U.S. researchers have found traces of an ancient lake on Mars recently, increasing hopes of discovering evidence     1     billions of years ago the Red planet hosted life.

“The lake appears     2     (cover) as much as 80 square miles and was up to 1,500 feet deep,” said the team from the University of Colorado.

“This is the first clear evidence of shorelines on the surface of Mars,” said Boulder’s research associate, Gaetano Di Achille, in a study published in the latest edition of Geophysical Research Letters.

“The identification of the shorelines and     3     (accompany) geological evidence allow us to calculate the size and volume of the lake, which probably     4     (date) from some 3.4 billion years ago.”

Analysis of the images has shown that the water carved out the canyon in which it was found,     5     then opened out into a valley depositing sediment(沉积物)which formed a delta. “Finding shorelines is a great discovery to us,” said assistant professor Brian Hynek, adding it showed that the lake     6     (exist) at a time when Mars was thought to have been cold and dry.

The science field believes that the oldest surfaces on Mars formed during the wet and warm era     7     (know) as the Noachan epoch, about 4.1 billion to 3.7 billion years ago.

The newly discovered lake is believed to date from the Hsperian era and postdates the end of the warm and wet period on Mars     8     300 million years, according to the study. Scientists believe deltas next to the lake     9     hold secrets about past life on Mars     10     such places on Earth have become the natural deposits of organic carbon and other markers of life.

The Impact of Visual Cues on Behavior

During the energy crisis in the 1970s, Dutch researchers began to pay close attention to the country’s energy usage. In one suburb near Amsterdam, they found that some homeowners used 30 percent less energy than their neighbors     1     the homes being of similar size and getting electricity for the same price.

It turned out that the houses in this neighborhood were nearly identical except for one feature: the location of the electrical meter. Some had one in the basement.     2     had the electrical meter upstairs in the main hallway.     3     you may guess, the homes with the meters located in the main hallway used less electricity. When their energy use was obvious and easy to track, people changed their behavior.

Every habit     4     (initiate) by a cue, and we are more likely to notice cues that stand out. Unfortunately, the environments where we live and work often make it easy not to do certain actions     5    there is no obvious cue to trigger the behavior. When the cues that spark a habit are subtle or hidden, they are easy     6     (ignore).

By comparison, creating obvious visual cues can draw your attention toward a    7     (desire) habit. I’ve experienced the power of obvious cues in my own life. I used to buy apples from the store, put them in the crisper (储藏格) in the bottom of the refrigerator, and forget all about them. By the time I remembered, the apples     8     (go) bad. I never saw them, so I never ate them.

Eventually, I took my own advice and redesigned my environment. I bought a large display bowl and placed it in the middle of the kitchen counter. The next time I bought apples, that was     9     they went. Almost like magic, I began eating a few apples each day simply because they were obvious,     10     (facilitate) the formation of a healthy eating habit rather than keeping them out of sight.

Although we can’t be sure exactly when music came into our life, scientists do know something about why we listen to music.     1     (listen) to music benefits us in many ways.

A study shows a child     2     (play) the piano has significantly increasing IQ and better academic performance.     3     (take) exercise and listening to music can go hand in hand. For example,     4     (run) to your favorite music can increase your physical performance during a tough session. If you focus on your favorite music,     5     (ignore) that you’ve just run an extra mile is common. Another finding is that music can help you remember information better. Trying     6    (memorize) English words seems easy for you while you are listening to soft music. What’s more, it is reported that over 30% of Americans suffer from sleeping problems. A study indicated that students who listened to light music for 45 minutes before     7     (go) to sleep got better sleep than students who didn’t.

If you feel upset and have trouble     8     (calm) down, listen to what you enjoy. It’ll probably help you relax. At least, it’ll put you in a better mood.
