We helped on a nature reserve(保护区)for a week. We did different things every day, including cutting the reeds(芦苇),by the lake. Every day, we took turns to cook, in teams of five. When it was our teams turn, we made a simple dinner of pasta and salad for everyone. Judging by the fact that there was none left, we didn't do too badly!

We stayed with families who had kids our own age, and because they were on a mid-term break they came with us on all the trips. So except when we were actually in a language class, we were spending time with our new friends. It was a great way to practice the language we had been working on in the classroom.

Every morning we had the same breakfast, and then cleaned up the camp. When it was all completely tidy, we could head off for the day. The first time we went into the city, we were put into teams and given lists of things to spot, like statues, squares and other landmarks. With some help from the locals, my team found almost all of the things on our list and came second. We went to different museums and galleries in and around the city every day. It was a great chance to learn about another country and its history.

We stayed in a youth center in the suburbs, and went into the center of town by bus every day. It was a good way to see a bit of the city, and it didn't take long to get to the theater where we had our classes. I loved the atmosphere in the old building, and we could walk around during our breaks and watch rehearsals(排练). We learned a great deal and I'm looking forward to putting it all into practice at my school drama club next term!

The “selfie” is used to describe the self-taken photo, often from a smart phone. Women and men decorate their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts with these pictures, sometimes with puckered (翘起) lips or large smiles. In fact, the selfie has become so widely known that over 31 million photos on Instagram are taken with the selfie.
Let’s think about it. Someone takes about 10 selfies each time they do, and they only end up posting one or two of those. They pick the one that they feel makes them look the best. Isn’t that beautiful? In that one picture, someone has given himself or herself confidence. Self-image is important. In society today, we are often so consumed with the feeling that what society tells us is perfect. But maybe, with that one selfie, we feel that we fit that bill. We feel handsome, beautiful, confident, smart, happy and content. For that moment, everything bad or terrible that has ever happened to us is erased (消除), because that smile or that pucker is what gives us the determination to love ourselves.
I saw a spoken word poem recently and the young man said: If I ask you what you love, the answers will most likely roll off your tongue. You love to read. You love to write. You love birds, music, your mom, your brother, your sister, your daughter, your best friend, your dog. How long do you think you can go on and on before you say “I love myself”.
That statement hit me like a ton of bricks. I’ve struggled with confidence all of my life. I still do. And in no way am I saying that taking a selfie is a gateway to that confidence. However, the selfie does deserve some credit for allowing individuals to express themselves. Pamela Rutledge agrees, stating, “There are many more photographs available now of real people than models.”

【推荐3】Worried about the loss of rainforests and the ozone layer (臭氧层)? Well, neither of those is doing any worse than a large majority of the 6,000 to 7,000 languages that remain in use on Earth. One half of the survivors will almost certainly be gone by 2050, while 40% more will probably be well on their way out. In their place, almost all humans will speak a small number of languages——Mandarin, English, Spanish.
Linguists (语言学家) know what causes languages to disappear, but what’s less often remarked is what happens on the way to disappearance: languages’ vocabularies, grammars and expressive potential all disappear. “Say a community goes over from speaking a traditional Aboriginal(土著的) language to speaking a Creole,” says Australian Nick Evans, a language experts, “you leave behind a language where there’s very fine vocabulary for the landscape. All that is gone in a Creole. As speakers become less able to express the wealth of knowledge that has filled ancestors’ lives with meaning over thousands of years, it's no wonder that communities tend to become weakened.”
Due to the huge losses, some linguists struggle against the situation. In England, Peter Austin heads a programme that has trained many documentary linguists in England as well as in language-loss hotspots such as West Africa and South America.
However, not all approaches to the preservation of languages will be particularly helpful. Some linguists are boasting (自夸), for example, of more and more complicated means of recording languages: digital recording and storage, the Internet and mobile phone technologies. But these are encouraging the quick style of recording trip: fly in, switch on digital recorder, fly home, download to hard drive, and store gathered material for future research. That's not quite what some endangered-language experts have been seeking. Most vocal (直言不讳的) and untiring has been Michael Krauss from the University of Alaska. He has often complained that linguists are playing with technology research while most of their raw data is disappearing.
Who is to blame? Linguists who go out into communities to study, document and describe languages, argue that theoretical linguists, like Noam Chomsky, who draw conclusions about how languages work, have had so much influence that linguistics has largely ignored the continuing disappearance of languages.
1. Why does the author mention rainforests and the ozone layer in Paragraph 1?A.To explain they are of great importance. |
B.To prove they have connection with language loss. |
C.To show anxiety about environmental issues is unfounded. |
D.To stress the public should be equally concerned about languages. |
A.They can’t express ideas which are part of their culture. |
B.Getting practical information causes problems for them. |
C.They have more potential to learn languages than most people. |
D.Older and younger members of the community can’t communicate. |
A.Linguists’ popularity has decreased considerably. |
B.Linguists are failing to record languages before they die out. |
C.Linguists have made poor use of improvements in technology. |
D.Linguists’ quick style of recording trip should be encouraged. |
A.By 2050 different languages will be developing well. |
B.Local languages are preserved perfectly in West Africa. |
C.Theoretical linguists may be to blame for the loss of languages. |
D.Noam Chomsky is fond of working in communities to research. |
