Known as the wife of the outstanding Professor Stephen Hawking for 30 years, Jane Hawking came to more people’s notice thanks to The Theory of Everything, a 2014 Oscar-winning film based on her book Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen.

Jane became interested in Hawking during middle school. She was impressed by his brilliant wisdom, and the two fell in love. Though he was told by the doctor to have a serious disease and only two years to live, Jane still married him in 1965.

Jane’s parents were rather surprised, but they supported her very much when she married Stephen Hawking. “And, of course, there was Stephen and his talent. Stephen had been given two years to live so I thought I could give two years of my life to this person I loved. I wanted to help him achieve his ambitions. And then, there were my tiny children. They kept me going,” Jane said.

Jane took on her role as a wife and assistant, taking her husband to conferences worldwide. As Stephen’s illness developed, Jane chose to seek her own academic career. She wanted to be in a position to provide for her family, so the first thing in the morning she took the children to kindergarten, and then hurried to the university library. She gained her PhD two days before her third child was born.

Jane became a lecturer in modern languages. And now she is retired, focusing on her creative writing. She is working on her latest novel, to follow up her second one, which was published in August, 2018.

He said that despite his having to work, his teachers and other students have been helpful. Professors have sent textbooks and invited him to their courses, and students have sent notes of encouragement. “Nobody has treated me differently. I am just another face in the class.”

Looking back over the past seven years working and studying at PKU, Liu said the experience has reaffirmed his determination to shape his future through education.

The couple were married in 1942 in Muldoon, Texas. Following their wedding ceremony at the start of World War II, Leonard enlisted in the Army Air Corps and became a B-24 bomber pilot. Then on October 27, Leonard passed away just before 1 p.m. and his wife died just 10 hours later at 11 p.m.

“Every time I began to think about it, I began to smile because of how much they loved each other. In my mind my grandfather was waiting for her in heaven with open arms,” Craig Cherry told KWTX. “Even in his ninety-fifth year, he still, when he talked about her, had a sparkle (闪烁 的光) in his eye. A memorial service for them is scheduled for this Friday and I’m sure there won’t be a dry eye in the house.”

【推荐3】The city of Richmond announced that Roscoe Burnems would become the city’s first poet laureate (桂冠诗人), a poet recognized for achievements in poetry.

During his two-year term as a poet laureate, Burnems is responsible for being a poetry advocate by providing access to poetry throughout the city and offering opportunities to use the power of words to heal wounds, open hearts and minds, and bring people closer together. He has the freedom to create and develop his own projects during his term and will receive a $4,000 annual bonus.

Burnems’ love of poetry began at a an early age when he was struggling against depression. His English teacher recommended him to read poetry, which later brought him a peaceful mental state and helped him recover from depression.
