The sun shone high in the bright, blue sky. All the students were talking in the playground in excitement. They had been told that the next day they would have a test on good manners(礼貌).
The children had thought that hygiene(卫生)was an important part of the test. One child added that they should also remember to say “please” and “thank you.” The next day all the children appeared in their best clothes. The playground was very bright that day; a contrast (对比)that was provided with the usual black and white uniform of the school.
All the children made a line and began to go inside the building. As they went, an old washerwoman(洗衣女工)who worked at the school appeared. She had white hair and carried an extremely heavy bag of clothes on her back. As the students passed, she asked for help. Some of them did not reply at all and some of them replied, “Sorry but we have a very important test and we cannot be late.”
None helped until the washerwoman asked the last student going inside, Maria. Maria replied, “Of course, I’ll help you.”
Maria took the burden(重担)off the old washerwoman's back and put it onto her shoulders. She then followed the old lady to her workplace.
The path was not a smooth one. Maria accidentally(不小心) fell down and her dress became dirty. Maria was sure she would fail her test now, for she was already late and now she was not presentably(体面的)dressed either, but she put on a brave face and continued walking.
After a while, Maria and the washerwoman came to the workplace. The old lady opened the door and Maria followed her inside. Maria was shocked to find her whole class inside the room.

Lee took a deep breath and let it out slowly. When his lungs felt comfortable, he dived beneath the water. Looking up, he could see the bright sun shinning on the water’s surface. “Soon,” Lee thought, “I shall be able to hold my breath as long as David. Then I, too, shall be able to dive for pearls. ”
With lungs burning, he quickly surfaced and gasped(喘气) for breath. Lee was small for his twelve years, and he hated being treated as a child. David, his old brother, had been looked upon as a man long before he was Lee’s age.
Now, every day as the sun warmed the bay, David and the other young men went out to dive for oysters (牡蛎). With luck, there would be pearls in many of them. Many times Lee begged to go along, but David always refused.
So every day Lee would go to the shallow water to practice. With each day’s effort, his diving improved and he felt much at home in the water. “Tomorrow I shall challenge David. ” Lee decided. The next morning, Lee rose early, hurrying to catch up with David, who was already on the beach. “David, wait! ” called Lee.
The group of men around David grew quiet. Lee continued, “David, I say that I can hold my breath under the water as long as you can. If I win, I ask only that you treat me as a man and let me dive by your side. ”
The men of the village gasped(倒抽气) and began to laugh. David looked amused, “And what if when you lose?”
“I will not lose!” He took a breath, “But if I should, I promise not to ask to go with you for a full year!
The men of the village are here to judge. ”
Hearing this, David looked surprised.

Thoughts don’t have to be “real” or “true” to create failure or success in our lives. They just have to be believed.
Tim had always been weak in math. In high school, he had failed algebra (代数) three times before he eventually passed. Gradually, he began to accept it as an unchangeable fact. Then in college, the biggest problem that stood between him and his degree came in junior year— he had to take statistics, about which all the horror stories were circulating.
One day he was called into his professor’s office. Professor Fine, a short, stout man with thinning hair and a forever smile, sat on the front of his desk reading Tim’s record. “My son, this is your lucky day.” he looked up and repeated, “This is indeed your lucky day. You’re going to be great in stats (统计数据).” He had a huge smile on his face.
“How’s that, Doc?” Tim asked.
The professor shrugged. “You have the second kind of mind. Listen. First kind of minds are the kids who do well in algebra but don’t get stats. But second kind of mind is like yours. Kids who don’t get algebra understand statistics with no problem. They are different kinds of math that take different kinds of mind. Since you failed algebra three times, I’d guess you’d get an A in stats.” He raised his hands over his head.
“Really?” Tim asked, confused.
Professor Fine jumped to the floor and looked square (诚实的) in his eyes. “Really, and I’m happy for you. You never gave up, and now it’s going to pay off.” Then he shook Tim’s hand and slapped his back with great enthusiasm.
Tim was wild with joy at the news.
After that day, each time they met, there was a smile of approval on Professor Fine’s face and an enthusiastic handshake. Eventually, Tim began to tell his friends how well he expected to do in statistics.

Nellie and I have been best friends for if long as I can remember. We were born only a few days apart, so every year we planned a combined birthday. When we were in seventh grade, our moms said we could invite boys to our party.
We were writing out the invitation list when my mom came up. “What about inviting John?” Mom asked.
John had been in our class for only two months, but he got better grades in math and science than anyone else in class. He was a loner, though, and hadn’t made many friends.
I wrinkled my nose. “Mom, he wears the same pants every day. How could he even afford a costume?”
“The same pants?” Mom frowned.
“Yes. Brown corduroy ones” I sighed.
After school the next day, as Nellie and I were cutting paper for decorations, Mom handed me an envelope.
“Nellie's mom and I thought it’d be nice for you two to give this to John,” Mom said as she headed back to her office.
I opened the envelope delicately. Inside was a gift certificate for our favorite department store. Staring at the certificate in shock, we both knew how many cute clothes that would buy.
“So, are we going to hand it to him?” I asked.
“How embarrassing that would be!” Nellie said.
Indeed, John would be ashamed if we gave him money for clothes. “What if we slip it into his desk when no one is looking?” I proposed.
“He’d probably give it to the teacher, and then we’d have to say it was for him in front of the whole class.” Nellie rolled her eyes. More embarrassing. We had to think of something else.
“I have an idea.” Nellie snatched the envelope.
“What?”
“I won't tell you.” Nellie sang as she ran away.
