We all regard receiving presents as a pleasant experience and yet it can be one of the most awkward situations. It is often difficult to look pleased when you receive a gift which is useless or the wrong size.
So you will have to tell your favourite aunt that the T-shirt does not fit. But an exchange is not always that simple because there has to be a good reason for it.
But if you are returning something, no matter what the reason is, you will be expected to have proof of purchase. If the receipt cannot be found, then it is possible to use another proof of purchase such as a credit card receipt. If all of these have been lost, you may have to rely on a witness.
Many big stores have a much more tolerant policy towards return and see it as a gesture of good will to exchange goods without question. Stores including Marks & Spencer are well-known for their “no argument” policy on returned goods.
So if a shop refuses to exchange the goods or to offer a refund, the seller is likely to be within his legal rights unless there is something wrong with the goods. In that case, the boot is on the other foot. You have every right to demand a cash refund or a replacement, but only if you have returned it within a “reasonable” time.
A.It is unlike anything you would buy for yourself. |
B.However, shoppers should remember this is a privilege, not a right. |
C.Unfortunately, the law does not explain what it meant by “reasonable”. |
D.All you can do is exchange it after your friend or relative has gone home. |
E.Either the thing has to be broken or unsuitable for the job it was intended to do. |
F.You should make clear what your legal position is before returning goods to the shop. |

After all, we would recognize that iconic red label anywhere. But why did the company choose this shade for its logo in the first place?
Some claimed that the red color came from one of the company’s first advertisements, which featured Santa Claus wearing his famous red-and-white suit and holding a Coca-Cola bottle. But according to the Coca-Cola Company, its famous logo dates back to the very beginning of the brand itself. Over 130 years ago, Coca-Cola was sold in barrels at American drug stores and pharmacies. Alcohol was distributed in the same way. But while alcohol was taxed at the time, soft drinks were not. So, the Coca-Cola Company began painting its barrels red in order to help customers and tax officials differentiate them from barrels of wine.
And the design was made for easy decoration and advertisements in restaurants and stores. “You see a red disc icon on a storefront, and you know you’ll be able to get delicious, ice-cold Coca-Cola there.” said Ted Ryan, a Coca-Cola archivist. The Coca-Cola logo’s typography, the other hand, is an official font, called “Spencerian” It has been associated with the brand since the late he late 1,800s. But who is the person behind the iconic script? It was not the creator, but his book keeper Frank M Robinson, after he suggested that the two C’s would look attractive in advertising. This is just one of those random, interesting facts that may have just blown your mind. A few years after its original, the logo swapped the swirly font for a more Gothic style, which only lasted a year. Will it stay unchanged? Who knows?

Research shows that for kids to understand, speak and eventually read or write a language, they need to hear it -- lots of it. And it's' never too early for parents and to caregivers to get talking. That explains the booming industry in talking electronic toys that claim to help kids learn language.
Professor Anna Sosa, of Northern Arizona University, led the study and says she gave families three different kinds of toys to play with: books, traditional toys like humble blocks and a shape sorter, and electronic toys. Sosa says she picked those toys because they are advertised in their packaging as language-promoters for babies between the ages of 10 and 16 months.
"We had a talking on farm-animal names and things," Sosa says of the electronic toys. "We had a baby cell phone. And we had a baby laptop. So you open the cover and start pushing buttons, and it tells you things. The parent-child couples were asked to play separately with each type of toy over the course of three days."
"When there's something else that's doing some talking, the parents seem to be sitting on the sidelines and letting the toy talk for them and respond for them, "Sosa says. "That's bad because the best way a toy can promote language in infants and toddlers is by stimulating interaction between parent and child. There's simply no evidence that a young child can learn language directly from a toy. It isn't responsive enough. It isn't social."
As for the other toys, traditional blocks and puzzles stimulated more conversation than the electronic toys, and books outscored them all. But don't underestimate the humble block. While traditional toys fell short of books in interaction quantity, Sosa notes, they kept pace in terms of quality.

