When should a child begin to take music lessons? To answer this question, it’s important to look at the reasons why a parent might want their child to take music lessons.

There is a growing body of research that shows a “window of opportunity” from birth to age nine for developing a musical sensibility within children. During this time, the mental structures and mechanisms(机制) associated with processing and understanding music are in the best stages of development. And that is why it is important to expose children in this age range to music.

The important question then is not when to start lessons, but the goal of music lessons for young children. For example, very young children are exposed to instruments not to master them, but to gain experience and learn to develop meaningful relationships with music. If this is your goal, then the “lessons“ can and should start soon after birth and certainly within the child’s first year. These “lessons” do not have to be-in fact, at first probably shouldn’t be very formal.

Once the child is around age three, it may be time for more formalized “lessons”. Again, the goal is not to learn to play an instrument but to further develop skills like identifying(识别) a beat in music, identifying melody, or identifying instruments.

By age five, most children have built a foundation that has prepared them for formalized music lessons. Even now, the goal of the lessons is not to become a great performer on the instrument but the same as when they play music at three. Piano and violin are the two most common instruments played at his age, but others have tried the recorder, guitar, or ukulele with success.

By age ten, the child will have a variety of skills associated with their instrument of choice. They’ll also have the physical strength to try a different, bigger instrument that requires a higher level of strength and determination. Around this time, the goal of lessons properly changes from gaining experience with music to improving performance ability.

1. Why does the author mention the research finding in Paragraph 2?

A.To learn to play an instrument.
B.To just have some fun with others.
C.To recognize different musical instruments
D.To become a great performer on an instrument.
3. When should a child start focusing on improving performance ability while learning music?
A.At the age of 1.B.At the age of 3.
C.At the age of 5.D.At the age of 10.
4. What is the text mainly about?

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了运动不仅可以让人保持健康,还可以提高人们的脑力。

【推荐1】If you thought running was just great for the body, then think again. Scientists have found that the sport not only keeps people fit but also improves your brain power (脑力).

The research found that people who keep fit are more likely to have larger brains, better memories and clearer thinking. They also found that unfit people tended to have smaller brains and reduced cognitive skills. The findings add to a growing body of evidence which links exercise with helping protect the brain against ageing (老化) and also helping it replace dying cells (死细胞). This might reduce the risk of many illnesses and diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

One research paper within its latest issue sees scientists at Kentucky University putting 30 adults aged 59-69 on a treadmill (跑步机). Their heart and lung capacity (肺活量) was measured and an MRI scanner was used to assess the blood flow to their brains. Those who were less fit had smaller brains compared to the fitter volunteers who had larger brains. Scientists in Germany followed 21 adults aged between 60-77. As they went through a three-month fitness program, they saw improvements in their memory.

Researchers are not yet sure why exercise helps to protect brain cells but some research in mice has produced results. Mice, examined at the National Institute on Ageing, in Baltimore, found that cells in the hippocampus (海马体), an area of the brain used for memory, were actively reproducing while their fatter peers were in decline.

Linda Clare, professor of clinical psychology of ageing and dementia at Exeter University and a member of the Global Council on Brain Health told The Sunday Times: “Moderate intensity aerobic (有氧的) activity such as walking, cycling or running can produce changes in brain structure and function.”

1. Who tend to have larger brains, better memories and clearer thinking?
A.People who are healthy.B.People who are thin.
C.People who are unhealthy.D.People who are fat.
2. What do we learn from the experiment in paragraph 3?
A.Those who were less fit had larger brains.
B.Those who were fitter had smaller brains.
C.Exercise helps people improve their memory.
D.Old people doing exercise improve memory better than young people.
3. Accord to Linda Clare, what kind of activity can NOT produce changes in brain structure and function?
A.Walking.B.Singing.C.Cycling.D.Running.

【推荐3】Once the temperatures rise to full-on summer highs, life becomes difficult for pet parents. Long walks, the lunchtime run and road trips, things you enjoy together quite safely for the rest of the year, can become dangerous because too much exercise in hot sun or leaving animals in a car, even in the shade, can cause heatstroke (中暑) which can be deadly.

“Heatstroke is a condition where a dog’s temperature rises to the point where damage to internal organs (器官) can occur,” warns Dr. Cindy Bressler. “This is usually seen during the summer months or in warm climates, and is caused primarily because the dog cannot cool itself quickly enough.”

Because of their fur coats, dogs can’t cool via sweating through the skin like humans and they cool themselves by breathing heavily, quickly pulling cool air into the lungs and pushing hot air out. Overweight dogs are more likely to suffer heatstroke. Signs of heatstroke include breathing difficulty, vomiting (呕吐), high body temperatures and a bright red tongue.

“Dogs do not sweat like humans, and without this natural body cool-off response, they are more vulnerable than humans in high temperatures,” says Bressler. “To help prevent heatstroke, you should always have cool water available for your dog and never leave your dog alone in a car, especially in hot weather. Pets who are outdoors should always have access to a shaded area.”

If heatstroke occurs, Bressler advises cooling your pet with cool water, wet towels, fans and cold air.

“Do not cool them too quickly because that can be dangerous,” she adds. “Bring them to the doctor immediately.”

Cats also run the risk of overheating: “With cats,” says Bressler, “it’s important to include water in their diet as they do not seek out water like dogs do. Cats should always have access to fresh and clean water.”
