We’ve all heard the stories of an actor’s struggles before a career breakthrough: living a hard life, working part time, being a couch potato before getting that major role. Shelby, the star of “A Dog’s Way Home,” has a hard-luck tale that could top them all. Before her big break, she was living in a landfill, rooting through garbage for her next meal.

Shelby’s big break came in April 2017, when animal-control officer Megan Buhler was driving in Cheatham County, Tennessee. Out on an unrelated call, Buhler spotted and approached what she recalled was a noticeably scared puppy emerging from the dump. “I knelt down and just said, ‘Oh, come here, baby,’” said Buhler. “She was so scared, but she came right up to me, and I was able to put her in my truck.” The pair headed to the county animal shelter, where the staff began calling the new resident Baby Girl.

Buhler and others didn’t know that 3,200 kilometers away, Hollywood was looking for a dog to play Bella in a film written by Cathryn Michon. The find-a-Bella job went to freelance trainer Teresa Ann Miler. Her mission was to search shelters nationwide for a dog that could play Bella. One day, Miller spotted Baby Girl’s adoption photo. “Honestly, it was a really good picture, and she was flat-out smiling,” Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her on personality and the ability to respond to simple commands. After assessment, she adopted Baby Girl from the shelter, renamed her Shelby and took her to California for training. Miller and Shelby trained for just over three months before filming began. Then they were together each day on the set.

Most of the film’s reviews have praised Shelby’s performance. Variety made the comments “an amazing dog, perfect performance!”

Shelby has come a long way from the dump. But Buhler said she saw Shelby recently had needed only a second to compare the movie star with the dog she found from piles of trash. “She’s exactly the same,” Buhler said.

1. Why does the author mention an actor’s struggle before a career breakthrough at the very beginning?
A.To introduce a dog’s similar but even more striking experiences.
B.To make a sharp contrast between an actor’s struggle and a dog’s struggle.
C.To clearly point out the main idea of the passage.
D.To attract reader’s attention by giving dramatic examples.
2. What finally helped Baby Girl get the big role in the film?
A.Her flat-out smiling.B.Her miserable experiences.
C.Her adoption picture.D.Her personality and ability.
3. By saying “She is exactly the same” in the last paragraph, Buhler probably means ________.
A.the dog returned to the piles of trash where she found it
B.the dramatic change of the dog’s life hasn’t changed her inner quality
C.the dog looked exactly the same as before
D.the dog’s really excited to see the dog she helped live such a happy life
4. What do you think may serve as the best title of the passage?
A.From a Landfill Puppy to a Movie Star.
B.The Success of “A Dog’s Way Home”.
C.The Trainer and Her Star Dog.
D.Shelby’s Hard-luck Story.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了地松鼠冬眠时的生存模式可以给予旅居太空的宇航员的生存启示。

【推荐1】What would you say if you had to eat no food for a whole season? It sounds like a conundrum for humans, but ground squirrels, a common species from North America, however, achieve this very easily every winter. A new discovery has revealed why, and the finding can really help astronauts with their physical health during long missions.

Long periods of inactivity are known to lead to muscle wastage in most animal species. But for hibernating (冬眠) animals, things happen in a different way. Not only can they survive without eating, but they also use minimal levels of energy while preserving their muscle mass and function during and after the whole winter.

It was Matthew Regan, an animal physiologist from the University of Montreal, who discovered why. In his research published in Science, he confirms a theory from the 1980s called “urea nitrogen salvage” (尿素氮回收) through the study of ground squirrels.

According to the theory, the gut microbes (肠道细菌) from these cute hibernators can recycle the nitrogen inure a and reuse it to build new proteins. In short, they can take advantage of waste, and turn it into something vital.

“Urea nitrogen salvage may help with the hibernating squirrels’ muscle function and contribute to their reproductive success during the mating season,” Regan said. “This way, when squirrels recover from hibernation, they are in good shape to deal with the intense physical activity that a successful reproduction demands.”

Regan’s findings could have a meaningful impact on the future of space travel. According to the researcher, if astronauts manage to copy the salvaging of urea nitrogen, they will be able to prevent muscle loss, a common issue among space travelers.

“Because we know which muscle proteins are prevented during spaceflight, we can compare these proteins with those that are enhanced by urea nitrogen salvage during hibernation,” Regan said. The researcher continued, “If there are the same parts between the proteins in spaceflight and the ones from hibernation, then it suggests astronauts can gain health benefits by learning this process.”

1. What does the word “conundrum” underlined in the first paragraph probably mean?
A.Difficult problem.B.Funny fact.C.Daily routine.D.Simple task.
2. Which paragraph tells the benefits of urea nitrogen salvage for ground squirrels?

