Sharing Joy with Others

Ah Nao is a “furry” (兽迷). At Super Furry Fusion, the biggest furry party in China, Ah Nao dressed up in an animal suit, performed on stage, met friends and played games. “It was the happiest time I’ve ever had,” he told TMPost.

Furries are fans of animal characters from movies, books and video games. They enjoy wearing animal costumes and role-playing. They also draw or write furry artwork and stories. “People are like families in this community and we can really be ourselves here.” said Ah Nao.

Many young people, especially those born after the year 2000, have created all kinds of similar communities based on niche (小众的) interests. These can include hanfu, voice acting, and even pen spinning.

Hui, another young person born after 2000, is the head of a community called “Home to Pen Spinners”. In this community, people share videos of their performances and learn more difficult tricks from each other. Earlier this year, Hui led two Chinese teams to the sixth Pen Spinning World Cup. Sixteen teams from 11 countries, including the US, Japan and France, took part. The Chinese teams won sixth and seventh places.

“Young people have a strong need to build their identity (身份认同感). In these communities they can have a sense of belonging and find better ways to express themselves.” wrote Yu Tao, a PhD in cultural studies at Heilongjiang University.

“People group together based not on birthplaces, family background or any other factors, but simply on the same interests.” Yu wrote. As Chi Benben, another furry, told TMPost, “The circle welcomes everyone. Some furries feel inferior (自卑的) in day-to-day life, perhaps because they are fat or disabled in some way. But they can all make friends and have fun here.”

文章大意:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章讲述了作者小时候因为家里管束严格,而总是取悦别人,后来成婚之后一直努力逃出这个怪圈,形成自己的价值观。

【推荐1】Everyone needs to be safe, loved and to have a sense of belonging. These are inborn and natural basic needs. In an effort to have these needs satisfied, many of us tend to please others. And it works for a while. We find that we experience less conflict (冲突) with others, but the conflict within ourselves grows. Saying “ no ” produces feeling of guilt (内疚) and saying “ yes ” brings anger.

My father was in the military, so we often moved. Being shy, I didn’t make friends. What’s more, I grew up in a household where grades, image and how others saw our family were very important. In our household a “ C ” was unacceptable, a “ B ” should have been an “ A ” and an “ A ” meant the lesson was too easy. I was too thin, my sister was too fat and my brother’s lips and ears were too big for his tiny head.

To stop pleasing others is easier said than done. It’s a long process, one in which I am consistently working to perfect. The turning point for me came shortly after I got married. The very first thing that we did to end the cycle of pleasing others was developing our own identity as independent human beings and then as a couple. And then we developed a strong set of core (核心) values and a vision for our future. The third and one of the most valuable things we did during this process was developing our own personal influence on others and we valued deeply the opinions of the wiser and more successful people around us.

Besides, we should understand that sometimes helping people at once actually hurts them. The struggle is necessary to success. The struggle strengthens character, making people determined. So sometimes allowing people to struggle is the best thing you can do for them.

1. How are we likely to feel when pleasing others?

A.He grew up doing a lot of housework.B.It was hard for him to adapt to the moving life.
C.He realized the value of opinions from others.D.His parents had great expectations of the children.
3. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.What steps the author took to go on pleasing others.
B.Why the author further developed his values and character.
C.How the author stepped out of the cycle of pleasing others.
D.When the author turned to others for their valuable opinions.
4. What does the author suggest doing?

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。主要报道了维也纳致力于去解决狗主人不清理宠物的粪便的问题。

【推荐2】Vienna, the capital of Austria, is graced by its wealth of art, music, museums and parks. But some locals are saying that the city’s charm is damaged by dog owners who don’t clean up after their pets.

Last week they came up with a solution. There is a citywide campaign(运动) telling dog owners to pick up after their dogs. That means they cannot leave a mess on city streets and in parks.

“We want to reach as many dog owners as possible to remind them of the rules,” said Ulli Sima, city councillor (议员) in charge of the environment. “We want to show them the easiest solution to the problem: put it in a bag and then in the next rubbish bin,” said Sima.

There are about 158, 000 dogs in Vienna. The city requires their owners to bag the pet’s mess when walking it outdoors. But it’s believed that only a few of the city’s dog lovers actually follow the rules.

Every day dogs drop between 5 and 10 tons of their waste around the city. Vienna spends 7 million euros every year just to keep the streets mess-free.

Loose enforcement(执行) is to blame.Dog owners say they pay 40 euros each year for their pets. But the city argues the dog license fee has nothing to do with cleaning up dog messes.

The fine for leaving a dog mess is high --as much as 72 euros. The rules, however, are seldom enforced.

City officials said that the campaign was not meant to be an attack on dog owners.

“The city does a lot for peaceful co-existence by establishing areas for dogs or providing bags for dog waste. But dog owners must do their part as well and accept these offers,” said Sima.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了现在的人们很少表达感激之情的原因,以及要表达感激之情的原因,从而鼓励人们多多表达感激之情。

【推荐3】When you feel thankful for things you’ve received or something that’s happened, that’s gratitude. “Gratitude is how you relate to others, when you see yourself in connection with things larger than yourself.” says Tamiko Zablith, founder of the etiquette consulting firm Minding Manners.

Nowadays, too many people don’t stop to appreciate what they have, and much less express gratitude. Our instant-satisfaction lifestyle may be to blame. “With commercial and social media, everything is speeding the younger generation to make them feel that they’re the centre of the universe,” Zablith says. “If it’s all about them, why thank others?”

However, studies have shown that people who express gratitude increase their happiness levels, lower their blood-pressure levels, get better-quality sleep and improve their relationships. And gratitude’s positive effects are long-lasting. Canadian researchers found that people who wrote letters of thanks or performed good deeds for a mere six-week period were able to improve their mental health, decrease their bodily pain and feel more energetic for up to six months.

What about gratitude recipients who receive messages of thanks? Research has confirmed that the recipients experience positive emotions when they’re singled out. “Those are happy surprises — you may not be expecting the favour to be returned,” says Jo-Ann Tsang, associate professor of psychology at Baylor University. When someone is the recipient of unexpected kindness or gratitude, he’s more likely to return the favour or pass kindness on. One study found that when someone is thanked, it more than doubles his chances of being helpful again. Zablith likes the reaction she got when she rewarded a stranger who held the door open for her at a coffee shop with his rightful place in line in front of her. “The look on his face was shock,” says Zablith. “He would be nicer to the cashier, the next person he would see at work. There’s a trickle-down effect.”

1. What might contribute to people’s less gratitude expressing nowadays?
A.The fast-paced lifestyle.B.Having fewer things to be grateful for.
C.The immediate pleasure from social network.D.Being embarrassed about speaking out appreciation.
2. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A.Explain a reason.B.Introduce a solution.
C.Add some background information.D.Summarize the previous paragraphs.
3. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A.Sharing gratitude leads to positive emotions.
B.Kindness can be passed on if the giver feels appreciated.
C.The give-and-take of gratitude can determine relationships.
D.Gratitude recipients actually expect the favor to be returned.
4. What’s the main idea of the text?
A.How to accept gratitude from others.B.Gratitude benefits people’s well-being.
C.How to be grateful to people around you.D.Kindness shouldn’t be a one-way matter.
