Three years ago, I was offered a better job and went to work in a new clinic of a small hospital in Victor Harbor, an hour away from my house. I rushed there on my first day, driving to the clinic and getting used to the different rules there.
In my worry and anxiety, and feeling a little unfamiliar in the new environment, I removed my three rings according to the rules: my wedding ring, a ring that belonged to my mother and one that was a gift from my husband. I put them in a wrinkled tissue and placed them beside my computer.
During midday break, I ate my lunch at my desk and when I was finished, I hurriedly cleared away the waste, together with the wrinkled tissue into the rubbish bin. I went about my duties and my day went on well. I met new patients and felt that I had done a good job.
Driving home at the end of the day, just moments before I reached my house, I noticed that my rings were missing. I felt the heat in my body rise, my cheeks burning red. I went inside and tried to calm down. I spent an hour or so making telephone calls, trying to locate my rings. The first people I called were my manager and colleagues, and they gave me a few contact numbers for the cleaners. I got in touch with a lady who managed the cleaning services for the clinic, and she told me that the bins had already been emptied and gone to rubbish station.
Heartbroken, I knew nothing could be done then. I had lost my wedding ring and one of my most important rings-my mother’s wedding ring. If I had not been so careless, all this would not have happened. With great sorrow and regret, I just sat there in my chair wondering what I should do.

Sean was a single father of three kids who had just lost their mother to cancer. Shortly after, he had to sell his house to pay the medical bills. To make matters worse, he lost his job due to too much leave of absence he asked for in taking care of his wife while she was sick. Their lives sank into extreme poverty. He had to do part-time work to pay his debts. He never imagined what his life would become. Everything felt hopeless. He continued with his life, earning barely enough money to feed his kids.
Today was a bit different. He went to the nearest gas station. He had an extra $2 with which he could buy himself a cheap hot dog. It was a little treat he would give himself. Though it made him feel a bit guilty, he still wanted to do it. As he walked toward the gas station, he saw a man panicking, saying something to a woman in the car. Not knowing why they were so upset, he continued walking until the man called out to him.
“Sir! Sir!” the man shouted and ran toward him. “Yes? Is everything OK?” he asked, confused. “Sorry, sir, my wife is in labor (临产), but we’re out of gas. I had no money on me. Could you help me anyway?” the man asked. His desperate eyes pulled at Sean’s heartstrings. “Well, sir. I only have $2, but you can have it!” Sean said, reaching into his pocket and taking out the bills. “Thank you! Thank you! I can fill up and reach the hospital in time.” The man took the bills gratefully.
“I’m Matthew. Please give me your contact information so I can pay you back.” “No need. I only hope your wife and baby get to the hospital safely.” Sean smiled. But Matthew insisted. Finally, Sean gave him his number.

When I was in class with my students, snowflakes were flying by the classroom windows. “Snow! It’s snowing!” shouted one of my students. Another whispered, “I love snow.” The anticipation of more snow drew a dozen students to the windows. “Take a break,” I said, sharing in the magic of the snow.
The students’ excitement was evident as plans for snowmen, skiing and snowball fights filled the air. Cold winds beat the snow against the windows. The cold air came in through the window frame. But none of the students seemed to feel it. They all rushed out of the classroom.
With big eyes, a girl student screamed, “I’m making a snowman.” I smiled back to her. “Ms Lee, would you like to have a snow fight with us?” a boy student said to me. I just waved and silently admired the snow from the classroom. Nine minutes passed before I knew it.
“One minute to say goodbye to the snow and return to your seats,” I said loudly. All of the students had to continue with my class. I devoted myself to explaining knowledge to them and almost forgot about the snow. Suddenly, the vice headmaster tapped on the door. I turned and saw her smile. She reminded, “Early dismissal (解散)!” “Are we going home early?”asked my class with surprise. I nodded. As soon as the announcement was made over the loudspeaker, I was the only one in the classroom.
Seeing students picked up in cars by their family including their parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts and so on, I headed out for my car and prepared to go home. However, I found my car was covered with much snow. I grabbed my ice scraper and brushed off the outer layer of the snow. Once inside the car, I grasped the steering wheel and started the car. The roads were quite white. The snow was still coming down fast. I had to inch my way forward. I could feel tightness in my neck and shoulders. When I was almost home, suddenly, the front tires of my car slid into a snowbank. I tried to back up but failed. My hands were trembling with cold. I really needed help.

