Walking in the city is very different from walking in the park. A small psychology study suggests urban environments can slow your step and possibly increase your mental load.     1

It can ease your mind and quicken your pace. The findings show that natural settings may potentially reduce cognitive (认知的) tiredness and improve reaction time straight away.     2

The first of the two experiments in the new study focused on people’s way of walking and cognitive load. During this trial, participants were fitted with sensors and a dozen motion control cameras were set up to watch them repeatedly walk down a l5-metre room at their natural speed. The wall opposite them showed an image of either a nature scene or a city scene.     3     On the whole, when walking in city settings, people reported that they felt more uncomfortable and they walked at a slower pace, indicating a higher cognitive load.

4     In the trial, participants were asked to distinguish (区分) between basic visual shapes on the computer while also in the presence of a natural or urban image (the same ones from the first experiment).

Measuring reaction time in both natural and urban settings, the team found results to support their idea. In urban environments, participants were slower in distinguishing between simple shapes.

5     Our brains take longer to process. However, more research is needed to prove that idea.

A.Nature influences us in many ways.
B.A walk through nature does the opposite, though.
C.They said they couldn’t concentrate properly after walking.
D.After each, participants were asked to rate their discomfort.
E.The study includes two experiments with two different ways.
F.The second experiment dug into some higher-level cognitive processes.
G.The reason is that urban environments are more likely to take our attention away.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍最近的研究表明,对自己的人际关系感到焦虑的人往往更善于识别说谎的人,并且更有可能在危险出现时发出警报。

【推荐1】One way to prevent anxiety from getting out of control is to recognise its benefits. It is a mistake to think that we’d make better decisions if only we keep our feelings under control. Instead, a mix of feelings like anxiety and logical thinking leads to sound decision-making. It’s true that there is plenty of research showing that higher levels of anxiety can make us more likely to avoid risks in our decision-making. There is also evidence that anxiety can increase the attention you pay to relevant information.

Recent studies have shown that people who are anxious about their relationships (for example,   they fear to be abandoned) tend to be better at recognising people who tell lies and are more likely to raise the alarm when danger is present.

In the real world though, it’s worth realising that feeling anxious once in a while is extremely common. It communicates to others that you care, and what’s more, it’s probably a sign that you are intelligent. At least two published studies have identified that people who score higher on measures of anxiety also tend to perform better on intelligence tests. This seems reasonable: if you’re a thinker, you are sure to be always thinking about the future and imagine possible plots, including bad ones.

The important thing, if you are a worrywart (杞人忧天者), is not to let your fear destroy your dreams. And don’t bury your head in the sand. Instead, act on your fears—do the research as well as preparation, so rather than walking blindly into that which you fear, you meet the challenge in full readiness.

When anxiety beats you, or casts a shadow over your life, this is a serious problem. No one is denying that. But like everyday anxiety of this kind that you feel before a presentation or an interview,   you needn’t see it as your enemy. Anxiety is an important feeling, developed through evolution. As for people who are fairly anxious by nature, there is reason for cheer, too. Your nerves are a sign of your watchfulness. Listen to them and act on them. Then you can turn your nervousness into your advantage.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。如果你喜欢踢足球;那么你可能会时不时地梦想着在一场大型比赛中打入致胜一球,倒钩射门有助于实现这一梦想。

【推荐2】Do you love to play soccer? If you do, then you’ve probably daydreamed from time to time about scoring the winning goal in a big game. Perhaps you’ve even pictured exactly how it would happen. A bicycle kick (倒钩射门) can help you.

There are probably very few soccer players who haven’t dreamed of scoring a goal on a bicycle kick. It’s a feat even more impressive than a hat trick. You can try to describe a perfect bicycle kick, but somehow words struggle to convey the magic found in this unique combination of grace, beauty, and athletic prowess (超凡技术). In soccer, few moves can compare to the bicycle kick. It doesn’t happen often. So it’s not often that you’re able to witness one.

Given how special bicycle kicks are, it should come as no surprise that there’s some argument about exactly who invented the bicycle kick. Some soccer historians claim Ramon Unzaga invented the bicycle kick in 1914 in Talcahuano, Chile. Others believe the bicycle kick may have been invented as early as 1892 in Callao, Peru, in a game against British sailors. Even legendary   Brazilian striker Leonidas claims to have invented the move in 1932.

Regardless of who invented the bicycle kick, it has been-a special part of soccer for a century now. Only goalkeepers with very exceptional reflexes (反应) might be able to react quickly enough to block a shot from a bicycle kick. Why?Scientists claim it’s because of the physics involved in a bicycle kick. Since the player’s body is high above the ground and angled upward, the kicking leg has a greater distance than normal to travel before hitting the ball. The result: a forceful kick that sends the ball toward the goal more quickly than normal.

If you’re a soccer player, you’ve probably tried a bicycle kick a time or two. It’s not easy. But you’ll be able to see the basics broken down into steps by jumping online to check out how to do a bicycle kick.

【推荐3】When special occasions such as birthdays or other big holiday events come around, parents often look for that special toy for their children. But there is a growing understanding that gifts of time and bonding, such as vacations and other experiences, make better and more lasting gifts for children.

Experts agree that gifting children with memorable trips and fun experiences is better for their body and mind, and has corresponding positive impacts on the rest of the family!

In a 2017 study that surveyed about 500 women between 18 and 93 years old, Dr. Oravecz, a human development and family studies professor at Pennsylvania State University, asked, “Most people feel loved when...” The study showed that the most popular answers had nothing to do with any material item. Dr. Oravecz said, “Our research found that micro-moments of positivity, like a kind word, a hug with a child or a sympathetic expression, make people feel most loved.”

Clinical psychologist Oliver James agrees. He stated that as opposed to toys, details from a trip are more likely to “stick with them for long after the vacation ends.” When families interact in a stress-free environment, this creates warm, generous feelings towards one another, which are likely to be remembered with fondness. Vacations create strong emotional responses that don’t often come with material possessions.

In addition, British child psychologist Dr. Margot Sunderland believes that vacations make children smarter. “What is less widely known is that vacations can also advance brain development in children. This is because on a family vacation, you are exercising two genetically ingrained systems deep in the brain’s limbic (边缘的) area, which can all too easily be ‘unexercised’ in the home.” Citing the work of neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp, Dr. Sunderland said, “These are the PLAY system and the SEEKING system.” “The brain’s PLAY system is exercised every time you bury your child’s feet in the sand or take them for a ride on your back. The SEEKING system is exercised each time you go exploring together: the beach, a cave, a hidden village...” She continued, “So when you take your child on a vacation, you are supporting their explorative urge (SEEKING system)—a vital resource for living life well, and their capacity to play (PLAY system). In adulthood, this translates into the ability to play with ideas—essential, for example, to the successful entrepreneur(企业家).”

In a busy household, perhaps the fun of having the latest toy may not last, but the space it occupies in the house could be there and gather dust. So for the next round of gift-giving with the children, consider an experiential gift instead. The return is definitely priceless.

1. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.The capacity to play can translate into the ability to seek.
B.The SEEKING system can develop when adventuring in the wild.
C.PLAY and SEEKING systems are more easily exercised at home.
D.Burying your child’s feet in the mud is exercising the SEEKING system.
2. According to the passage, the author may agree that ________.
A.material gifts are better for a child’s body and mind
B.children spending vacations with their parents are more generous
C.trips with family can form better emotional interactions than material gifts
D.vacations with employees are a waste of time for a successful entrepreneur
