Reading is essential but how can one choose the right books to read and where can one find them? A few famous people may give you some helpful tips.

● Read books from past eras.

1     Otherwise, you’d be “completely dependent on the prejudices and fashions of your times,” just as Albert Einstein put it. “Somebody who reads only newspapers and books of contemporary authors looks to me like an extremely near-sighted person who dislikes eyeglasses,” he said.

    2

Reading too wide a variety in too short a time would keep the teachings from leaving a lasting impression on you. Seneca the Younger, a first-century Roman philosopher, suggested that “you must linger (流连) among a limited number of master thinkers, and digest their works, if you would obtain ideas which shall win firm hold in your mind.”

● Shop at secondhand bookstores.

Virginia Woolf believed the works in secondhand bookstores have an attraction which the usual volumes of the library lack. Browsing through these books gives you the chance to run into something that wouldn’t have risen to the attention of librarians and booksellers.     3

● Check out authors’ reading lists.

In his 1940 guide How to Read a Book, American philosopher Mortimer J. Adler talked about how to choose books. He attached importance to those that other authors consider worth reading.     4     Mortimer wrote that “one way to understand them is to read the books they read.”

● Make the final decision by yourself.

5     It’s you yourself who should choose what, how and when to read. Theodore Roosevelt recommended choosing books on subjects that interest you and letting your mood guide you to your next great read.

A.Interest is the best teacher.
B.Great authors are great readers.
C.Leave some room for older works.
D.Learn more about those great authors.
E.Don’t jump too quickly from book to book.
F.There’s no “best books” list that everyone should follow.
G.Usually they are much more selective in organizing their collections.

【推荐2】You may consider your smartphone’s camera as a substitute when you don’t have your “real” camera with you, but the fact is, smartphone camera technology has become so complex that the pictures you take on your mobile device may be matchable to those you shoot with a standalone digital camera. Plus, your smartphone camera travels with you almost everywhere. What better way to capture (捕捉) the unexpected moments of your life that could be the ones you love best?

Try these simple and affordable tips to control and use the power of your smartphone’s camera, and capture a quality image for every moment you want to preserve.

Smartphone cameras enable you to snap (拍照) an image at a moment’s notice, but the slim design of mobile devices can make it tough to hold the camera steady enough to capture a clear image. Many of us take less time to get the shot with smartphones than with fancier cameras, and this can lead to out-of-focus images we’re unhappy with. Simply taking a few moments to stop and hold the camera—and ourselves—still can make a big difference. Using the volume (音量) button on the side of your smartphone to snap images instead of the camera’s on-screen button can also reduce hand movement and improve the quality of your shots.

Your smartphone’s camera can measure light automatically, but most smartphone camera lenses (镜片) limit your focal length and depth. With quality lighting, your camera is able to capture quality images. Whether you’re snapping pictures indoors or outside, pay attention to light sources and how they hit your photo’s subject. Be especially mindful of dark shadows across people’s faces, which can appear less attractive in pictures. Additionally, a flashlight from a different phone can light your subject from an angle which will result in a better image than relying on your smartphone camera’s flash. Instead of getting a flat, washed-out look, the subject looks dynamic and attractive.

Just as your smartphone doesn’t always know what you most want to capture in an image, the strongest composition often comes from simplicity. Before you snap, take a look at the background “noise” your image will include, such as passersby, pictures on a wall behind the subject and moving cars. Don’t try to capture too much all in one photo. Walk closer to help remove objects that don’t add to the scene. Choosing contrasting colours between your subject and the background elements in an image can increase the wow factor of your smartphone pictures, too.

【推荐3】Fear of public speaking is one of the most commonly-held fears, and when the speaking event takes the form of a debate it adds a “winner and a “loser" to the discourse.     1     They are applicable whether you're debating in a courtroom or a living room.

Know the rules.

You should not only have a well-reasoned argument ready for your debate, but you should know the format the debate will take. If it's a business meeting, will you be speaking in front of the whole company or just your office?     2     Know as much as you can about the structure the debate will take, as well as what is expected of you as a participant.

    3

You know the point you want to make. Don't be off the point. Have a clear agenda in mind going into your debate, and stick to it. If you stray too far from your original point, you will weaken your argument.

Keep within time limits.

Some debates are more rigidly structured than others. Even if you're not participating in a formal debating event that requires you to stay within a set time limit, don't talk aimlessly.     4

Respect your opponent.

Even in an informal conversation it's important to let your “adversary(对手)” have his say, and let him know he's been heard “Focus on debating content, not character”.     5

A.Stick to the topic.
B.What are the time limits?
C.Be concise and avoid too much repetition.
D.You are free to express yourself in the debate.
E.A debate is a contest, or, perhaps, like a game, where speakers present their arguments.
F.There are some applicable tips that can make the debate more productive than painful.
G.You may be challenging a person's point of view, but you're not challenging the individual.
