Why can’t penguins fly?

Even the very smallest penguin, the fairy penguin, weighs 1 kg,which is about as much as a herring gull (银鸥). But herring gulls have a 1.4-meterwingspan,compared with just 32 centimeters for the fairy penguin. Water is 784 times denser (密度较大的) than air,and around 62 million years ago, penguins began making adaptations for swimming underwater. Their bones are filled with heavy bone marrow (骨髓)rather than air and they have much larger stomachs for making long fishing trips away from the nest.

How do squirrels find buried nuts?

It was once thought that they just used their noses to sniff out buried nuts and that the majority were never actually located. But a study at Princeton University showed that squirrels actually have a good memory and can build a map of the route from one hidden nut to the next.

Why don’t horses have toes?

Early horses such as Hyracotherium, which lived 55 million years ago, did have toes, but they were much smaller animals. For taller animals, extra weight at the end of their legs has a much bigger influence on their speed. A recent study at Harvard University, the USA, found that one broad hoof (蹄) is almost as strong as many smaller toes, but much lighter.

Do animals have blood types?

Yes, they do! As long as the animals in question have blood (not all do)then they will have species-specific “blood groups”. As with humans, these groups are determined by the structure of the blood based on the presence or absence of antibodies along with the make-up of the proteins that sit on the outside of red blood cells.

Humans are usually one of four main blood types. Thirteen types have been identified for dogs, eight for horses and three for cats.

【推荐1】For years, animals have been used in the testing of medicine to make sure the products are safe to use for humans. A law that doesn’t require labs to test on animals any more has been signed recently. Before the new law was in place, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required new medicine to be tested on animals before the labs could move on to test on humans. Companies were required to test their products on animals like a monkey or dog. This causes companies to test on tens of thousands of animals every yar. Now the new law lifts the requirement for animal testing.

According to Science, researchers have been wanting to move away from animal testing. Paul Locke, scientist and lawyer at Johns Hopkins University, told the website: “We have many important drugs that have been developed using animal tests. But as we get into some of these more difficult diseases, especially neurological (神经系统的) diseases, the animal models just aren’t serving us as well.”

The chief scientist of the FDA says that they want to try and get rid of (摆脱) all animal testing. “We support other methods that are backed by science and provide the necessary data showing whether products are safe and effective,” Namandjé Bumpus told Science. One of their choices is called “organs-on-chips (器官芯片)”. These are small chips that contain human cells (细胞). The chips are used to test the effects of medicine. They mimic certain human body functions. For example, they are very soft, there can be some kind of blood flow and they are physically active, just as our bodies.

Aysha Akhtar, a neurologist and president and CEO of the Center for Modern Sciences said: “The decision is still up to the FDA to decide whether the method is to be put into practice.” Anyway, Akhtar expects that new methods of testing will be used.

【推荐2】Wild mangoes come from the foothills of the Himalayas. They are by far the most important fruit in India, and have been cultivated there for four thousand years. The arrival of the mango tree in other parts of the world was probably due to the Portuguese who carried mangoes via Goa to Africa, from where they eventually reached the New World. Mango trees are now so well established in many tropical countries that it might appear that they have always been there.

Like many tropical trees, the mango tree is multi-purpose product. Its wood is used in boat building, and its leaves can be fed to cattle. Most of the mango crop is consumed in the areas where it is grown, but in recent years mangoes have gained in popularity across the world as people in mild climate become increasingly eager to enjoy the delight of the fresh fruit.

The global market for mangoes is very profitable, and mango producers are keen to make use of the fruit's growing popularity. Modern shoppers not only appreciate the fruit's high nutritional value(the mango is a good source of vitamin A and C, protein and fibre), but also expect it to look and taste perfect. Therefore producers now select only the best quality seedlings which have the most chance of developing into good quality fruit.

Mangoes are high in fiber, thus making them very good for the heart. The high fiber content is also helps easing constipation. They have high pectin(果胶) and vitamin C content that reduces the blood cholesterol levels and serves as an immune booster. This fruit is rich in anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals and contain an enzyme() that has stomach soothing properties. These enzymes act as a digestive aid and digestive proteins.

Although the mango tree has spread from its native Himalayan foothills to the tropics, delivering the fresh fruit to the world's supermarkets presents a challenge, as it does not travel well. Producers transport the fruit by speedy but costly air freight (货运)for minimum delay rather than risk the cheaper but slower road or shipping routes which, can result in damage to the fruit.

Mangoes are usually in storage for some time after their arrival at their destination. The fruit must be kept cold, or the sweet, juicy flesh will soon become over ripe and the mangoes will be unfit for sale. Fortunately, extremely effective refrigeration is now available and this is the best way of preventing the fruit from going bad before it reaches the supermarket shelves.

Calorie-controlled food

Using special calorie-controlled foods from the vet is usually the most effective way of losing weight and well worth considering.     2     . Many vets run weight control clinics providing regular check-ups. They are often free of charge, and help to ensure that the diet is working at the correct rate.

Weight watcher

With calorie-controlled food from the vet, you will be advised how much to feed daily. Many dry diets come with calibrated scoops (带刻度的勺子) but it is easy to overfill these.
