Justin and Mary woke up early, even though they were vacationing at their uncle's lake house. The night before, Uncle Thomas told them about the Foggy Figure that haunts (经常出没于) the lake. Justin and Mary were determined to see the ghostly creature before their vacation was over.

“Is it foggy outside?” Mary asked, as Justin carefully looked out the window.

“Yup! Let's go!” Justin let go of the curtain and rushed to the door with Mary.

It was only 5:00 a. m., so everyone else in the house was still asleep. As they moved quietly through the kitchen to the back door, Mary sniffed the air. It had the faint scent (气味) of coffee and something sweet. A sense of hunger struck her. "Maybe we should first have a breakfast, "she thought. But she still followed Justin out the door, down the back steps, and out onto the boat dock (码头). The fog had settled over the lake, making it impossible to see anything.

"Do you see anything?" Mary asked, moving forward for a closer look.

"Nothing. Do you think Uncle Thomas was just trying to scare us with that story?”

Uncle Thomas did have a good imagination. He'd been telling Justin and Mary stories for years, but this was the first scary story. Mary had a feeling it wasn't made up.

Mary shook her head. “Remember what Uncle Thomas said? The Foggy Figure haunts the lake. We're on the dock. Maybe that's why we can't see him. The people in the story were in boats.”

“You want to take a boat ride on the water?” Justin asked.

Mary looked around, trying to find Uncle Thomas's boat, but the fog was too thick.

“Mom and Dad will be really angry if we go out on the lake alone in this fog,” Justin said.

Mary shrugged (耸肩). “Maybe we don't have to go anywhere. We could sit in the boat while it's docked. That wouldn't be dangerous.”

“Okay.” Justin moved toward the end of the dock. He could barely see the outline of the boat. “I’ll go first.”

As the late afternoon sun beat down on his farm in Missouri last May, Brandon finished feeding his cows and decided to go home. As they often did, his two sons, Louie, 7, and Everett, 5, followed closely.

As they headed for the house, the two boys ran ahead of their father, who stopped to close the gate. Louie paused at a board covering an old well. The board had, over time, become easily broken. When Louie stepped on it, it caved in and he fell into the well. Brandon had just close the door when he heard a cry for help. He turned around and found his younger son Everett standing alone beside the well, pointing to it and screaming.

Brandon quickly realized what had happened. “No, Louie can barely swim,” he panicked, his mind almost going blank. However, he knew he should calm down. He ran to the well and heard Louie hitting the water. Without thinking, he jumped in. Somehow, Brandon managed to grab on to a pipe that ran down the side of the well. He hit the cold water at the bottom of the well and lifted Louie up as he stuck his own legs and back against the narrow walls for support. “All right, Dad, we can climb out now,” Louie said.

If only it were that easy!

The pipe that he’d grabbed during his fall was too slippery to be of any use. There was only one way out. Looking up to see Everett looking down at them, Brandon shouted, “Everett, you’re going to have to be a big boy and save us. Run to the road and stand by the mailbox until someone stops. Tell them we need help. And Everett, stay off the road.”

My sister Megan always felt a little afraid while babysitting(临时照看小孩)at the Quinns' house. It was set back from the road by a long, winding driveway, and the yard was filled with so many pine trees that she couldn't see any of the neighbors' lights.

On this particular night, the snow was falling heavily outside. The girls begged her to read them their favorite story, and afterward they fell asleep. Megan settled on the sofa to watch an old movie on television.

Around ten o'clock, a loud knock on the door surprised her. Megan spied through the peephole(窥视孔)and saw a middle-aged man standing in the entryway.

"Who is it?" she asked.

"Your brother Ben."

Megan realized the man had mistaken her for his sister. She replied, "Mrs. Quinn can't come to the door right now. "She thought of her mother's warming: Never open the door for a stranger while you' re babysitting.

"The truth is I'm babysitting," she said through the screen. The words were out of her mouth before she remembered her mother's second warning: Don't advertise that you're alone. Megan quickly added, "Mrs. Quinn will be home soon.”

"It's awfully cold out here. Can I wait inside?" The man asked.

Megan hesitated. "Couldn't you come back in a little while?"

"I drove all the way from Newport. I don't have anywhere else to go." The man smiled.

"Please let me in. I promise I won't bother you."

"Mrs. Quinn left a number for me to contact her," Megan said. "I'll call her and see what she says."

The smile disappeared from the man's face. "You're going to leave me outside to freeze to death in the meantime? Wait until she finds out you wouldn't let me in! You'll be in so much trouble!" With the words he left.

Megan trembled. Maybe it was true. Maybe she would get in trouble. What if Mrs. Quinn asked her why she didn't let her brother in? How could Megan explain that he was absolutely rude? Would Mrs. Quinn think she was not mature enough to babysit? Maybe she'd never call her again.

The Christmas holidays were fast approaching, and we had ordered many gifts online. So, when the doorbell rang, I was sure some of the packages had arrived. I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there. I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful calico kitten (杂色猫) sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there?

We figured that someone had found the kitten somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed we would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.

My husband called her our little angel, so we named her accordingly. She had a calm aura (气质) about her as she walked straight into our home and hearts, fitting in perfectly. It seemed as if she was always meant to be in this big house with us. She was an old soul and turned out to be the perfect companion. Always by my side, she was more like a puppy than a kitten. Wise beyond her years, she enjoyed wandering through the tunnels and mysterious rooms as much as I did, but with much less fear. Angelica the calico was courageous.

So, I took a page from her book and decided to be brave, too. There was an underground stone cellar (地窖) I had been eager to explore. The only way in was down a rickety (摇晃的) ladder to its murky depths. I guessed it was an old root cellar, probably twelve feet deep.

I had promised my husband that I wouldn’t explore dangerous areas unless he or someone else was around. Though I knew I was stretching it, I figured that Angelica would count as my companion. I was ready to explore this cellar, and so was she.

I equipped myself with a good flashlight and warm clothes, and carefully started down the rickety ladder while Angelica was looking down at me from above. Faint crack and sudden crash were what I could remember.
