At the top of a hill called Mount Lee in Los Angeles on the west coast of the USA is a very famous sign, recognizable to people around the world. My job is to look after this sign.     1     The first film was made there in 1907 and by 1912, at least 15 independent studios could be found making films around town.

In the 1940s, TV started to become popular and some Hollywood film studios closed, but then TV companies moved in and took them over. Modern Hollywood was born.     2     If one of them ever fell down I would have to put it back up at exactly the same angle. They follow the shape of Mount Lee and this is part of their fame.

I am responsible for maintaining and protecting the sign.     3     When I first arrived in 1989, security was pretty low-tech-we put up a fence around the sign to stop people messing with it. But people just jumped over the fence. The back of the sign was black with graffiti(涂鸦)there was wire across it, but they still got through. So I decided to improve the effectiveness of the security.

Now we have motion-detectors and cameras. Everything goes via the internet to a dedicated surveillance(监控)team watching various structures around the city. Even so, people still try to climb over the barrier, mostly innocent tourists surprised that you can’t walk right up to the sign. But they can get a closer look on one of my regular tours.

4     They want to light the sign, paint it pink, or cover it in something to promote their product. You’ll get a really enthusiastic marketing executive call up, terribly excited because they think they’re the first person to think of this or that idea. They mostly get turned down. That’s because we don’t like to change the image and we hope it will have the same significance for generations to come.

A.The letters in the sign weren’t straight and still aren’t.
B.I have been working there for nearly 30 years.
C.People call up with the most ridiculous ideas.
D.It says Hollywood and that’s of course the place where films have been made for over a hundred years.
E.We used to have real problems.
F.Payment must be made for those ideas for commercial purposes.

【推荐2】Few things have helped create the look of the English countryside more than hedges(树篱). Hedges have been used for a long time in England, yet for all their ancientness, much of the familiar checkerboard pattern they help create is of very recent age.

Hedges have been used as field boundaries in England since the times of the Romans. Archaeological discovery at Farmoor(Oxon) shows Roman hedges were made of thorn(荆棘). The Anglo-Saxons also used hedges widely, and many that were used as estate boundaries still exist. Although these early hedges were used as field enclosures(圈地)or to mark the boundaries of one person’s possessions, there was no systematic planting of hedges in England until the first enclosure movement of the 13th century.

The pressures of population expansion led to a widespread clearing of land for agriculture, and the new fields needed to be marked clearly. Later, farming expansion in the 15th century led to more widespread hedge planting, but the greatest use of hedges came in the Enclosure Movement of the 18th and 19th centuries. The Enclosure Movement is a fancy term that historians use to describe the habit of wealthy landowners enclosing common fields for their own use, usually for the purpose of raising sheep.

Hedges are used as field boundaries in the lowland of England. In the highlands, such as the Yorkshire Dales, dry stone walls are commonly used. So great was the need for hedges during the Enclosures that a whole new industry sprang up supplying hawthorn(山楂)plants to be used in planting new hedges.

In the process of enclosure many rural labourers lost their livelihood and had to move to the new industrial urban centres. So the next time you sigh over the timeless quality of the English hedge-shaped countryside, spare a thought for the pain and hardship caused by the expansion of hedged fields to much of England’s rural population.

1. What were hedges originally used for in England?
A.Enclosing common lands.
B.Marking the limits of fields.
C.Protecting agricultural crops.
D.Protecting sheep from the wolves.
2. What played the key role in the rapid expansion of hedges?
A.Immigration.B.Conflicts.
C.Agriculture.D.Tourism.
3. Which period saw the most hedges appear in England?
A.Roman times.B.The 13th century.
C.The 15th century.D.The 18th century.
4. Why were hawthorn plants badly needed according to paragraph 4?
A.They made good hedges.
B.They produced nice fruits.
C.They had beautiful shapes.
D.They were suitable food for sheep.

The Globe Theatre is one of the most well-known theatres in the world. In 1996, it was voted for the “best attraction in Europe”. However, this version of the Globe, completed in the mid-1990s with funds from the Shakespeare Globe Playhouse Trust, is not the original Globe built in the 1500s.

During the 16th century, plays were popular entertainment among all kinds of people from wealthy nobles to the working class.     1     Actors performed in small hotels throughout the countryside and in London. James Burbage, an actor and painter, build the first public playhouse in England called The Theatre because it was the first ever built in London. Now the audience could come to the actors rather than the other way around,     2    .

When Burbage died, his sons Cuthbert and Richard, took over The Theatre. The Land, however, on which the playhouse was built was not owned by Burbage.     3     The actors decided they would build their own theatre. They rented land near another theatre, The Rose, and used wood from The Theatre to build the first Globe Theatre. It was here that Shakespeare’s famous plays were performed.     4     The actors’ love for the Globe was so strong that when it burned down in 1613, they pooled their own money to rebuilt it, making it even better than before with beautiful decorations and details adorning(装饰) the stage.     5

A.The Theatre was a huge success.
B.This theatre could hold several thousand people!
C.Queen Elizabeth I of England had a great love for plays.
D.When one enters the Globe Theatre ,one is in the greatest theater.
