Far below every town and city lies an invisible network of pipes crucial to the lives of their residents. Once water disappears down a pipe or toilet, it’s out of sight, out of mind. The water flows into containers that carry rainwater, wastewater and solid waste away. There are three main types of sewers (下水道): sanitary sewers, storm sewers and combined sewers. Among them, sanitary sewers function as a city’s veins (静脉). Water containing human and industrial waste is collected in sanitary sewers and carried to wastewater treatment plants. There, the solid waste is separated from the water, which is then purified before being released back into the environment. It will be reused for industrial, agricultural or environmental purposes. Furthermore, the gas from water treatment can be used to produce energy. They not only contribute to a healthy environment and good quality of life, but also achieve the goal of sustainable development.

While wastewater collection and treatment are critical to the health of urban residents, storm sewers also play an important role. In urban areas, green has given way to concrete. As a consequence, there has been a loss of the land’s natural water retention as concrete cannot take in rainwater. When an extreme weather event causes heavy rain, storm sewers must cope with the water, so it does not flood the city. However, storm sewers are only part of the solution to water management and flood prevention.

To reduce flooding, an integrated urban management plan has been adopted, where all the factors — storm sewers, land planning and economic development — are considered together. Engineering innovations, additional facilities and increased green space requirements in new development projects have improved water retention in cities.

Sewers help improve urban public health, prevent urban flooding and boost environmental protection. Together they protect vital water resources and maintain the safety of people and property.

【推荐1】Comedy and Psychology

Earlier this year I did a part-time comedy course. The class was taught by Ryan, a professional comedian.I had performed a show, which wasn’t originally meant to be a comedy. However, the audience laughed at my first joke, then continued to laugh throughout the routines that were meant to be serious. So it was the audience who told me I was funny, but I didn’ t understand why or how to control the comic (滑稽的) moments. So, I joined the course to learn.

“Turn off your editor that makes you say the right thing and remember how to be a child,” explained Ryan. “Don’t try to be clever. Don’t try too hard to be funny…and knowing all about the theory of humor is unlikely to help you much. Just behave in a silly way. That’s what people want to see on stage.”Ryan would help us loosen up by saying things like, “Wander around talking to others, but make sure that you’re the lowest status person here.”

I’ d say that understanding the psychology of humor has actually helped. Recently I came across the book Inside Jokes: Using Humor to Reverse-Engineer the Mind. Its main idea is that any self-directed intelligent system will need to correct its own fault. There’s a risk that the occasional error will be made. If this was boring or burdensome, we’d be less willing to do it. However, evolution has made the process fun.

Here’s a joke in the book: Two fish are in a tank. One says to the other, “Do you know how to drive this thing?” It works on the principle that we have started to imagine one thing—that the tank is the typical container people keep fish in—and, just in time, the following words tell us that our first assumption was wrong—it’s a heavy vehicle. For correctly figuring out the error, we are rewarded with a pleasurable feeling. The joke is an efficient way of encouraging this natural reaction, and comedians have become experts in slightly touching this mental funny-bone in order to make us laugh.

Ryan was right when he said that knowing the theory of humor wouldn’t help us that much as a comedy.During one exercise in the course, four of us were told to perform an opera. Susan and Caroline sang earnestly on either side of the stage, and I brought Henry to the floor, where we wrestled (摔跤) each other like out-of-control teenagers. The rest of the group was in uncontrollable fits of laughter. As a performer, I’ ll never appreciate just why it seemed so funny. But the point is that I would never have written this on the paper. It was a joyous, found moment.

1. Why did the author attend the comedy course?
A.He wanted to see how the theories worked in practice.
B.He discovered he had some natural ability in comedy.
C.He worried about how other performers would find him.
D.He got unpleasant experiences when performing a comedy.
2. Ryan required the people on the comedy course to______.
A.copy their favorite performance
B.imagine other people’ s reactions
C.help themselves feel comfortable
D.behave in a more playful manner
3. What is the purpose of the joke mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A.To discuss what humor brings about exactly.
B.To give an example of another kind of humor.
C.To prove the point about psychology of humor.
D.To show why some people are funnier than others.
4. What view does the author put forward in the end?
A.Visual humor is what appeals to people most.
B.What people find funny is often unpredictable.
C.Theories explaining humor tend to be mistaken.
D.Learning comic skills proves to be a difficult task.

