Chloe was 83 years old and lived by the ocean shore in a big beautiful house. She wished her son Steve would visit her, even if for only a day. Of course, the young man had a family of his own now, a darling little daughter Eva, and a business to take care of. Steve got on video calls with Chloe every other day. However, Chloe thought of her son and granddaughter, wishing she was with them. One day, Chloe heard sounds from the neighboring house. Chloe looked through the window and was delighted to see that she had new neighbors.

One morning, when Chloe woke up and walked along the shore, she heard the sounds of water being splashed and the sound of children laughing wildly. She followed the sound and was concerned on finding the twins from the neighboring house standing knee deep in ocean water. Something didn’t feel right. “Why would anyone leave their kids unattended on the shore?” Chloe thought. She grabbed the kids’ hands and walked them to their home. As Chloe opened the door, she found the young mother lying unconscious on the kitchen floor. Chloe didn’t waste a second in calling 911.

The first responders managed to revive (恢复) her consciousness on the spot. “My boys! Ralph! Ray!” the woman cried out to her kids as the ambulance took her away. Chloe said, “Don’t worry. Everything will be alright. I’ll take care of your sweet boys.” She kept her promise and looked after the kids like a grandmother. She took Ralph and Ray in and let them sleep in the bedroom that was specially made for her granddaughter Eva.

It was during these days that she knew that the boys’ father died of illness. Chloe knew that the neighbor, Phoebe, had been trying to make ends meet by selling sweaters and socks that she knit. Looking at Phoebe’s children eat and drink with such joy, she realized how much she longed to see her little Eva. By the time Phoebe came home from the hospital, the kids had already started calling Chloe “Grandma”.

Bessie Curtis was spending a year in the countryside with her uncle and aunt. Early in the spring her uncle had given her a young turkey (火鸡) “There. Bessie.” he said, “that is one of the prettiest turkeys I have ever seen. I will give him into your care, and on Thanksgiving Day we will have the turkey on the dinner-table.”

For some time Bessie fed the turkey every day without feeling particularly fond of him, Very Soon, however, the turkey began to know her: he not only ran to meet her when she brought him his corn (谷物) and meal, but he would follow her about just the way Mary’s little dog did. Her uncle often called after her : “Everywhere Bessie goes, the turkey’s sure to follow as a knight (骑士).” But she was so sad! She remembered her uncle’s words when he gave her the turkey: “On Thanksgiving Day we will have the turkey on the table.”

If Bessie had been like some little girls, she would have told her trouble to her uncle. But she never mentioned it to anyone, although she cried herself to sleep several nights before Thanksgiving Day.

At last the day and the dinner-time came! With a heavy heart, she seated herself at the table. Her uncle and aunt noticed her serious face, and thought that she missed her father and mother. “Come, come,” said her uncle, “we must cheer up; no sad looks on Thanksgiving Day. Maria, BRING IN THE TURKEY.”

On Saturday, Mum went to visit her friends in the city. Ollie, Dad and I went to do the shopping. The car park at the supermarket was very full; there was even a line for the barbecue out the front. Ollie and I complained-we guessed it would be really busy inside. This was not our idea of a fun way to spend the weekend. Dad promised us a hot dog on the way back if we helped him.

Seeing it was packed like sardines in a tin, Dad shook his head at the crowds when we got inside.

The whole town must have picked that morning to do their shopping. Every checkout was full of trolleys. Traffic jams were everywhere, and you could see the supermarket staff busy, running around. Bells sounded. Babies cried. People shouted. This was going to be hard work.

Dad told us we would need to do this smartly if we wanted to get out alive. We needed to work together. Ollie pushed the trolley; I checked the list; Dad would do the running and grabbing. He nodded at us and I knew the battle had started.

Ollie ran off ahead with the noisy trolley and headed for the fruit and vegetables. I chased after him with the list. After crazy panic buying, we were at the checkout, remarking how delicious this food would be when cooked into a roast dinner.

So far, so good. We might have been stuck behind a family with a cart filled to the top, a man with a lot of frozen dinners, and an old couple who moved slowly, but at least we'd made it. Dad picked up a magazine to read while waiting.

We finally got to the front. Dad stood in line, and we went to buy our hot dogs. Satisfied, we went home. But it was when we got the shopping bags into the house that I noticed that something was wrong: one of the bags was not ours. It would be impossible to go back to find our original bag.

Bobby, my brother, and I would spend our usual Saturday with Grandpa, cleaning his house. Mom would take us to his home in the early morning. Since childhood, Bobby and I   had been spending the day dusting, mopping and changing the sheets on his bed.

Grandpa grew up in a poor family. His dad died when he was a teenager. Then he had tol eave school, run the family farm and raise his brother and sister. He worked as a nightdoor keeper for a company within walking distance of his home, and the highlight of his week was the reward that he gave my brother and me for cleaning. And it was the moment when we felt the happiest.

This Saturday, after Bobby and I finished cleaning, Grandpa decided to invite us to dinner. When we finally arrived at his favorite restaurant, the waitresses greeted him as along-lost elder. Their smiles and waves followed us to our favorite table as we placed our orders. And then we laughed and ate. Grandpa praised how well we had cleaned his place, telling anyone who would like to listen about every task we had accomplished.

Regardless of who was serving us at the time, each of the other waitresses would come up to say “hi” to Grandpa and congratulate his grandkids on their work. It was a restaurant, but it was like our home. When dinner was over, the waitress would bring the check and hand it to Grandpa. This time, it was Gloria that bent close to him, and told him the amount of the check.

Grandpa carefully dug into the pocket of his trousers and brought out a worn coin purse. He carefully laid out the coins and paid the bill. Then he gave Gloria a tip, but it wasn’t enough. I was ashamed that he got the amount of the tip wrong, and we were embarrassed. I was about to say something when Gloria grabbed my hands. “Come and get some flowers, today’s gifts, Susie,” she said as she led me toward the counter.
