    (welcome) the medicalization of nature with great enthusiasm. In fact, the government is investing a hundred million dollars     3     a healing complex next to Sobaeksan National park.

There is increasing evidence     4     being outside in a pleasant natural environment is good for us. But what is frustrating is that fewer of us actually enjoy nature regularly. According to Lisa Nisbet, a psychology professor at Canada’s Trent University, evidence for the benefits of nature is pouring at a time    5     we are most disconnected from it. The pressures of modern life lead to long hours spent working indoors. Digital addiction and strong academic pressure add to the problem. In America, visits to parks have been declining since the dawn of email, and so    6     visits to the backyard. Research indicates that only about 10 percent of American teens spend time outside every day.

So what are some of the benefits of nature that Nisbet refers to?    7     (surround) by nature has one obvious effect: the more time we spend in nature, the     8     (stressful) we become. This has been shown to lower blood pressure, heart rates, and levels of the stress hormone, as well as reduce feelings of fear or anger. But studies also indicate that spending time in nature can do more than provide an     9     (improve) sense and well-being; it can lower rates of heart disease and diabetes. That is probably     10     we evolved in nature and have been adapted to the natural environment.

The sun’s changing energy levels are not to blame for recent global warming and, if anything, solar variations over the past 20 years should have had a cooling effect, scientists have said.

Their findings add to a growing body of evidence       1     human activity, not natural causes, lies behind the rising average world temperatures, which     2     (expect) to reach their second highest level this year since records began in the 1860s.

There is little doubt that solar variability has influenced the Earth’s climate in the past and     3     well have been a factor in the first half of the last century, but British and Swiss researchers said     4     could not explain recent warming. Over the past 20 years, all the trends in the sun that could have had an influence on Earth's climate     5     (be) in the opposite direction to that required to explain the observed rise in global mean temperatures.

Most scientists say emissions of greenhouse gases, mainly from burning fossil (化石的) fuels in power plants, factories and cars, are the prime cause of the current warming trend. A     6     (decrease) group pins the blame on natural variations in the climate system, or a gradual rise in the sun’s energy output.

They concluded that     7     rapid rise in global mean temperatures seen since the late 1980s could not be attributed to solar variability,     8     mechanism was used.

The     9     (warm) years in the past 150 years have all been since 1990 and a United Nations climate panel,     10     (draw) on the work of 2,500 scientists, said this year it was “very likely” that human activities were the main cause.
