If you’ve never heard of a biophilic city before. You probably will soon-there’s a growing movement emerging all over the world.
A biophilic city is a city where the planning and design largely integrate the natural world into the daily lives of residents. It’s based on the idea that humans have a deep love for and the necessity to connect with nature.
“We describe the vision of biophilic cities as immersive nature-nature is not just something to be found in a park here and there that you have to walk to, but rather we need to reimagine the city as a park, or as a forest,” says Tim Bratley, a professor of sustainable communities. “There is a renewed appreciation for how essential nature is in cities and how it can help to make them more beautiful places.” Beatley says. “We know, for instance, that cities face great pressures from climate change-a key response must be nature and nature-based solutions, such as cooling critics with trees and urban forests.”
Beatley’s colleague, Peter Newman, a distinguished professor of sustainability, says he has devoted nearly 50 years to activism, research and teaching how to make cities more sustainable. He made a film with Beatley called “Singapore: Biophilic City”.
Singapore is seen as an exceptional biophilic city. “In our film we show how biophilic values began with the first Prime Minister of Singapore saying that the environment in the city was as important as the economy.” says Newman, who got the idea of making the film after he spent some time in Singapore teaching a course. “Singapore is one of the best examples in showing that you can accommodate city development and population growth and also actually protect nature as well,” says Newman. Greenery is woven throughout the city, not only in many parks, but integrated even into the design of tall buildings.
“Singapore has now officially changed its motto from ‘Singapore, Garden City’ to ‘Singapore, a City in a Garden’,” says Beatley.

A review of research published in May 2021 found those who ate the most plant foods were less likely to die from any cause over follow-up time periods that varied across the studies from 5 to 25 years, compared to those who ate the least.
Tomatoes are a fruit. They’re rich in vitamin C and “lycopene”, which is a carotenoid. Carotenoids are pigments produced by plants and give vegetables their bright colours.
A review of six trials asked people to consume tomato products equivalent to 1 — 1.5 large tomatoes or 1 —1.5 cups of tomato juice daily for about six weeks. The researchers found people who did this had reduced blood levels of triglycerides (a type of fat in your blood that increases heart disease risk), as well as lower total and “bad” cholesterol levels, compared to those who didn’t have any tomatoes.
Another review of 11 studies tested the effect of tomatoes and lycopene on blood pressure. Researchers found consuming any tomato products led to a large decrease in systolic blood pressure (the first number that measures the pressure at which the heart pumps blood). However, there was no effect on the diastolic pressure (the second number which is the pressure in the heart when it relaxes). In the group who had high blood pressure to begin with, both systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased after eating tomato products compared to placebos.
A review of studies included a total of 260, 000 men and found those with the highest intakes of cooked tomatoes, tomato sauces and tomato-based foods had a 15 — 20% lower risk of developing cancer compared to those with the lowest tomato intakes. Keep in mind connection doesn’t necessarily mean cause and effect, though.

The state's coastal bays and the Gulf of Maine are among the fastest warming large water bodies on the planet, making the puffins' fate a test-case for how climate change could disrupt marine ecosystems worldwide.
The little clown-colored birds faced a complex of challenges: nests were flooded by some of the heaviest rains in a hundred years, exposing chicks to cold and predators. It was tough for young puffins, who were being brought up in caves along the island's shores. And their parents had a hard time finding herring (鲱鱼) and other North Atlantic prey they usually dive for, which scientists think may have swum to cooler waters too deep or far-off for the birds. The adult puffins flew farther than usual to find food. Scientists say this limited their time to keep baby puffins warm in their nests. They did find and bring to the nests a lot of butterfish, but the thing is that butterfish are too big for young puffins to swallow.
The director of the National Audubon Society's Seabird Institute, Don Lyons, says puffins provide a unique window on global warming, on how even small shifts in the range or timing of any one species' occurrence can influence the fate of many others. "Working with puffins in Maine, we're seeing the harbingers (预兆) of climate change every day," he said. "I tend to think of puffins as a group of researchers. They're going out and sampling our marine ecosystem all summer, many times a day. And the way we learn from them is watching what fish they bring back and how well they are able to raise baby coffins. ... They're really telling us to be concerned, you know, to pay attention."
Lyons says that with good management of herring and other fisheries that the puffins depend on, the birds should be able to hang on. Puffins can live up to 30 years and this means it won’t be too terrible if they meet only a bad year. He adds, though, that their future in Maine may depend on just how often those bad years keep rolling in.

The same goes for any other clothes, so cloth mending is slowly gone. But what about something truly special and dear to your hearts? You can’t just go out and change something of feeling value, but you can’t wear it with a hole in it either. That’s where the magical art of kaketsugi comes in. It’s really an unbelievable technique(技术).
Kaketsugi is a hard process that begins with cutting a small piece of cloth from inside the clothing, where its absence will not be noticed. This piece is then brushed with acetone, which makes cutting single threads(线) a bit easier.
Cutting the piece of cloth down to single threads is probably the hardest part of kaketsugi, but people who are good at this skill say that using the same cloth as the one that the clothing is made of is key to making the mending truly unseen in the end. The newly-gotten threads are then carefully sewn(缝) over the hole or broken area of the clothing, from different directions, and from both sides of the cloth. Once the sewing process is complete, the leftover threads are used to mask the breakdown even more. Finally, the area repaired with kaketsugi is ironed out(熨平). That helps smooth everything out and at this point, it’s almost impossible to see where the hole was in the first place. The clothing looks fire-new.
Interestingly, unseen mending works just as well on small holes of just a few millimeters, as it does on large ones of over 3 centimeters. It’s just that a large broken area will take more time to fix, so the larger the hole is, the more expensive the repairs are.
Kaketsugi may seem expensive, but keep in mind that it is usually kept for special clothing with feeling or historical value. Also, the work and time that goes into it is certainly worth it.

And the vendors (商贩) held out pretty well. Even as the raindrops intensified, folks kept exploring the tables stationed in the parking lot of St. Monica Church. Among the crowd were a number of college students, mostly from the University of Rochester, likely brought in by the College Night awards being offered — a five-dollar token (购物券), a handbag, and a prize raffle entry, all free of charge.
Now in its 15th year, Westside volunteer Jackie Farrell said the market partners merely with local farms, businesses, and community groups to populate its tables. “Our mission really is to serve the people in the community, getting them health and nutrition information, and connecting them to the farmers who grow the produce,” Farrell said, “Everything has to be local. It’s a producer-only market, so you have to grow or produce whatever you’re going to sell here.” Those producers had diverse offerings. Vegetables, of course, were abundant but sellers also pushed cheeses, spreads, bread, prepared pasta dishes, and much more.
The community groups offering information were diverse too. Recovery All Ways, a local nonprofit with a stated “mission to support anyone affected by substance use disorder” handed out Narcan and trained people in its use. Their station was next to a Moms Demand Action tent, where staffers provided information on physical safety. SNAP-Ed nutrition and benefits educators also ran a table.
The activities of the stations were scored by live music. The University’s Midnight Ramblers performed, and a local jazz band played away as the rain showers started rolling in.
Farrell hoped that the College Night promotion would help make students more comfortable crossing the bridge into the Rochester community. “We love college students, and we keep encouraging them that all they have to do is go across the bridge.”
