Traveling can be a very fun and exciting way to vacation with your family, but it does not always turn out as expected. I have traveled a lot with my family over the years, but some experiences are worth forgetting altogether. I remember a particular traveling experience which sticks out in my mind for the wrong reasons.

My dad and stepmom had decided to drive to California for our family vacation. This was supposed to provide educational value, since we would be able to stop along the way and look at various sites in each state. Everything was going as planned until we decided to take a break and stop at the Grand Canyon(大峡谷). I had always wanted to see this exciting place and had decided to write a report on it for my eight-grade English class. We got out of the car and were walking on one of the paths to get to a cliff(悬崖) so we could take a family photo when I slipped(滑倒) and fell down. I fell on a piece of rock, and felt great pain run up my leg at once. My dad took me to the nearest hospital and, after an eight-hour wait in the emergency room(急诊室), found out that I broke two bones in my foot.

Needless to say, our vacation was no fun for me because I was in pain during the whole two-week trip. I ended up making an appointment the day we got home to see a doctor for a check-up. That was definitely not what I consider fun or a great vacation, and it really put a dent in our sightseeing plans.

【推荐1】I will always remember my mother's last few days in this world.

On February 14th, 2000 my class went on a field trip to the beach. I had so much fun. When we returned to school, my teacher told me to go to the headmaster's office. When I got into the office, I saw a police office. Suddenly I realized something was wrong. The police office told me what had happened and we went to pick my sister up. After that, we went to the hospital and waited. Time went slowly. Finally, we got to see our mother. It was terrible.

On the next day, the headmaster came and told my two teachers what had happened. I was taking a rest that day. I knew it had something to do with my mother. I kept thinking that she either died or had gotten better. How I wished that she had gotten better. When my teacher took me outside, my sister ran up to me. She started crying, “She's gone. Teresa, mommy's gone. She's dead.” I couldn't believe it. We jumped into the car and drove straight to the hospital. Most of my family were there. The silence was terrible. I knew I had to say goodbye.

Today when I look back, I still miss my mother very much, but I know that I will live. My mother was a strong mother, who had the biggest heart. My mother was an angel walking on the earth. I will always remember her as living. When someone is asked who their hero (英雄) is, they usually say someone famous, like Michael Jordan or Britney Spears, When someone asks me who my hero is,   I tell them, my mother. My mother lives every day. That is what makes her a true hero.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者骑车时发生了交通事故,严重受伤。幸运的是,经过良好的治疗,作者活了下来。为了再次骑车,作者开始跑步,并终于重新骑上了自行车。

【推荐2】I was on one of my usual group bike rides on a quiet country road in Santa Barbara, riding with about 30 other road cyclists, when a car tried to change direction suddenly to avoid a runner. From what I’ve been told, the driver moved around us so fast that he lost country of his car and hit me.

I don’t remember any of this because I was thrown off my bike and directly into a tree. I had a serious brain bleed (出血) — despite the fact that I was wearing my helmet. I also broke a number of bones. Luckily, with good treatment I survived.

That accident happened four years ago. Because of my brain injury, I had to stay off my bike for a year because if I fell and again got my head hurt, it would be worse. To get back on my bike, I started running. I was still in a lot of pain, but I was determined. Nobody was going to hit me, change my life and then keep me from doing what I like at some point.

A year after my accident, I finally got back on my bike. But it had left an influence on me. If there are cars behind me, I will feel strained. However, I still ride.

Before my accident, I never raced. Now I’m faster than ever. One reason is that I have lost about 30 pounds. When I got hit, I weighed 205 pounds. After six weeks of being on a feeding tube (饲管), I walked out of the hospital at 175 pounds, and I’ve stayed around that number ever since. I also think I’m faster because my accident lifted my competitive spirit. Since my accident, I’ve loved bike racing.

At the end of the day, I wanted to prove to myself that I could get back to doing what I loved — and I did that.

1. What do we know about the accident?
A.It led to the driver’s heavy bleeding.B.It caused several cyclists to hit trees.
C.It was worsened by the lack of a helmet.D.It resulted in serious injuries to the author.
2. Why did the author begin to run?
A.To reduce his pain.B.To kill his leisure time.
C.To prepare for cycling.D.To develop his determination.
3. What does the underlined word “strained” mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Nervous.B.Excited.C.Curious.D.Relaxed.
4. What caused the author to lose 30 pounds?
A.His competing in races.B.His staying at the hospital.
C.His being on a no-dinner diet for long.D.His running long distances every day.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲的是英国画家Stephen Wiltshire的成长经历。

【推荐3】Though many artists specialize in cityscapes (城市风光), very few create masterpieces as detailed as those sketched (画素描) by Stephen Wiltshire. Even more impressive is that each landscape, which takes the British artist just a few days to complete, is drawn from memory, a talent that has earned him the name “The Human Camera”.

Though Stephen is now considered an artistic talent, his start in life was rocky. Suffering from autism (自闭症) at the age of three, he was unable to relate to people and refused to say a single word. His talent came to light when his kindergarten teachers noticed how much the young boy enjoyed drawing. To encourage him to speak, they began providing him with art supplies only if he orally requested them. It was not surprising what was Stephen’s first word, spoken at age five. As a child, Stephen was good at sketching wildlife along with drawings of his teachers and classmates. However, as he grew older, it became apparent that his real talent and passion lay in drawing city skylines.

His unbelievable work did not go unnoticed. Stephen sold his first painting for $1620 (£ 1150) at age seven, and was invited by the British Prime Minister to create a drawing of the Salisbury Cathedral at age eight. Five years later, his first book of art came out in London! In 2006, to honor his significant contribution to the art world, Stephen was presented with a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Prince Charles.

Stephen’s famous artwork includes skylines of Rome, Hong Kong, Dubai, and London. A career highlight remains his first visit to New York when he was 13, a city he loves and often visits. It was there where he met the late author Oliver Sacks. The two became lifelong friends. Sacks once wrote, “His limitations can serve as strengths, too. His vision is valuable, because it conveys a wonderfully direct, unconventional view of the world.”

1. Why is Stephen called “The Human Camerna”
A.He is able to copy cityscapes exactly.
B.He can draw cities entirely from memory.
C.He is able to sketch cityscapes quickly.
D.He has drawn many cities in a few days.
2. What was probably Stephen’s first word since birth?
A.Mom.B.Art.C.Teacher.D.Paper.
3. What happened to Stephen when he was 13?
A.He sold his first painting.B.He met the government head.
C.He published a book.D.He received an MBE
4. How did Sacks regard Stephen’s disease?
A.It contributes to Stephen’s talent.B.It has no limitations to Stephen.
C.It gives Stephen great inner strength.D.It conveys a different view of the world.