In the United States, a group of California scientists are working to develop a more effective and less costly substance (物质) to protect people from mosquitoes. The researchers are investigating the sense of smell in mosquitoes. They found the insects use the same receptor for identifying carbon dioxide in human breath as they do for the smell of our skin. Anandasankar Ray, who is leading the investigation, says scientists tested more than a million chemical compounds (化合物) until they found a substance called Ethyl Pyruvate. He says Ethyl Pyruvate makes the mosquitoes' receptors inactive. “When we apply Ethyl Pyruvate to a human arm and offer it to hungry mosquitoes in a cage, very few of the mosquitoes are attracted to the human arm because only a few of them are able to smell it out,” said Ray.
Genevieve Tauxe, a member of the research team, says it was not easy to find the neurons (神经元) of noble cells that recognize both the smell of human breath and skin. “With the device used to examine the mosquito, we are able to insert a very small electrode (电极) into the part of the mosquito's nose, where its smelling neurons are and where the smell is happening,” said Tauxe.
Anandasankar Ray says a product based on Ethyl Pyruvate may cost less to produce than DEFT, the most effective chemical treatment now in use. He says DEFT is too costly for most people who live in areas affected by malaria.
“Perhaps by finding smells that can attack other target receptors, we will be able to improve upon DEFT and finally have the next generation of insect behaviour control products,” said Ray.ytytzygx.

A study recently published in Animal Behavior suggests that bumblebees, when given the chance, like to fool around with toys.
Researchers from Queen Mary University of London conducted an experiment in which they set up a container that allowed bees to travel from their nest to a feeding area. But along the way, the bees could choose to pass through a separate section with several small wooden balls. Over 18 days, the scientists watched as the bees “went out of their way to roll wooden balls repeatedly, though there seems to be no apparent cause to drive them to do so.”
The finding suggests that like humans, insects also interact with inanimate (无生命的) objects as a form of play. Also similar to people, younger bees seemed to be more playful than adult bees. “Previous research has shown that there are lots of animals who play just for the purpose of enjoyment, but most examples come from young mammals and birds. This study provides a strong indication that insect minds are far more advanced than we might imagine,” Lars Chittka, who led the study, said.
The study’s first author, Samadi Galpayage, who is a PhD student at Queen Mary University, added that it is the evidence that insects may be able to experience feelings. “They can actually experience some kind of positive emotional states, even if basic, like other larger fluffy (覆有绒毛的) animals do. This sort of finding has led to our understanding of insects and will, hopefully, encourage us to respect and protect life on earth ever more,” she said in the statement.

【推荐3】Far below every town and city lies an invisible network of pipes crucial to the lives of their residents. Once water disappears down a pipe or toilet, it’s out of sight, out of mind. The water flows into containers that carry rainwater, wastewater and solid waste away. There are three main types of sewers (下水道): sanitary sewers, storm sewers and combined sewers. Among them, sanitary sewers function as a city’s veins (静脉). Water containing human and industrial waste is collected in sanitary sewers and carried to wastewater treatment plants. There, the solid waste is separated from the water, which is then purified before being released back into the environment. It will be reused for industrial, agricultural or environmental purposes. Furthermore, the gas from water treatment can be used to produce energy. They not only contribute to a healthy environment and good quality of life, but also achieve the goal of sustainable development.
While wastewater collection and treatment are critical to the health of urban residents, storm sewers also play an important role. In urban areas, green has given way to concrete. As a consequence, there has been a loss of the land’s natural water retention as concrete cannot take in rainwater. When an extreme weather event causes heavy rain, storm sewers must cope with the water, so it does not flood the city. However, storm sewers are only part of the solution to water management and flood prevention.
To reduce flooding, an integrated urban management plan has been adopted, where all the factors — storm sewers, land planning and economic development — are considered together. Engineering innovations, additional facilities and increased green space requirements in new development projects have improved water retention in cities.
Sewers help improve urban public health, prevent urban flooding and boost environmental protection. Together they protect vital water resources and maintain the safety of people and property.
1. What’s the function of sanitary sewers?A.Cleaning dirty water. | B.Collecting solid waste. |
C.Delivering used water. | D.Producing useful gas. |