His father said, “All set, boy?” and Jeremy nodded, picking up his gun with awkward gloved hands. His father pushed open the door and they went out into the freezing dawn together. Ordinarily Jeremy would take out his camera to record the scenery, but not this morning. This was the morning, particularly sacred, when 14-year-old Jeremy would go duck hunting for the first time.
However, he hated it, and had hated the whole idea since his father bought him a gun. But he was determined to go through with it. He loved his father, and wanted his approval more than anything in the world.
They came to a narrow and hidden place facing the bay. Jeremy sat down nervously and waited. To reduce fear, he took a picture of his father against the clean water. Then he put the camera hurriedly on the grass and picked up his gun.
Jeremy got his gun ready. “I'll let you shoot first,” his father said, loading his own gun. “You know, I've been waiting for a long time for this day. Just the two of us..."He broke off, bending forward, eyes narrowed. “There's a small flight heading this way now. Keep your head down. I'll give you the word.”
The sun came out. Jeremy could see everything clearly: his father's face, tense and eager; the white frost on the gun. His heart was beating wildly. He prayed, “Don't let them come, please!”
But they kept coming. "Four black,” his father said. “One mallard (绿头鸭).” High above, Jeremy heard the pulsing whistle of wings as the flight began to circle. The mallard was leading, his feet dropping down, reaching for the silver-colored water. Closer, closer... “Get set,” his father whispered.
“Now!” cried Jeremy's father. “Take them!”
Jeremy felt his body obey. He stood up, holding the gun. In the same instant, the wild ducks saw the gunners and flew. “Shoot!” said something sharply in Jeremy's brain. But up went the mallard higher still, until suddenly he caught the full force of the wind and flew away, out of range.

Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens-her music teacher to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing. Mrs. Owens took a look at Amy’s body and said, “Child, you just don’t fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too.”
Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Buttler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.
Emily didn’t want to be rejected again, so she hesitated a little about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Buttler called, “Emily, you’re next.” Although kind of nervous, Emily did as Mr. Buttler told her to do. Mr. Buttler sat by the piano to keep Emily company. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Buttler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn’t sleep that night. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn’t fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain because of stress.

I was lying in bed in the dark ready for sleep I got the heart-broken news that my parents lost their lives in the flight accident. I couldn’t accept the news for a long time, since nobody would stay with me in the empty house. In the weeks that followed, with depression and grief, I decided to continue seeing the counselor on my own. One day, he gave me a homework assignment: I was to write down a list of one hundred life goals in my rest of my life.
It took me two weeks to complete the task. When I finally handed over the list, I was instructed me to pick one goal and take two small steps toward it before the following week. Looking over my list of one hundred goals, I chose. “Fly an airplane.” I bought a flying magazine. That was one step. Then I went to a local airport and arranged with a flight instructor to take a low-cost “Discovery Flight.”
And so began my journey to become a pilot, starting from scratch. No knowledge. No experience. When I bought $300 worth of textbooks, I began to question what I’d gotten myself into. Then came the fear that accompanies every new challenge thrown at one while flying.
That’s when I realized I needed to adjust my mental attitude. Somewhere along the way, I had read that people should tell themselves they were the best at whatever they were attempting to do. I took this to heart. With that well-hidden confidence. I sought the help of flight instructors and ground instructors. The instructors encouraged me to believe that I was born to be a super pilot and just to recover all this “lost” ability. No way would I ever miss a flying training class.
Eventually, the time came for my first flight check with the chief instructor, an airline pilot with 11,000 hours. As if I wasn’t nervous enough already, one of my classmates told me that he’d recently been through the same routine. Not only did he fail but he actually cried. But passing the test is a must to get the pilot certification.
