Quantum computer chips demonstrated at the highest temperatures ever

Quantum computing is heating up. For the first time, quantum computer chips     1     (operate) at a temperature above -272℃, or 1 kelvin. That may still seem frigid, but it is just warm enough to potentially enable a huge leap in the capabilities.

Quantum computers are made of quantum bits, or qubits(量子比特),     2     can be made in several different ways. One that     3     (receive) attention from some of the field’s big players consists of electrons on a silicon chip.

These systems only function at extremely low temperatures-below 100 millikelvin, or -273.05℃ -so the qubits have to be stored in powerful refrigerators. The electronics that power them won’t run at such low temperatures, and also emit heat that could disrupt the qubits, so     4     are generally stored outside the refrigerators with each qubit is connected by a wire to its electronic controller.

“Eventually, for useful quantum computing, we will need to go to something like a million qubits, and this sort of brute force method, with one wire per qubit, won’t work any more,” says Menno Veldhorst at QuTech in the Netherlands. “It works for two qubits, but not for a million.”

Veldhorst and his colleagues,     5     another team led by researchers at the University of New South Wales in Australia, have how demonstrated that these qubits can be operated at     6     (high) temperatures. The latter team showed they were able to control the state of two qubits on a chip at temperatures up to 1.5 kelvin, and Veldhorst’s group used two qubits at 1.1 kelvin in     7     is called a logic gate, which performs the basic operations that make up more complex calculations.

8     we know the qubits themselves can function at higher temperatures, the next step is incorporating the electronics onto the same chip. “I hope that     9     we have that circuit, it won’t be too hard to scale to something with practical applications,” says Veldhorst.

Those quantum circuits will be similar in many ways to the circuits we use of traditional computers, so they can be scaled up relatively easily     10     (compare) with other kinds of quantum computers, he says.

Digital technology is being increasingly adopted     1     (carry) out economic and social activities, and is deeply transforming production patterns and people’s lifestyles. However, it is important that the adoption of digital technology in developing countries does not     2     (wide) the rich-poor gap. In China, e-commerce and poverty alleviation (扶贫) programs     3     (support) by big data have had positive effects on fighting poverty.

E-commerce (电子商务) promotes growth in incomes’ for the poor. China has the world’s fastest-growing e-commerce market,     4     more than 40 percent of global e-commerce transactions (交易) take place. Many poor people have benefited     5     the booming e-commerce industry. For example, in the past years, the National Rural E-commerce Comprehensive Demonstration Project     6     (help) nearly 3 million poor families realize income growth. Besides, E-commerce platforms have greatly increased the possibility     7     the small and micro businesses enter the market. Rural residents can now display     8     (they) farm produce and handicrafts online and find buyers, thus increasing sales. Also, e-commerce drives the development of whole industrial chains, creating job opportunities and providing diverse options for rural labor.

Digital technology has been playing a positive role in China’s poverty     9     (reduce). Governments at all levels keep an open and encouraging attitude toward the development of the digital economy and much     10       (active) cooperate with digital companies to better identify and help the poor.

1     internet technology expanding every day, it is hard to keep up with the innovative software that keeps popping up on a regular basis.     2     Bitcoin was first introduced in 2009, it is still a relatively new player in the online payment system. What makes this internet payment network so special is its     3     (unique). It makes it possible to transfer Bitcoin currency from one peer to another quickly and effectively. The processing fees are very low and you can make worldwide payments in minutes.

Bitcoin is a digital currency that is bought, sold and transferred between fellow     4     (use) of the same payment network. The process begins when the prospective member downloads the software to their computer or phone. Once you     5     (complete) this process you will receive a Bitcoin address. The address is used to send you payments for goods or services rendered. This currency can also     6     (buy) on a market exchange. You can sell your bitcoins at this exchange as well. The unique thing about this payment network is that the currency is decentralized. It is not owned or controlled by any bank or     7     (finance) institution. It is not insured by the FDIC. It is open to anyone that wants to become a member. More and more merchants     8     (accept) this digital currency for their goods or services. There is no risk and the encryption process is very effective.

The following shows how the bitcoin works. You install a wallet on your computer or phone. You receive your new IP address. Then you begin accumulating bitcoins through purchase or transactions. All transactions on the payment network are stored in a Block Chain, which is nothing more than a     9     (share) public ledger. Bitcoins are transferred instantly and is verified mathematically by the network. Currency is transferred from one wallet to another quickly, safely, and securely. The Bitcoin mining process is     10     the transactions are constantly stored in the block chain and then verified by the computer.

Three Hours a Week: Play Time’s over for China’s Young Video Gamers

China has forbidden under-18s from playing video games for more than three hours a week, a stringent(严苛的)social intervention that it said was needed to pull the plug on a growing addiction to     1     it once described as “spiritual opium(鸦片)”.

The new rules,     2     (publish) on Monday, are part of a major shift by Beijing to strengthen control over its society and key sectors of its economy, including tech, education and property, after years of runaway growth.

The restrictions, which apply to any devices including phones, are a body blow to a global gaming industry that caters to tens of millions of young players in the world’s most profitable market.

They limit under - 18s to     3     (play) for one hour a day - 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. - on only Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, according to the Xinhua sate news agency. They can also play for an hour, at the same time, on public holidays.

The rules from the National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) regulator coincide with a broader clampdown(压制)by Beijing     4     China’s tech giants, such as Alibaba Group and Tencent Holdings.

The campaign     5     (prevent) what state media has described as the “savage growth” of some companies has wiped tens of billions of dollars off shares traded at home and abroad.

Gaming companies will be barred from providing services to minors in any form outside the stipulated(规定)hours and     6     ensure they have put real-name verification systems in place, said the regulator,     7     oversees the country’s video games market.

The new rules swiftly became one of the most discussed topics on Weibo, China’s answer to Twitter. Some users expressed support for the measures     8     others said they were surprised at how drastic(严厉的)the rules were.

“This is so fierce that I’m utterly speechless,” said one comment that received over 700 likes.     9     expressed doubt that the restrictions could be enforced. “They will just use their parent’s logins, how can they control it?” asked one.

The NPPA regulator told Xinhua it     10     (increase) the frequency and intensity of inspections for online gaming companies to ensure they were putting in place time limits and anti-addiction systems. It also said that parents and teachers played key roles in curbing gaming addiction.
