Mrowwwwl! The cat meowed angrily as she clawed at Jennifer’s arm, drawing a thin line of blood. Just as quickly as she struck out with her claw, the agile (灵活的) orange and-white cat leaped back to her hiding space under Jennifer’s bed. From the Avec underneath the bed, two green eyes produced bright light, staring back out at Jennifer.
Jennifer was starting to feel discouraged in a major way. She was never one for giving up; but it had been sevetal days like this since she adopted the cat—Darla—from the animal shelter, struggling to win over the young cat’s affection through treats and soft and gentle whispers. It was during her summer break, so she had plenty of time to keep trying to win over the animal. But it wasn’t time that was the issue — it was Jennifer’s emotions that were quickly fading.
It had been two years since Jennifer’s beloved brown tabby (斑猫)-Marlin-passed away. She never could quite get over the shock and emptiness which remained in her heart here childlike joy once thrived. Marlin had been Jennifer’s faithful friend and loving companion rough all the pains and trials of growing up. After Marlin died, things were never quite the same again for Jennifer. It was the first real death to pierce Jennifer’s heart and signaled the end of her carefree childhood.
She desperately wanted Darla to love her the way Marlin had and for ee to love Darla just the same; but what was Jennifer supposed to do now? The cut on her arm was all she had to how for her effort. Jennifer sat on the floor, burying her face in her hands, and her body trembled as she softly began to cry.

My sister Jeanne and I were born only 14 months apart, and we once shared many happy moments. She liked telling jokes to me and I would laugh heartily. She always said she loved my laughter and it’s the most impressive sound for her.But by the time we were teenagers we had years without speaking and lost touch due to family breaking. By age 19,I had moved away from our home in Wisconsin to live on my father’s horse farm in Virginia.Jeanne got married at 20,moved to Chicago, and became—well, I didn’t know what we lived separate lives in separate states, and our connection somehow ended.
Fastforward about five years.I was 24 and on a trip with my best friend to New York City, a place I had never been to.It was so different from my hometown.I was used to riding my horse to the corner store where everyone knew everyone and everything went on in the quiet little cowboy town of Driver, Virginia. We went to New York to visit my friend’s cousin and see the sights. We went to Little Italy, the Statue of Liberty, Chinatown, and several Manhattan clubs. I had never seen so many taxis in one spot in all my life.
During a day of sightseeing, we were crossing a very busy street loaded with people.Everyone was in a hurry.I was laughing at something my friend just said, and then I suddenly heard my name yelled from somewhere behind me:“Cheryl!” The voice was so familiar.I froze in my steps in the middle of the road.Tears welled up spontaneously(不由自主地) in my eyes.I knew without a shadow of a doubt that it was my sister Jeanne.I yelled back before even turning to look.“Jeanne?”
It was her.“Oh my God!” I screamed, and I began pushing people out of my way to get to her.The crowd started to part—even by New York standards, we must have seemed crazy. And there we were, standing in the middle of a Manhattan street, facing each other and smiling. I couldn’t believe it.

Every evening Sylvie left her grandmother’s house to bring her cow home. The old animal spent her days in the open country eating grass. It was Sylvie’s job to bring her home to be milked.
This evening, as usual, the child hurried the cow through the dark forest, following a narrow path that led to her grandmother’s home.
She came across a young man in front of the house. “Hello, little girl,” he said, “I’ve been looking for birds, but I’ve lost my way.”The young man explained he was a scientist, who searched for birds. “Do you put them in a cage (鸟笼)?” Sylvie asked. “No,”he answered, “I kill them and keep them for my study.”
“I saw a white heron (苍鹭) not far from here yesterday. Have you seen it, too?”he asked Sylvie. Sylvie’s heart began to beat fast. She had seen that white bird on the other side of the forest. The young man continued.“I will give $10 to you if you show me where it is.”
Sylvie thought happily she would get the $10 for her grandmother. Then she went to climb to the top of a tall tree. The higher Sylvie climbed, the taller the tree seemed to grow. Suddenly, a bird with broad white wings and a long neck flew past Sylvie. The white heron sat on the nest in a nearby tree. She found the heron’s secret home.

Soapy is a twenty-four-pound rabbit. People look surprised when they first touch him and remark how soft he is. I've noticed he seems to make everyone who meets him a little softer, too. So when I started to work as a volunteer in the community, I decided to take him with me as a therapy(疗法)animal.
One day, Soapy and I visited a shelter for women who had suffered from violence. The women in the shelter all looked at me in low spirits. No one smiled a greeting. One little girl in particular caught my attention. Never raising her eyes, never reaching out, she wandered in and out of the gathered group. The staff informed me that the little girl, named Alice, had been there for over a month and had not spoken the entire time. Nothing they tried had any effect. I didn't want to imagine what would have happened to rob this little girl of the curiosity and enthusiasm so natural to childhood.
Spreading a blanket on the floor, I sat down and opened Soapy's carrier. As the women circled around me, I told the group that Soapy would come to them if they sat on the blanket. Several women did this, including Alice. In a short time, Soapy emerged from his carrier and slowly jumped from one woman to another. After touching Soapy, these women looked down. and smiled softly. Soapy continued his rounds, and the women gradually began to talk about Soapy and I chatted with them as I kept one eye on Alice. She sat rigidly at the edge of the blanket legs held out straight in front of her. She was staring hard at Soapy. It appeared that Soapy kept making eye contact with her, too. He would jump from person to person, each visit taking him closer to her. I began to wonder if he was stopping to give her time to watch him. I looked at her. again. She sat there nervously, just staring.
Paragraph 1:
Finally Soapy came to a stop when he was about two inches from Alice's legs.

Alex rode his bike on his way home, and Johnson’s Pond came into view.
Sometimes his dad took him canoeing (划独木舟) there, and Alex loved it. The pond was always alive with activity, and sometimes Alex discovered turtles (乌龟) sunbathing on suing rocks Alex as curious about turtles. When it was too rainy to go canoeing, he often went to the library to check out books on turtles,
Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny day. He decided to ask Dad if they could go canoeing and look for turtles again. Suddenly Alex saw something in the road up ahead. It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for a rock to be. He jumped off to have a look.
And then, the rock started to move! It was actually a large turtle slowly making its way across the road! Alex knew right away it was a snapping turtle.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a car approaching The turtle was still only halfway across the road Alex knew he couldn’t pick it up because snapping turtles have a powerful bite and they could even bite off someone’s finger! What could he do?
Thinking fast, he started waving both hands wildly. “Stop! Stop!” he cried. The car slowed to a stop.
“Are you alight, Alex?” It was his neighbor, Mrs. Ramos.
“I’m fine, Mrs. Ram’s.” said Alex. “I’m just trying to save a turtle. It’s probably going to lay egg.”
“Oh, yeah. It’s spring.” said Mrs. Ram’s. “So, I guess a lot of turtles need to lay their eggs in the grass across the road.” Then she waved goodbye and drove off.
Alex thought about what Mrs. Ram’s had said. “There would probably be more turtles trying to cross the road at this spot!” he realized. But he couldn’t stand there all day trying to stop cars. He looked around and a road sign caught his eye. And then his face brightened.
He jumped on his bike and raced home to find Dad.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, Dad and Alex drove to the pond with the wooden sign in the car.