3. Regan’s findings may help astronauts deal with____.
A.eating disordersB.muscle loss
C.sleeping issuesD.protein identification
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.How Do Hibernators Survive in Cold Winter?
B.Why Are Astronauts Faced With Muscle Loss?
C.What Can Ground Squirrels Teach Astronauts?
D.Can Humans Survive Without Eating in Space?

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了第一只进入太空的猫Félicette是如何被选中进入太空,以及人们为了让她的牺牲得到认可所付出的努力。

【推荐2】In the 1950s and 60s, scientists around the world launched many creatures into space. The idea was to calculate the effects of spaceflight on living creatures in the hopes that humans could follow.

The Soviet Union sent a stray Moscow dog named Laika into space, and subsequently, it was honored as a national hero. Ham the chimpanzee was famously buried at the International Space Hall of Fame in New Mexico following his contributions to the U. S. space program. And then there was France, which sent the first and so far only cat into space. So, who was this hero cat, anyway?

Félicette was one of 14 cats cited to the French space program. Each cat had electrodes implanted into their brain, and all were subjected to many of the same activities included in human astronaut training. French scientists decided to use cats as they already had a lot of neurological data on them. At the conclusion of training, the petite tuxedo Félicette got the green light.

On Oct. 18, 1963, Félicette, was strapped into a Véronique rocket and blasted from Algeria to nearly 100 miles above Earth. She experienced about five minutes of weightlessness followed by the terror of a turbulent, spinning descent via parachute.

Just 15 minutes later, the flight was complete. A helicopter crew dashed to the landing site, threw open the cabin, and found Félicette alive and well.

Two months later, scientists rewarded her heroism with euthanasia (安乐死) — they wanted to examine her body. Then, Félicette was all but forgotten.

So forgotten that in the 90s, when three former French colonies celebrated her story by issuing stamps with the cat’s likeness, they mistakenly turned her into a boy by using the wrong name — Felix.

But thanks to Londoner Matt Guy who came across the tale of Félicette that she wasn’t already properly recognized for her accomplishments, the story’s finally been set straight. His online pleas netted around $57,000 enough to fund a 5-foot tall bronze statue. On Dec. 18, 2019, the statue was finally unveiled at the International Space University in Strasbourg, France.

1. Why did scientists choose Félicette for their space program?
A.Because cats were more readily available than other animals.
B.Because cats had well-developed neurological system.
C.Because they liked her more than Laika and Ham.
D.Because they got rich research data about cats.
2. What happened to Félicette after her space mission?
A.She became a national hero in France.
B.She was euthanized for scientific examination.
C.She was adopted by one of the scientists involved in the program.
D.She was remembered until a Londoner rediscovered her story.
3. What did Matt Guy do for Félicette?
A.He helped issue stamps with the cat’s likeness.B.He built a status for Félicette by himself.
C.He raised money online in Félicette’s honor.D.He discovered Félicette initiatively.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.Félicette the first cat in Space finally got her due.B.Félicette was forgotten in the history.
C.The first and only cat Félicette was sent into space.D.Félicette was rescued bravely by humans.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章向我们介绍了几条建议——如何选择适合你的宠物。

【推荐3】Owning a pet is a fun and rewarding experience. But every animal and their needs are different, so how can you make sure that you choose the right one for you? Here are some tips.

·Do your research.

1     Every pet has its own personality and certain breeds (种类) of animals often have strong characters, so think carefully about what you want from your pet and do some research before you take one on.

·Think about your lifestyle.

For example, if you want to own a cat, will they have access to outside space while you’re out during the day?     2     Do some research on the size, temperament, and exercise requirements of different pets to make sure that they are the right choice for you.

·Do your sums.

From everyday things like insurance, food and toys to unexpected vet bills, having a pet is certainly a financial commitment.     3

·Think about a rescue pet.

4     Charities like Blue Cross (畜类保护协会) can offer support and advice about individual pets and help you find the right one for you. They will be vaccinated (打疫苗) so they offer great value compared to the cost involved in buying from a dog seller.

·Find a reliable breeder(培育者).

If you do want to buy a dog or cat, ask your local vet (兽医) or breed club to recommend a responsible breeder. Ask the breeder for all the relevant paperwork and see the pet’s parents, relatives, brothers and sisters to observe their nature and general health and welfare.

5     Because these may well turn out to be puppy farmers or commercial dealers who have little interest in the welfare of the pets they sell.

A.Owning a pet gives you a sense of responsibility.
B.Don’t purchase animals online or from dealers.
C.Thousands of homeless pets are desperate for a good home.
D.If you work full time and want a dog, who will walk them during the day?
E.Long hours at work and small flats mean it's just not practical for you to own a pet.
F.You may like the look of a particular pet, but that doesn’t mean they’re right for you.
G.Make sure that you calculate how much your new pet will cost before you choose them.
