Until now the usual way we identify dogs is with micro-chipping. In some countries it’s even the law. But a company from South Korea has developed an app that can identify dogs a little less invasively. On this phone, I’ve got the new app, PetNow, which is now using the dog’s nose print to identify a dog, just like you can use a fingerprint with a human to make identification. A dog’s nose print is very similar as well.

“Now show me your nose, buddy.” It takes me a few seconds to take pictures of the dog’s nose. “Oh yes, I made it, okay! Then who is the dog? Is it Emma, Lenard, Karl, or Ethan?”

The app analyses the data in the cloud and tells me that this is Emma, and not only that, it’s showing me that Emma’s been reported as missing. And it’s telling me where she was reported missing, and I can share my location with the owner, so they can be reunited.

Unlike a micro-chip, which could be cut out of a stolen dog, you can’t really remove a dog’s nose, not without spoiling the dog. And by using the phone’s camera to scan, anyone in theory can check a stray dog without any specialist equipment.

Recently, I’ve spoken to PetNow to find out why they’d settled on nose prints for dog recognition. There may be paws or ears, but some dogs really hate showing up, sharing their paws or their ears. Nose is actually exposed all the time. And after a dog become six months old the nose print stays there their entire life, so we believe that it is the best part for identification.

PetNow hopes its app will become mandatory in South Korea to help reduce the number of dogs that are abandoned by pet owners. To do that they will need the backing of government and a huge marketing push, so that everybody including people who don’t own a dog must install the app and know how to use it.

A.Because a micro-chip can be cut out.
B.Because some dogs hate showing up.
C.Because their nose print never changes.
D.Because their nose is easy to be photographed.
3. Which of the word best explains the underlined word “mandatory” in the last paragraph?
A.safe.B.required.C.professional.D.easy.
4. What’s the best title of the passage?
A.Taking Pictures for Dog’s Nose.B.Nose Print Technology on the Way.
C.PetNow Saves Abandoned Dogs.D.PetNow Identifies Dogs with Nose Print.

2】“Creativity is the key to a brighter future,” say education and business experts. Here is how schools and parents can encourage this important skill in children.

If Dick Drew had listened to his boss in 1925 , we might not have the product that we now think of as great importance: a new type of tape. Drew worked for the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company. At work he developed a kind of material strong enough to hold things together. But his boss told him not to think more about the idea. Finally, using his own time, Drew improved the tape, which now is used everywhere by many people. And his former company learned from its mistake. Now it encourages people to spend 15 percent of their working time just thinking about and developing new ideas.

Creativity is not something one is just born with, nor is it necessarily a character of high intelligence. The fact that a person is highly intelligent does not mean that he uses it creatively. Creativity is the matter of using the resources one has to produce new ideas that are good for something.

Unfortunately, schools have not tried to encourage creativity. With strong attention to test results and the development of reading, writing and mathematical skills, many educators give up creativity for correct answers. The result is that children can gain information but can’t recognize ways to use it in new situations. They may know the rules correctly but they are unable to use them to work out practical problems.

It is important to give children choices. From the earliest age, children should be allowed to make decisions and understand their results. Even if it’s choosing between two food items for lunch, decisionmaking helps thinking skills. As children grow older, parents should try to let them decide how to use their time or spend their money. This is because the most important character of creative people is a very strong desire to find a way out of trouble.

1. We can know from the passage that creativity is ______.
A.something that most people are born with
B.something that has nothing to do with intelligence at all
C.a way of using what one has learned to work out new problems
D.something that is not important to the life in the future at all
2. Why don’t schools try to encourage creativity?
A.They don't think creativity education is important.
B.They don't want their students to make mistakes.
C.They pay no attention to examination marks.
D.They think it impossible to develop creativity in class.
3. What should parents do when their children decide how to spend their money?
A.Allow them to have a try.
B.Try to help them as much as possible.
C.Take no notice of whatever they do.
D.Order them to spend the least money.
4. What did the company where Drew once worked learn from its mistake?
A.It should encourage people to work a longer time.
B.People should be discouraged to think freely.
C.People will do better if they spend most of their working time developing new ideas.
D.It is necessary for people to spend some of their working time considering and developing new ideas.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了我国发明的一种由3D打印技术制作的新型布料“相变布”。

【推荐3】Imagine if the same jacket that warms you up on cold days would also cool you down on hot ones. Fabrics with “phase-change properties” (相变性) can do that. And a research team from China now shows that 3-D printing techniques can produce a strong phase-change cloth.

This new fabric not only helps regulate temperatures, but also conducts electricity. It even resists the radio waves used in Wi-Fi. “The combination of those properties is very amazing,” says Sergio Granados-Focil. He did not take part in the cloth’s development. But this polymer (聚合物) chemist at Clark University in Worcester, Mass., is familiar with phase-change materials.

Water goes through a phase-change cloth when it freezes or evaporates (蒸发). The removal or addition of heat causes the change between phases. Imagine ice cubes melting into a glass of water. The ice absorbs the water’s heat. That warms up the ice, but cools down the water. Phase-change cloth also works by moving heat around. The Chinese team trapped a phase-changing polymer inside the fabric. It changes between a crystal (晶体) and a non-crystal form. Becoming a crystal absorbs or removes body heat. That will cool you down. But this heat isn’t gone. The fabric stores it. And the polymer will release that heat when it changes back into a non-crystal. This now warms you up.

“The new fabric contains a novel mix of materials. In developing it,” says Yongyi Zhang, “For the first time we demonstrate a 3-D printing strategy and we believe the new cloth can be promising in the future.” Zhang studies nanotechnology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Suzhou.

3. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.What a crystal consists of.B.How the phase-change cloth works.
C.Why the Chinese team did the research.D.Where the phase-changing polymer is from.
4. What can we learn from Yongyi Zhang’s words?
A.The Chinese researchers are confident.B.The future of the new cloth is doubtful.
C.The 3-D printing strategy is disapproving,D.Reading novels helps to invent new materials.
