Four ways to be admired

Gaining admiration requires honesty, hard work, perseverance and some other qualities.    1    

Lead, don’t follow.

People who are admired are unafraid to do something new or different.    2    You can be a leader even among those who have greater official authority than you by convincing others to follow a certain course or act in a certain way. Leadership requires more than speaking and acting in an inspirational and influential way. You must also be willing to take responsibility when something needs doing.

It means you will stand by the things you believe. Admirable individuals try to keep their personal integrity (诚信) by staying true to who they are even when it is unpopular or questioned. However, standing by your principles (原则) and acting with integrity doesn’t mean that you are unwilling to accept or consider other ideas.

Take a positive attitude.

A positive attitude doesn’t mean pretending that everything is great all the time. That is unrealistic.    4    Try to be positive about some negative situations, and maybe things will get better.

Work hard.

Whether you’re working for minimum wage or managing a large company, you should always take pride in your work. Doing so will show that you are capable of doing your part. Go above and beyond in your workplace by giving your all on the job. If you make pizzas, make the best pizza you can every time.    5    Take pride in your work and doing it will be a pleasure, not a hard job. Keep your office or workspace clean and well-organized.

• Ask open-ended questions.

Ask questions that have more than one possible answer.     3     They help avoid resulting in short response. For example, instead of asking, “Did you like your high school?”, you could ask, “What did you like about your high school?”

As with any good conversation, the biggest key is to listen. If they respond to your question with a short statement such as “Yes”or “No”, that might indicate that they aren’t comfortable talking about a particular subject. Instead, talk about something that you know they're interested in. For example, “I heard you won your football game the other night. I’d love to hear about it.”

    5     For example, you could say, “I really like your shirt. Where did you get it?” This could move the conversation in another direction while making the other person feel good. Stick to saying nice things if you’re trying to make small talk.

Take a break. Taking a little break will help you in the long run. Turn on some energizing music to get yourself positive. Relax and talk to a friend in person or on the phone for a few minutes.     5
