It won’t sound like a big surprise when I tell you that kindness plays an important role in a person’s wellbeing. It can lead to changes like higher self-esteem(自尊心) and lower blood pressure. Even just witnessing acts of kindness can make us happier.

1     “From giving away a cup of hot chocolate in a park to giving away a gift in the lab, those performing an act of kindness consistently underestimated how positive their receivers would feel, thinking their act was of less value than receivers perceived it to be,” states a study.

2     Yet, why is there this difference between what we think someone will feel from an act of kindness versus what they do feel? Why do we underestimate the impact we have on others?

Many of us don’t have a real sense of our value. It’s been estimated that as many as 85 percent of people struggle with low self-esteem.     3     This “voice” tends to shift our focus inward assessing our every move, and having bad effect on our relationships.

Unlike a conscience(良心), this inner critic doesn’t motivate positive behavior.     4     It encourages us to hold back feeding us thoughts like, “Don’t stick your neck out”: “No one wants to hear from you”; and “You’re going to make a fool of yourself.”

One wonderful way to fight against our critical inner voice is through acts of being kind to others.     5     We must also try to see ourselves through the eyes of the people we affect. The degree to which we’re able to do that will help determine our own happiness along with the happiness we light up in others.

A.However, the work doesn’t stop there.
B.People may lower the value of their own kind comments.
C.We all carry around a “critical inner voice” that tends to put us down.
D.Instead of seeing what we have to offer, we may think of ourselves as a burden.
E.This misunderstanding suggests that people devalue their own actions in relation to others.
F.Instead, it turns us against ourselves, making us underestimate our beneficial effect on others.
G.Yet, people may not truly know the impact that even the smallest of kind acts can have on another person.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一项新研究表明多吃农产品、少吃加工肉类的饮食,可能有助于预防抑郁症。

【推荐1】Following a diet rich in produce and low in processed meats even if you don’t do it perfectly may be helpful in preventing depression, according to a new study.

“To lower the risk of depression, people can eat everything, but everything in the right amount, as long as you try to eat lots of vegetables, fruits, nuts and fish, and lessen fast food and processed meats,” said Almudena Sanchez from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

At the start of the study, researchers asked 15,000 Spanish university graduates who had never had depression what they normally ate. Then they asked them again, 10 years later. The researchers looked at how closely the participants’ everyday diets stuck to three healthy diet patterns, in which they consumed high amounts of fruits, vegetables, legumes (豆类) , nuts and fish, and avoided processed meats. These principles are part of the Mediterranean diet and other healthy diets.

The researchers found that the people in the study who stuck to healthy patterns to a moderate or a high degree had a lower risk of depression than those who did not follow these diets at all, or who stuck to them to a low degree. For example, the risk of depression over the study period for the people who moderately stuck to the Mediterranean diet was about 25 to 30 percent lower than those who did not stick to the diet at all, or who stuck to it only to a very low degree.

The researchers don’t know for sure what may explain the link between these dietary patterns and people’s risk of depression. However, one potential mechanism(机制) is that people who follow these patterns may have a lower risk of depression because they get adequate levels of some micronutrients (微量营养元素) which are essential to brain health.

2. What was necessary for the graduates to participate in the study?
A.They were healthy enough.
B.They stuck to healthy lifestyle.
C.They had never experienced depression.
D.They tended to go on a healthy diet.
3. What is the benefit of the Mediterranean diet?
A.It is made up of foods with lower calories.
B.It prevents people from getting depression.

【推荐2】Polar bears normally need sea ice to hunt seals, but an isolated (孤立的) group of polar bears living on the mountainous coast of southeast Greenland have figured out how to make a living, even though the sea ice there melts away early in the year.

These bears have found a way to supplement (补充) their limited sea ice supply by hunting on freshwater ice that comes from glaciers on land. The glacial ice falls off in pieces into fjords (峡湾), where the pieces get together into a floating platform that the polar bears use to catch seals, according to a report in the journal Science.

Climate change is making sea ice less and less. “Loss of sea ice is the primary threat to polar bears,” says Kristin Laidre of the University of Washington, lead author of the new study. But, she says, this new work suggests some bears might be able to deal with a decreased amount of sea ice - at least for a while - in places like Greenland where they can take advantage of floating glacier ice.

While local people have long known that bears live in southeast Greenland, it’s a remote, challenging environment that’s not frequented by humans. “It’s a coastline with huge mountain peaks, lots of winds, extreme conditions and plenty of fogs.” says Laidre, who has spent years working with colleagues to survey polar bears living on Greenland’s 1,800-mile-long east coast.

To see what they could find in southeast Greenland, the team had to take helicopters from the nearest settlement and fly for two hours in a straight line to the coast. “We arrived in these fjords, very isolated fjords, and there’s essentially no sea ice or very poor sea ice offshore,” says Laidre, explaining that the researchers expected to find few bears. “But there were a lot of bears in these fjords,” she says. “It was clearly just a unique habitat.”

The sea ice continues to exist in these fjords for only around a hundred days a year, she notes, meaning that bears don’t have much time to use it as a hunting ground.

1. What will happen to pieces of glacial ice after falling off?
A.They will gather to block some fjords.
B.They will exist in fjords for only a hundred years.
C.They will float into cold places and never disappear.
D.They will form a platform used by polar bears for food.
2. What is putting polar bears at risk according to the new study?
A.Lack of food sources.B.Loss of freshwater ice.
C.Human activities in their habitats.D.Decrease of sea ice due to climate change.
3. What might be the best title for the text?

【推荐3】Corn is the most dominant agricultural product in the U.S., and perhaps the world.     1     But when their crops failed, the settlers of the New World decide to mix corn into their agricultural efforts. Fast-forward a couple of hundred years, and this tall grass now covers 90 million acres of land in America alone and accounts for some 10% of total crop production globally.

2     One is that growing corn generates far more calories per unit of land than nearly any other crop. Another key factor was that much more ammonium nitrate (硝酸铵), a kind of explosive, was left after World War Ⅱ. Agriculture scientists successfully repurposed it into a cheap form of fertilizer. This allowed corn to be grown in the same fields year after year, without reducing the nitrogen in the soil.     3     We can eat it, process it into syrup, fuel our cars with it and feed it to our animals.

The dominance of corn, however, has negative effect. Currently, we use approximately 40% of corn grown in the U.S. to create ethanol (乙醇) and 36% to feed animals.     4     Ethanol has a low “energy-returned-on-energy-invested” ratio (比率), meaning we must put a large amount of energy into producing it. An indirect negative effect of the dominance of corn has been its help in fueling explosive growth in the livestock industry.

5     Traditional monoculture farming, which means growing one type of crop continuously, worsens soil and often leads to harmful runoff into streams and rivers. Farmers themselves can change from monoculture practices to those that include a wider variety of species. As consumers, we can buy organic corn. Though not absolutely eco-friendly, organic agriculture is miles ahead of traditional farming.

A.Corn helped newcomers root in the new land.
B.Many reasons account for the dominance of corn.
C.Additionally, corn has incredibly many different uses.
D.Even just growing corn is far from environmentally friendly.
E.Unfortunately, both uses cause great damage to the environment.
F.These days about 80% of the world’s farmland is for animal production.
G.Originally grown in Central America, European explorers initially avoided it.