【推荐2】To look inside an ant nest is to meet with an alien civilization. The boiling mass of worker ants beneath an upturned stone is both strangely reminiscent of(联想到)human society and strikingly different. There is an organization that fascinates us and a long line of myrmecophiles (or ant lovers) leads back all the way to King Solomon who in fact advised people to “go to the ant, consider her ways and be wise". This was exactly the inspiration behind Planet Ant, a TV program showcasing what we know about the kingdom of ants, and what ants can teach us about the human world.

Like us, ants build structures, find food, defend their societies and manage waste, and-also like us-they must be well organized. For example, the leaf-cutting ants of Planet Ant have special waste disposal areas for storing harmful waste and a team of “waste-disposal ants" dedicated to keeping the nest clean. But ants achieve this familiar final result in a very different way to humans. Human societies have centralized control, In other words, someone tells us what to do. Ants,on the other hand, have decentralized control and neither the queen nor any other ant directs work. Ant workers are the final self-starters, following specific , but potentially flexible, rules in certain situations.

Chemical trails underpin much of this self-organization. Foragers(觅食者)lay a mix of chemicals known as pheromone(信息素)behind them as they walk. Other ants follow the trail and if they find food they reinforce it, laying more pheromone as they return to the nest. Stronger trails are more likely to be followed, so trails leading to food become progressively reinforced, while trails with no food at the end fade away.

This combination of positive feedback and evaporation(蒸发)produces an effective foraging system that is very good at finding the quickest routes to food. This simple guiding principle, and others like it, have provided some useful solutions to the complex problems faced by engineers, computer scientists and businesses.

1. Why does the author mention King Solomon in the first paragraph?
A.To provide a background.
B.To show admiration for him.
C.To stress the wisdom of ants.
D.To explain an abstract theory.
2. How do ants behave while performing tasks?
A.They get orders from their partners.
B.They choose o do only routine tasks.
C.They choose to do only routine tasks.
D.They follow their own senses and certain rules.
3. What does the underlined word “underpin” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Decide.B.Support.C.Develop.D.Calculate.
4. What information can we get about trail pheromone from the text?
A.It comes from the food resources.
B.It appears before ants' self-organization.
C.It leads the following ants to food.
D.It helps ants find their way back home.

【推荐3】Almost everyone has heard the expression, "the calm before the storm". It is usually used to describe a peaceful period just before a very stressful situation or a tense argument.

British sailors coined the phrase in the late 1600s. They noted that before certain storms the seas would seem to become static(平静的) and the winds would drop. But why is it often so calm before a storm?

According to the US website How Stuff Works, a calm period occurs because many storms, tornadoes and hurricanes draw in all the warm and wet air from the surrounding area. As the air rises into the storm clouds, it cools and acts as “fuel for the storm, like petrol in a car”. Once the storm has taken all the energy it can from the air, it is pushed out from the top of the storm clouds and falls back down to ground level. As the air goes down, it becomes warm and dry. Warm and dry air is stable, so once it covers an area, it causes a calm period before the storm.

This same process also causes the “eye of the storm” in hurricanes and tornadoes. In these conditions, the calm occurs in the center of the storm because of the strong circling winds.

The Weather Network has a tip for working out how far away a storm is, First count how many seconds there are between a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder, roughly three seconds equal one kilometer. So, for example, if you count nine seconds, the storm is about three kilometers away. A good judge is that if your count is below 30 seconds, you should seek shelter straight away.

However, due to the complexity of storm system, not all storms are proceeded (领先) by calm. Given the right conditions, some storms announce themselves with heavy rain and icy winds. So, your best bet is to keep yourself updated with weather reports for any predictions regarding a coming storm in your area. That’s the most reliable and sensible way to predict the next display of nature’s temper.

1. What does the 3rd paragraph mainly tell us?
A.How a storm comes into being.
B.Why research is done on storm clouds.
C.Why a peaceful period occurs before a storm.
D.How dangerous a storm can be in certain situations.
2. How far away is the storm if you count 18 seconds between a lightning flash and a thunder clap?
A.Three kilometers.B.Four kilometers.
C.Five kilometers.D.Six kilometers.
3. What can we learn from the text?
A.Storms have a big influence on life.
B.It is not always quiet before a storm.
C.Weather reports may fail to predict a storm.
D.Heavy storms don’t usually last for a long time.
4. Where is the text probably taken from?
A.A science report.B.A weather report.
C.A touring guide.D.An advertisement.
