Fun Facts about Pigeons

Pigeons are the most misunderstood of all creatures. Upon seeing a flock of pigeons, many people want     1     more than to run a mile in the other direction. Pigeons are commonly viewed as carriers and spreaders of disease, but that’s actually not true. People may be surprised to learn that these creatures have a number of     2     (fascinate) characteristics that should not be overlooked.

First, pigeons are highly skilled navigators (领航员). A pigeon can find its way back to its nest after     3     (transport) more than a thousand miles away from it! Because of this ability, humans     4     (use) pigeons to their advantage for centuries.

Another interesting yet not so admirable quality of pigeons is that they appear to be master procrastinators (拖延者). Scientific studies have shown that pigeons often delay the completion of a dull or troublesome task when an immediately     5     (convenient) alternative is available. Maybe pigeons could “give humans a run for their money” when it comes to putting off work!

Next, we come to the unpleasant topic of pigeon droppings. Urban dwellers are used to seeing streets     6     (litter) with these droppings. Although pigeon poo is seen as a problem in modern times, several centuries ago, it was actually considered a valuable commodity     7     its usefulness as a fertilizer.

Finally, it cannot be denied     8     intelligent creatures pigeons are. In addition to their navigation skills and excellent sense of hearing, they can distinguish between the letters of the Roman alphabet and differentiate between human faces in photographs.

So,     9     you feel disgusted upon encountering a pigeon,     10     (remember) that besides carrying little disease risk, these birds are smart creatures with many wonderful abilities.

Can Indoor Plants Really Purify the Air?

Plants are very important to human life. Through photosynthesis (光合作用), they transform carbon dioxide into fresh oxygen. They     1    (assume) to remove toxins from the air we breathe—but is this true?

One famous NASA experiment, published in 1989, has found indoor plants can clean the air by removing pollutants     2    (cause) cancer. Later research has found soil micro-organisms in the potted plant also     3    (play) a part in cleaning indoor air.

Based on this research, some scientists say house plants are effective natural air purifiers, and the bigger and leafier the plant, the better. The amount of leaf surface area influences the rate of air purification.     4    , however, say the evidence that plants can effectively accomplish this feat (功绩) is far from conclusive.

“There are no definitive studies to show that having indoor plants can significantly increase the air quality in your home,”     5    Luz Claudio, a professor of environmental medicine and public health. “There’s no question     6    plants are capable of removing volatile (易挥发的) chemical toxins from the air under laboratory conditions,” says Claudio. But in your home or office space, the notion that putting a few plants together can purify your air doesn’t have much hard science     7    (back) it up.

Most research efforts to date, including the NASA study, placed indoor plants in small,     8    (seal) environments to assess how much air-purifying power they have. “But those studies aren’t really applicable to what happens in a house. In many cases, the air in your home completely turns over—that is, exchanges places with outdoor air—once every hour. In most instances, air exchange with the outside has a     9    (great) effect on indoor air quality than plants.” says Stanley Kays, a professor of horticulture (园艺学).

Disappointed     10    many people may be by what Kays said, the professor also made it clear that he believes house plants are beneficial. Studies have shown plants can knock out stress and make people feel happier. More research shows spending time around nature has a positive effect on a person’s mood and energy levels.

A penguin colony in Antarctica that’s home to over 18,000 pairs of Adélie penguins suffered a massive breeding failure, with all but two of the babies starving to death when their parents     1     (force) to travel further in search of food during this breeding season.

According to CNN, the World Wildlife Fund said unseasonably extensive amounts of sea ice around the colony forced the adult penguins to travel further     2     (hunt) for food. The babies did not survive the parents’ journeys. “This disastrous event contrasts with     3     image that many people might have of penguins,”     4     (say) Rod Downie, Head of Polar Programs at WWF.

Downie continued: “The impact of this event is restricted to this specific colony of Adélie penguins, and predictions are that the Antarctic will get     5     (warm) and this may pose different     6     (challenge) in the longer term.”

Adélie penguins are     7     (general) doing well in East Antarctica and there they mostly eat krill, a small shrimp like crustacean.     8     they are declining in the peninsula,     9     the effects of climate change are already being felt. In addition     10     the climate change, the local penguin population is further threatened because of proposals to open the area to the krill fishing industry.
