We all know your student loan will only go so far. So what can you do to save those pennies (便士) and eventually a pretty substantial amount in the long run? Here is some advice from L&S Editor Marianne Lampon.

FOOD

—Buy the supermarket’s Own Brand products: When it comes to items such as cheese, milk, and more, the Own Brand products can be bought much cheaper but without lowering the quality.

—Coupons (优惠券), coupons, coupons: It’s really worth hitting the Internet for some extra coupons, especially for meals out with a big group. Keep an eye on restaurants that offer a cheaper Set Menu or that do 2 for 1 deals on main courses.

STUDENT-ONLY OFFERS

—Fresher’s Fair: Say hello to free pens, bottle openers and a bunch of things you never knew you needed. Freshers get involved!

—Student discount in stores and online: Showing your University ID card will save you at least 10% with a lot of online or offline businesses. As a result, you’ll feel slightly less guilty about buying those new pair of Nike’s.

FASHION

The shift from summer to autumn can be a sad time, but it needn’t hurt your wallet!

—Accessories (配饰): Basically, wear your summer clothes with warm and comfortable accessories. How about those shorts? Just team them with a pair of tights and you’re good to go.

—Charity shops: The perfect way to stay on-trend and at a super affordable price.

So there it is! Sticking to some of these ideas will really help save some money in the long run, proving a little really does go a long way.

【推荐1】Have you ever had the experience of talking to someone and you think they are lying? Well, you are not alone. We’ve all had that feeling. But did you know that there are several things you can look for to see if you are being lied to?

Sometimes you can tell if a person is lying by observing what they do with their body. When people are lying they tend not to move their arms, hands or legs very far form their body. They don’t want to take up very much space because they don’t want to be noticed. Sometimes a person who is lying will not look you in the eyes. Other times people who lie try to look at you in a strong way because they want to convince you they are telling the truth.

Liars also use deflection. For example, if you ask a liar the question“did you steal Fatima’s bag?”,they may answer with something like“Fatima is my friend, why would I do that?”in this situation the person is telling the truth, but they are also not answering the question. They are trying to deflect your attention. Liars may also give too many details. They may try to over-explain things. They do this because they want to convince you of what they are saying.

Often when a person is lying, they do not want to continue talking about their lie. If you think someone is lying, quickly change the subject. If the person is lying, they will appear more comfortable because they are not talking about their lie any longer. A little later, change the subject back to what you were talking about before. If the person seems uncomfortable again, they may be lying.

It’s very hard for a liar to avoid filling silence created by you. He or she wants you to believe the lies being woven; silence gives no feedback on whether or not you’ve bought the story. If you’re a good listener, you’ll already be avoiding interruptions, which in itself is a great technique to let the story unfold.

Just because a person is showing these behaviors, it doesn’t mean they are lying. They might be shy or nervous. But if you think someone is lying, you might want to use some of these techniques. Hopefully, you won’t need to very often.

1. By saying“Liars also use deflection.”,the writer means that liars may ______.

【推荐2】When she graduates from Columbia University next year with a master’s degree in Public health, Eric Wheeler is hoping to get a job in international reproductive(生殖) health. The 26-year-old post-graduate has always wanted to work in public service. But public service doesn’t pay much, and her two-year program at Columbia costs about $50,000 a year with living expenses. She has a scholarship from Columbia that covers just $4,000 a year and has taken out loans to pay for the rest. She worries that she will spend years paying back her student loans and not have money left over to put away in an IRA. Wheeler is wondering what she can do to ease the pain of being in debt. Is there anything she can do to handle the debt?
The good news is that in 2007, Congress recognized that there were so many students in Wheeler’s position that it passed the College Cost Reduction and Access Act. There were two programs established by this act that Wheeler should look into.
The first is the income-based repayment plan, which allows lower-income graduates with a lot of debt to reduce their monthly payments. Depending on a graduate’s income and level of debt, the program, which goes into effect on July 1, could limit his or her annual educational loan debt repayment to 15 percent of discretionary income(可随意支配的收入),said Peter Mazareas, vice chairman of the College Saving Foundation.
The second is the public service loan forgiveness plan, in which the federal government will forgive the remaining debt of borrowers who make 10-year loan payment while working full time in public-service jobs. But the graduate must have a certain loan which is listed in the plan. Depending on the level of debt Wheeler ends up with and how much she repays over 10 years, Mazareas said she could end up with about $75,000 of her debt forgiven. “ Typically, it is projected that a borrower who performs public service under this program will repay only about one-fourth to one-half as much money as a borrower who does not”, he said. He also pointed out that public service is broadly defined and includes any government and nonprofit organization job.
1. How much debt will Erin Wheeler be probably in when she graduate?
A.$ 8,000B.$92,000
C.$75,000D.$ 50,000
2. Which of the following is true about the College Reduction and Access Act?
A.The programs in the act take effect in 2008.
B.The act only aims to help college students who are in debt.
C.There are two helpful programs in the act.
D.The graduates who work in public service benefit the most.
3. How can people benefit from the first plan mentioned in the passage?
A.The interest of the debt will be lowered.
B.The total amount of debt could be reduced.
C.The income tax will be cut down.
D.People will have more time to pay back the debt.
4. Why does the author say Erin wheeler should look into the second plan in the act?
A.Because she plans to work in public service.
B.Because she will have a master degree.
C.Because she will be heavily in debt upon graduation.
D.Because she has borrowed money from the federal government.
5. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.The total expense in American universities is too high.
B.The federal government is trying to relieve graduates from heavy debt.
C.The US government encourages students to choose public service jobs.
D.There are a lot of different programs to help students pay their tuition.

【推荐3】Meeting deadlines (最后期限) is a lot like playing a good game of chess. Good chess players plan five to ten moves ahead.     1     If you always focus on events several days down the road, you’ll be better equipped to handle any potential crises that pop up. It also allows you to set aside a day or two before the final deadline to improve your project and add finishing touches.     2

3     This is the number one reason people fail to meet deadlines. In this age of smartphones, tablets and cloud computing, there’s simply no excuse to be disorganized. Simply entering events in your Google Calendar will sync it across all your mobile devices so you can keep aware of all current deadlines.     4     This makes working with a team quite easy.

File documents neatly in your computer or cloud-based storage. People often waste time finding digital bits and pieces of their projects when they aren’t organized, using “search” to desperately find the document they “swear was saved to the desktop”. Good self-discipline is reflected in good organizational skills.

Last but not the least, always be ready to meet short-notice deadlines (紧急交付通知).     5     If you were able to manage your time effectively, meeting a sudden short-notice deadline should be very easy. Smoothly and coolly meeting a last minute deadline makes you look great—especially when your procrastinating co-workers are tearing their hair out.

A.People simply aren’t organized.
B.Break one large task into several small ones.
C.Don’t just focus on today—focus on the long run.
D.Bad chess players only concentrate on the current move.
E.They usually get worried as the last deadline approaches.
F.These occur at every workplace, upsetting employees and managers alike.
G.Cloud-based calendars and documents can also be shared and edited by teammates.
