Teamwork Doubles the Strength

Teamwork is really important for any class or team to achieve its goals and objectives. Let me give you three reasons why teamwork is advantageous.

As individuals, we possess diverse talents, strengths, weaknesses and experiences. A team is like a blanket that weaves what each of us possesses, resulting in an end product that is diverse yet similar. As team members exchange thoughts and experiences, there can be more efficiency and effectiveness at problem-solving. This pooling of talents can also lead to greater innovation and success.

Take Leicester City, for example. It won the Premier League in 2016, to the disbelief of many soccer fans. Leicester City, previously regarded as the underdog in the League, displayed surprisingly impressive teamwork that led to its unbelievable victory in soccer history.

Next, teamwork helps to increase efficiency and productivity as members share the workload. It reduces the stress on each of us and ensures the completion of tasks within the regulated time frame. When work is distributed and each of us in a team specializes in specific tasks, we can expect greater job satisfaction.

And finally, working in a team multiplies learning opportunities. Team members learn from more experienced members who may offer deeper insights and perspectives. Newer members may also contribute new and brave ideas. Besides encouraging the sharing of knowledge and experiences, teamwork also develops soft skills like communication and interpersonal skills. We learn to respect differences in working styles and opinions, and develop trust when working with others.

Some may think that working in isolation is more efficient since more time is taken when cooperating with others. For more talented individuals, working alone means being the star of a project — there’s no need to share the success or glory with others. But, the loss of cooperativity that only team effort can generate may also prevent the team from reaching its fullest potential.

Adventure Therapy

Adventure treatment is an experiential type of treatment and adopts adventure activities, tailored physical, psychological and social challenges, for therapy.

Adventure treatment is mainly for young people with a known dysfunction(功能障碍), disorder or disconnection. A tailored program will be offered to help them. Beyond treatment, it also has other purposes. One is for prevention. It is designed to keep people healthy, well and connected. For example, a community recreation program uses tailored adventure activities to help individuals who want to improve their health and well-being. Another is for early intervention. It is intervening early before the onset of a dysfunction, diagnosed difficulty, disorder or disconnection, for example with young people at risk of dropping out school. The last is for continuing care. It is designed to help people maintain their health and well-being.

The adventure treatment programs can be practiced in big cities, rural towns or remote villages. Indoor places with rope courses, urban parks or remoted wild spaces can be included. All depends on different intended target groups and program aims. For example, a program for socially isolated young people in the central desert of Australia will be likely different from one for mental health people within a medical institution in the USA. The former will likely emphasize cultural elements, unstructured time and use of open natural spaces, while the latter may emphasize clinical therapeutic input, structured interventions, and use of contrived adventure environments. Similarly, for customers to gain ground towards psychological wellness objectives, the advisor will choose comprehensive exercises.

Nowadays, adventure treatment is in an experimental stage, but many studies have noted that adventure therapy can profit young people a lot. It is also valuable for showing grown-ups positive methods for dealing with stress for pressure.

The largest land animal remaining on the earth, the African elephant is of much importance to African ecosystem. Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a giant plant-eater, it significantly shapes the forest-and-savanna (大草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore deciding the conditions of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat.

It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it both a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbush, as well as pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in not only deep tropical forests but also the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth, which attract a variety of other plant-eaters.

Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants create open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forest becomes suitable for large-hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small-sized plant-eaters to obtain their food as well.

Scientists are worried now that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant dies out, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.

US psychotherapist(精神治疗师) Virginia Satir (1916-1988) once said: “We need four hugs a day survival. We need eight hugs a day maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” She believed that hugging was necessary and important. Researchers have found scientific evidence that backs up her beliefs. According to a recent study published in the journal Psychological Science, receiving a hug can reduce stress and help protect us from illness.

In the study, researchers from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the US invited 404 healthy adults to participate in interviews about how often the experienced conflicts in their daily lives, as well as how many hugs they received within a period of two weeks. These participants were intentionally exposed to cold viruses during the interview.

According to the research, people who received hugs on the same days when they experienced conflicts tended to report fewer negative feelings during the following days. They have also found that people who received hugs were less stressed out. The physical contact that we get through hugging especially loved ones, is a “marker of intimacy(亲密) and helps generate the feeling that others are there to help in the face of adversity(困境)”, according to Scientific American People feel more comfortable and relaxed after hugging.

The researchers have also found that the more hugs people get, the less likely they are to catch colds, Science Daily noted. When people receive hugs, they release more oxytocin(后叶催产素), which is also known as the “love hormone”. According to the researchers, this hormone can decrease one’s heart rate and lower blood pressure. This can put people into a state of emotional well-being. When people are in this state, their immune systems become stronger.

Of course, hugging is not the only way to comfort others. But physical contact like hugging can comfort people without “making any judgments (about right or wrong)”, Michael Murphy from CMU told Time.
