Far below every town and city lies an invisible network of pipes crucial to the lives of their residents. Once water disappears down a pipe or toilet, it’s out of sight, out of mind. The water flows into containers that carry rainwater, wastewater and solid waste away. There are three main types of sewers (下水道): sanitary sewers, storm sewers and combined sewers. Among them, sanitary sewers function as a city’s veins (静脉). Water containing human and industrial waste is collected in sanitary sewers and carried to wastewater treatment plants. There, the solid waste is separated from the water, which is then purified before being released back into the environment. It will be reused for industrial, agricultural or environmental purposes. Furthermore, the gas from water treatment can be used to produce energy. They not only contribute to a healthy environment and good quality of life, but also achieve the goal of sustainable development.
While wastewater collection and treatment are critical to the health of urban residents, storm sewers also play an important role. In urban areas, green has given way to concrete. As a consequence, there has been a loss of the land’s natural water retention as concrete cannot take in rainwater. When an extreme weather event causes heavy rain, storm sewers must cope with the water, so it does not flood the city. However, storm sewers are only part of the solution to water management and flood prevention.
To reduce flooding, an integrated urban management plan has been adopted, where all the factors — storm sewers, land planning and economic development — are considered together. Here’s a joke in the book: Two fish are in a tank. One says to the other, “Do you know how to drive this thing?” It works on the principle that we have started to imagine one thing—that the tank is the typical container people keep fish in—and, just in time, the following words tell us that our first assumption was wrong—it’s a heavy vehicle. For correctly figuring out the error, we are rewarded with a pleasurable feeling. The joke is an efficient way of encouraging this natural reaction, and comedians have become experts in slightly touching this mental funny-bone in order to make us laugh.
Ryan was right when he said that knowing the theory of humor wouldn’t help us that much as a comedy.During one exercise in the course, four of us were told to perform an opera. Susan and Caroline sang earnestly on either side of the stage, and I brought Henry to the floor, where we wrestled (摔跤) each other like out-of-control teenagers. The rest of the group was in uncontrollable fits of laughter. As a performer, I’ ll never appreciate just why it seemed so funny. But the point is that I would never have written this on the paper. Similarly, the accident had badly affected my emotion but it also allowed me to look more closely inside myself and discover things about myself I never would have realized. I learned how not to judge myself for my new limitations.
In 1973, another Icelandic volcano, Eldfell, broke out. Icelanders decided to bomb it with cold water until it froze and chose a different path. After their plan worked, they used the geothermal (地热) energy for the next 15 years to heat their homes. A good example of life bringing lemons, and making lemonade! One must move on from misfortunes, focusing only on the present moment and being hopeful for the future.
I ran from April 14th, 2010, to every kind of escape. Eventually I ended up in university for a new-found love in Earth sciences.
