We all put our hands in the middle, ready for the “TIGERS!” shout. Andrew looked up, his face wrinkled in confusion, and then loosed in relief he said, “Whoa, for a second I forgot there was a girl on this team. I was wondering why there was one hand with painted pink nails!” The guys laughed, and I smiled, once again reminded how cool it was that I was different. “1, 2, 3, TIGERS!” and we were off to the field.

My adventures as the only girl on my all-boys middle school football team were always interesting. Football is known as being predominantly male. But I love football. Ever since I could walk, I would get around the fields. My dad is a huge football fan, and we spend many Saturday afternoons playing football in the yard or watching games. Football is in my blood. So when signups came for the 7th- and 8th-grade team, I signed up. Who says a girl can’t do it?

Back to Grade 7. Though it was strange for the guys to have me there, and a few felt embarrassed when they heard they’d be tackling a girl, they got used to it. The coach treated me like anyone else, and the boys learned to also. I did the drills, I tackled people, and I got tackled. By the time I got home every night, my body literally crumbled into my bed. But it was all worth it. Game days were everyone’s favorite. Football is a team sport of passion, pride and love. The coach would always tell us, “We win as a team: we lose as a team!”

To play well we needed to work as a team. Different as I was being the only girl, it didn’t matter. One person, one girl, is not a big thing. I was a part of the team. The coach got us all together, and we’d once again shout “TIGERS!”

【推荐1】A gymnastics balance beam (平衡木) is just 4 inches wide, but whether it sits an inch off the floor or the standard 4 feet, the challenge it causes for excellent gymnasts is the same.

That’s how gymnast Morgan Hurd explains it. “Beam is one of those things that are more mental than anything,” she said. “If you can do it on the floor, you can do it on the beam.” That’s the way she is taking as she trains for the delayed Tokyo Olympic Games in the living room of her Delaware home.

First State Gymnastics has been her training site since fifth grade but it is closed because of the coronavirus ( 新冠病毒) pandemic. Hurd has only one piece of gymnastics equipment: a balance beam that is quite close the ground and is roughly half the standard length of 16 feet, 5 inches. But she has no uneven bars (高低杠) in her house. “The hardest thing will be bars just because that feeling can not be replaced, no matter what you do or how strong you are,” Hurd said.

These days, Hurd’s self-directed training includes two workouts daily, three hours in the morning and another two hours in the afternoon, six days a week. She regularly talks to Slava Glazounov, who has been her coach since fifth grade. Hurd is in charge of her practising, such as the stretches and exercises that keep up her strength.

Equally important to Hurd is staying in touch with her teammates on the U.S. national team.

Sunisa Lee is a close friend, who, in April, shared a video of herself in her yard.

3】Hangzhou Asian Games are defined as a great success. For 16 days over 12,000 athletes from 45 countries and regions across Asia competed over 480 events, broke 13 world records and shared unforgettable moments in Hangzhou. It is worth mentioning that in this 19th edition of Asian Games break-dancing and e-sports made their debuts as official medal sports.

In Asia, e-sport games are more popular than traditional sport, making it the leading region for e-sports and, within Asia, China is undoubtedly the region leader as well as the largest e-sports market in the world, accounting for “34% of global industry income in that category, Asia combined takes 53%”, says Niko Partners in their market research reported by MIT Technology Review.

Within China, e-sports are run like any popular sport and have been for a long time: there are regional clubs, each with its home stadium; competitions featuring different levels of talent make it possible for the industry to evaluate the players (and also for the players to make a living); and in recent years, star players have even been marketed like celebrities, attracting crazy fan groups.

For the first time in history, the Asian Games included e-sports as medal-earning event, with over 20 countries competing in seven e-sport games making it the “highest-stakes mobile game match that’s ever been played” according to MIT Technology Review: “Of all the competitions taking place, e-sports is the only one in which arena(竞技场) tickets were sold on a lottery(抽签) basis because of skyrocketing demand. There were over 5 million lottery buyers for all the e-sports events; each had a 0.5% chance of getting a ticket.”

The reason for such popularity has been identified in the drive of the major Chinese tech companies promoting the rise of mobile gaming in China and making the e-sports more accessible to people who don’t have computers or consoles(游戏机). The popularity of e-sports is particularly intense among young people, for this reason brands like Disney or Nintendo are recruiting companies like Tencent to make their mobile games.
