【推荐3】What if we could study people from the time that they were teenagers all the way in to old age to see what really keeps people _______ and fit?

Luckily for us, for many years now, we’ve conducted a study to answer this very question. The Harvard Study of Adult Development may be the longest study of adult life that has ever been done. For nearly 80 years, we’ve _______the lives of 724 men, asking about their work, their home life and their health. About 60 of our _______ are still participating in the study, most of whom are now in their 90s.

And I’m the fourth director of the study. So what have we learned from the tens of thousands of pages of information that we’ve _______ on these lives? Well, the lessons aren’t about _______ or fame or hard work. The clearest message that we have gotten from this study is this: Good relationships keep us happier and healthier.

We’ve learned three big lessons about relationships. Firstly, social connections are really good for us, and _______kills. People who are more closely connected to their family, friends and community are happier, physically healthier, and live longer lives than those who are less _______. The sad fact is that at any given time, more than one in five Americans will report that they’re lonely.

And we know that you can be lonely in a crowd, so the second big lesson is that it’s not just the number of friends you have, but it’s the _______ of your close relationships that matters. High-conflict marriages without much affection, _______ , prove to be very bad for our health, perhaps even worse than divorces.

________ protecting our bodies, good relationships help our memories stay sharper for a longer time. And those good relationships don’t have to be ________ all the time. Some couples could argue with each other day in and day out in their 80s, but as long as they felt that they could really ________ the other when the going got tough, those arguments wouldn’t end up doing harm to their memories.

So what about you? What might “leaning into relationships” even look like? Well, the ________ are practically endless. It might be something as simple as replacing screen time with people time, or ________ a stale (腻烦的) relationship by doing something new together, or reaching out to that family member to whom you haven’t spoken in years.

________ the good life is built with good relationships.
