Crash! The old black pickup truck in front of me stopped. I didn’t. I crashed into its back breaking the fender (挡泥板) and bending the driver’s door of my car. To make matters worse, it wasn’t my car. It was my father’s. I shouldn’t have been driving it, and now I had destroyed it.

A farmer jumped out of the truck, slowly and carefully, and looked at the damage. I sat sobbing (抽噎), my lip bleeding where I’d bitten it. He was in a hurry to leave, but we managed to exchange names and phone numbers before he pulled out onto the highway again. I followed, knowing I dared not go home. I’d be in big trouble.

It was my high school graduation day. I drove to school and climbed out through the passenger door. Surveying the broken fender and the door, tears flowed down my face, which was rapidly becoming swollen. I walked into the gym and joined my classmates to prepare for the graduation party. Bad news traveled fast, and soon a teacher came to me

“You’ll have to go home to get dressed for the graduation sooner or later,” she said. “Sooner would be much better and you have to tell your parents.”

I finally agreed and slowly drove home. The Death March sounded in my ears.

My mother took one look at my face when I got home and screamed, “What on earth happened?”

I hung my head and tears rolled down my face again. “I crashed Daddy’s car.”

She threw up her hands in panic and rushed to the backyard where Dad was making burgers. “Stop cooking, Ted. We’re not going to eat. Jean has destroyed your car.”

Dad looked at her and said quietly, “Is she hurt?”

“No, except for biting her lip.”

“Well, then, what does that have to do with eating dinner?” He put a burger on a plate with the others, then walked across the yard and put his arm around me. “Let’s go inside and hear all about this if you’re sure you’re all right.” I sobbed and nodded.

On the Saturday morning, I could see rays of sunlight as I said good morning to my brother, Willie aged six while I was nine. Breaking up for a summer holiday, I felt at ease and plotted (暗中策划) our own delightful day.

“Good morning, sleepy head,” Mum smiled at me. “Get yourself dressed, Shawn. Run out and collect some firewood. I’ll fix you some hotcakes.”

I slipped on my clothes, grabbed the ax and headed straight for the outhouse. There father sat freely with a bottle of beer in hand. During the summer holiday, he would find time to take us to catch some fish for supper. However, his fishing pole missing, we could have no choice but to try something different.

I walked with my chin up as I thought about what a great day this was going to be. Willie and I were going to ride our bikes into town, and I was sure we’d find some empty bottles, maybe enough to buy some ice cream, my favorite while Willie had a preference for sweets. With the birds bouncing (跳动) up and down in the tree, I thought it was going to be a great day.

Everything done, Mum’s hotcakes were waiting for me. Willie finished his breakfast in a flash.

“Mum, can we go now?” I asked, as I swallowed down the last forkful of hotcakes.

“Now, Shawn, you be careful. Willie hasn’t gone out on the roads much, so you let him ride ahead of you. Keep a good eye on him. OK?”

“Take care, Willie,”I screamed when we cycled towards a mountain called Andover, the peak of which was the perfect spot to find empty bottles. Stark’s Store paid cash, two cents each, and we thought we were rich every time Mr. Stark handed us our reward in real money. Cycled up the mountain was a lot of work, but it was worth it.

I was born into a big family. As the fifth of seven children, I went to the same public school as my three older sisters and brother. Every year, my mother went to the same scene and had parent/child interviews with the same teachers. The only thing different was the child. And every child participated in an old school tradition — the annual plant sale held in early May, just in time for Mother’s Day.

Third grade was the first time that I was allowed to take part in the plant sale. I wanted to surprise my mother, but I didn’t have any money. I went to my oldest sister and shared the secret, and she gave me some money. When I arrived at the plant sale, I carefully made my selection and spent a long time inspecting each plant to ensure that I had indeed found the best geranium (天竺葵). Once I had taken it secretly home, with the help of my sister, I hid it in the attic (阁楼). I was very nervous for fear that my mother would find it before Mother’s Day, but my sister assured me that she wouldn’t, and indeed she did not.

When Mother’s Day arrived, I got up very early, went into the attic on tiptoe and carried the carefully-selected geranium to the kitchen, where my mother was preparing breakfast. “It’s for you!” I gave the flower to mum and hugged her tightly.

The year I was fifteen, my younger sister reached third grade. In early May she came to me full of wonder and secrecy and told me that there was going to be a plant sale at school, and she wanted to surprise our mother. As my older sister did for me, I gave her some money and off she went.

【推荐3】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

The Lunar New Year for 2019 fell on February 5th. Public Schools in New York gave the kids the day off to celebrate. It was sunny. How should I spend such a nice day? I decided to take my daughter to an ice rink (溜冰场). I used to ice-skate in my childhood and I assumed ice-skating was a skill like riding a bike. My 6-year-old was desperate to learn. I couldn't think of a better day to take her for her first spin around the pond.

We arrived at the Wollman Rink near the south end of Central Park and I got us both laced up. We awkwardly worked our way to the entrance of the rink and stepped onto ice that was more slippery than I remembered. No sooner had our blades (冰刀) touched the frozen ice than both my daughter and I felt ourselves rushing toward the ground. I managed to keep my balance by clinging to (紧贴着) the wall surrounding the rink and my daughter stayed upright by clinging to me. I caught my breath and made a game plan: Don't fall down. In my mind, as a middle-aged woman, falling was to be avoided at all costs.

Falling hurts. It's hard to get back up. The ice is cold. I decided if we could just stay upright, I could count our day as a success. So around the rink we went, me holding tightly to my daughter's hand. Any time our balance changed, I would push our hands skyward, leaving her swinging above the ice like a fish on a line. We repeated this move for two rotations (圈) around the rink and then I gave up. The stress of keeping us both standing was too much. “Maybe we can come back another time,” I told her.

At that moment, one of her friends from school appeared.
