Global Natural History Day (GNHD)—youth science knowledge competition—-took place in Shanghai in March, 2023, in an effort to provide a platform     1     school students to learn more about natural science.

GNHD     2    (start) by Kenneth Behring in 2012 in China. It is an international education program intended     3    (inspire) students’ interest in natural history and science and engage them to get outdoors and explore their environment. It is based in Shanghai,     4     world-famous economic and financial center.     5    (support) by local museums and natural science organizations, these science knowledge competitions have been continuously held for 12 years, attracting 60, 000 teams     6     involving millions of students and teachers. In this program, students will develop problem-solving abilities, and     7    (deep) cross-cultural understanding. More importantly, they also explore     8     the future state of the natural world will be like.

In the past decade, GNHD     9    (add) popular science painting, story broadcasting and science exhibition to further arouse students’ interest in natural science learning. Under 2023’s main theme “Seeing small things——Nature’s small perspective and big vision”, natural science     10    (talent) from around the world presented their achievements in exhibitions, science paintings and storytelling.

Kilns (窑) had to burn day and night in Jingdezhen, a city in Jiangxi province of southeastern China,     1     (meet) demand from around the globe.

Today, though demand is much     2     (low), people are making porcelain the same way they have for hundreds of years, with Jingdezhen’s old masters still     3     (pray) to the kiln gods.

Meanwhile, across town, creative new craftspeople are bringing new     4     (idea) into the art and new life to the once factories and villages. It’s fair to say that Jingdezhen people live and     5     (breath) porcelain, but they aren’t doing it alone.

“Jingdezhen is more than a historical town. The old and new are combined perfectly here.” Says Hu Chunxiao, a local artist     6     family has worked in the industry for generations. The traditional and modern exist in harmony, which makes     7     one of the most interesting towns in China for travel.

Despite being a center of porcelain for 1,700 years, Jingdezhen is never short     8     great natural scenes. The surrounding area is famous for abundant     9     (hide) landscape — mountains, streams, farms and forests. Artists who desire a peaceful life     10     (draw) here since the ancient times.

For a company like Huawei, this was     4     major shock and could pose a persistent problem that needed immediate attention. Therefore, it was crucial for Huawei to have its own core technology, especially     5     it came to chips. Developing chips is a lengthy, demanding, and labor-intensive (劳动密集型) process, but     6     didn’t defeat Huawei. Instead of purchasing or leasing     7     (produce) from other countries, Huawei decided to invest heavily in research and development.

Huawei’s difficulties are similar to those faced by modern China in its early days. During that time, China lacked advanced technology. Despite this, China managed     8     (develop)its own atomic bombs , aircraft carriers, satellites, and fighter jets starting from zero. These advancements guide the country to prosperity and power.     9     a determined attitude and united team. Not only has the Internet made our lives more convenient,     1     also people’s lives have been changed by online communities and social networks. Take Jan Tchamant,     2     English teacher, for example. At age 50, because     3     a serious illness, she had to quit her job. With only her computer to keep her company, she felt lonely and     4     (bore). However, by     5     (surf) the Internet, she realized that the Internet had many great     6     (benefit). At the same time,     7     (inspire) by the people she met online, she decided to start an IT club to teach older people how     8     (use) computers and the Internet.
