Making choices is hard. That would be why researcher Moran Cerf has eliminated it from his life. As a rule, he always chooses the second menu item at a restaurant.

This is informed by his research in neuroeconomics (a somewhat new, divisive field) at Northwestem University.     1     Business Insider describes, Cerf has extended his ideas—which draw on some controversial ideas in psychology, including ego depletion out-into a piece of advice that,     2     (maximize) happiness, people should “build a life that requires fewer decisions by surrounding themselves with people who possess traits they prefer”.

On an instinctive level, Cerf’s idea makes sense: Many choices people make are the product of social pressures and the inputs of     3     (trust) people around them. One example Cerf furnishes is that, in addition to consistently ordering the second menu item, he never picks where to eat. Rather, he limits his decision to his dining partner-which friend he plans to eat with, probably     4     he trusts—and always lets him or her pick.

5     it’s unclear what scientific principles underlie those pieces of advice, there is no shortage of research showing that choices can sometimes feel more confusing than liberating. An example from Quanta poits (假设): If you have a clear love of Snickers, choosing that over an Almond Joy or a Milky Way     6     be a no-brainer. And, as an experiment conducted by neuroscientist Paul Glimcher at NYU shows, most of the time it is,     7     you introduce more choices. When the participants were offered three candy bars (Snickers, Milky Way, and Almond Joy) they had no problem     8     (pick) their favorite, but when they were given the option of one among 20, including Snickers, they would sometimes drift away from their preference.

According to a study done by the University of Florida,     1     students read affects the level of writing they achieve. In the study, researchers surveyed students about their reading materials, and they also took a writing sample from their cover letters. Upon analyzing their     2     (finding), researchers concluded that students who read academic journals and literary fiction scored     3     (high) in measures of writing complexity than     4     who primarily read popular fiction or web content     5     (publish) on sites. Although the study didn’t investigate why a link between reading material and writing ability exists, the authors suggest our writing may     6     (simple) mimic (模仿) what we read.

7    , Andrew Jarosz, a psychology professor at Mississippi State University, says this study had a relatively small sample size and that it’s too soon to conclude that the complexity of the material we read affects the complexity of our writing.

“It could indeed be that reading complex materials     8     (lead) to more complex writing,” he said. “Alternatively, what if people who are better writers prefer to read complex materials that mirror their own writing abilities? That is, it is entirely possible that the relationship goes     9     the other direction.”

Jarosz says other variables (可变因素),     10     (include) intelligence and the ability to store and process information at the same time, may also be responsible for why some people write at a higher level than others.

A professor of public health at UCLA says that pet ownership might provide a new form of health care. As far back as the1790s, the elderly at a senior citizens’ home in England     1     (encourage) to spend time with farm animals. This would help patients’ mental state more than the cruel therapies     2     (use) on the mentally ill at the time. In recent years, scientists have finally begun to find proof     3     contact with animals can increase a sick person’s chance of survival and has been shown     4    (lower) heart rate, calm upset children, and get people to start a conversation.

Scientists think that animal companionship is beneficial     5    animals are accepting and attentive, and they don’t criticize or give orders. Animals have the unique ability to be more social. For example, visitors to nursing homes get more social responses from patients when they come with animal companions.

Not only do people seem     6     (anxious) when animals are nearby, but they may also live longer. Studies show that a year     7     heart surgery, survival rates for heart patients were higher for those with pets in their homes than those without pets. Elderly people with pets make fewer trips to doctors than those without animal companions, possibly because animals relieve loneliness. Staying with animals is believed to create a peaceful state of mind,     8    (result) in a favourable environment for everyone.

Research confirms that the findings concerning senior citizens can be applied to restless children. They are more easy-going when there are animals around, with     9     company they tend to calm down more easily. They involve     10     in playing with animals and the presence of animals comforts them greatly.

Kellogg recalls Honey smacks amid Salmonella outbreak

Federal health officials are warning consumers to stay away from all Honey smacks cereal,     1     is likely behind a multi-state salmonella (沙门氏菌) outbreak that has sickened 130 people.

Kellogg's voluntarily recalled Honey smacks in June, citing possible salmonella contamination. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Tuesday that at least 30 people from 19 states have become ill since mid-July,     2     (suggest) that contaminated products may still be in people's homes or on store shelves.

“Do not eat any Kellogg's Honey smacks cereal,     3    . The package size or best-by date,” the CDC warned consumers. “Check your home for it and throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.”

The CDC also urged retailers     4     (not sell) any Honey smacks, since it's possible that taunted products are still in circulation. It appears, however,     5     most of the new illnesses occurred in people who ate cereal they     6     (purchase) before, the CDC says. Both the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration continue to investigate the outbreak.

“We ceased production of Honey smacks cereal in June     7     we learned of the possible connection to the Salmonella outbreak and have not yet shipped any new cereal to retailers,” a representative from Kellogg Company said. “Kellogg is asking that people who purchased potentially     8     (affect) product discard it and contact the company for a full refund.”

People who consume food taunted by salmonella bacteria     9     develop symptoms inducing diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after exposure, according to the CDC. Most people recover on     10     own within a week, but complications can develop if the infect ion spreads from the intestine to the blood stream.
