The Lake of Heaven
Changbaishan is in Jilin Province, Northeast China. Much of this beautiful, mountainous area is thick forest. Changbaishan is China’s largest nature reserve and it is kept in its natural state for the people of China and visitors from all over the world to enjoy. The land varies in height from 700 meters above sea level to over 2,000 meters and is home to a great diversity of rare plants and animals, Among the rare animals are cranes, black bears, leopards and tigers. Many people come to Changbaishan to study its unique plants and animals. Others come to walk in the mountains, to see the spectacular waterfalls or to bathe in the hot water pools. However, the attraction that arouses the greatest appreciation in the reserve is Tianchi or the Lake of Heaven.
Tianchi is a deep lake that has formed in the crater of a dead volcano on top of the mountain. The lake is 2,194 meters above sea level, and more than 200 meters deep. In winter the surface freezes over. It takes about an hour to climb from the end of the road to the top of the mountain. When you arrive you are rewarded not only with the sight of its clear waters, but also by the view of the other sixteen mountain peaks that surround Tianchi.
There are many stories told about Tianchi. The most well-known concerns three young women from heaven. They were bathing in Tianchi when a bird flew above them and dropped a small fruit onto the dress of the youngest girl. When she picked up the fruit to smell it, it flew into her mouth. Having swallowed the fruit, the girl became pregnant and later gave birth to a handsome boy. It is said that this boy, who had a great gift for languages and persuasion, is the father of the Manchu people.
If you are lucky enough to visit the Lake of Heaven with your loved one, don’t forget to drop a coin into the clear blue water to guarantee your love will be as deep and lasting as the lake itself.

But space travel is available (可获得的) to a small group of people who are very rich. Now, a Japanese company plans on opening space up to ordinary people.
The company is planning on sending space viewing balloons that will make space travel available to people who are not wealthy or have no skills needed to fly a rocket (火箭). “It’s safe and money -saving for people,” Keisuke Iwaya, the CEO of the company, told reporters. “The idea is to make space travel for everyone.” he added.
While the balloons do not actually go into outer space, the capsule (太空舱) will fly higher than some planes and will give passengers a clear view of the universe (宇宙).
The company developed a capsule that can fit two people—a pilot and passenger—and a balloon that can fly to a height of 25 kilometers. It took 12 years to develop. Unlike rockets and hot air balloons, the reusable balloons will be lifted by helium (a very light gas). It will take two hours to rise and will stay there for an hour before beginning its going down. The capsule itself is 1.5 meters wide and has several windows that will allow passengers to view the earth below or the universe above.
Keisuke Iwaya worked together with the Japanese travel company JTB Corp to support the sales when the space capsule is ready to operate as a business. Applications are now being accepted until the end of August, 2023. The first five passengers will be announced in October. At this point, the price is out of reach at €167,000 but will be reduced to the tens of thousands of euros.
The first flights will leave once every week, weather permitting. While most future space travelers may dream about flying into space in a rocket, floating in a balloon capsule is a kinder and safer way to travel. Wish you a safe journey!

I find myself wondering what it is about this traditional meal, which has existed for more than 1,000 years. What makes it a Chinese food favourite? It seems that the answer lies beyond the dish itself.
Hot pot isn’t just designed to keep you warm during the cold months; it’s also a social experience. It’s a “theatre” cooked food that turns a meal into an event. There is a lot of fun for everyone to have in adding some foods to the hot pot.
Hot pot is eaten over two to three hours. For this reason, it is often considered an evening’s entertainment, and a time to spend with friends and families. However, many Westerners would be put off by the idea of other people sticking chopsticks in their food. When we come to eat at the table in the UK, we often have our own shares, although the experience is still a social one.
A similar experience to the hot pot can be found in Korean barbecue restaurants, which let you cook your own meat. This allows people to have their meat done however they want.
For most Westerners, the idea of going to a restaurant to cook their own food is very strange. But having a go, I find it’s now one of my favourite meals in Beijing. The steam from the pot left my clothes smelling of food when I got home, but perhaps this was also part of the experience. When the cold wind is blowing outside, I am sitting around with my good friends, eating and drinking. For me, it’s like a dinner party where my taste buds (味蕾) and my appetite are equally satisfied in the warm company of friends.
1. What is the main reason why hot pot is popular in China?A.It has a history of over 1,000 years. | B.It is a fun social experience. |
C.It serves people with many kinds of foods. | D.It keeps people very warm in winter. |

C.don’t like sharing food with others in restaurants |
D.don’t mind the smell of food staying on their clothes |

“All girls, not just the sporty ones, should take physical exercise,” Ms. Fraser says. Research that girls are far less active than boys is worrying, she argues. Ms. Fraser will tell the group that she supports “sport for all”. “That’s why I love it when our schools have A, B, C and D teams and beyond,” she says.
The GDST draws on research from the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation which suggests only a quarter of girls in England meet basic levels of activity each week. One in five girls do no activity at all, twice the proportion of boys, the research suggests.
Ms. Fraser says other research suggests that more than 80% of women business leaders played sports while growing up. She uses the examples of former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who once was a skater and tennis player, and the head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, who was in the French national swimming team. Ms. Fraser says Olympic medallists like Jessica Ennis and Katherine Grainger are excellent role models for young women but says women’s sport needs more money and more news reports.
Valerie Dunsford, head of Sheffield High School for Girls, part of GDST, said it was important to offer a large number of sports to attract different types of girls. “Not everyone wants to be out playing the hockey.” said Ms. Dunsford.

Rows of terraces(梯田) wraparound the mountainsides from the ground to the very mountaintops, as far as the eye can see. Built with stonewalls at least 1, 000 years old, possibly 2, 000years, they are maintained by the ancient tradition and the lifestyle of the local Ifugao people. Jimmy Padchanan, an official of the village of Mayoyao, said in an interview, “We are combining the old societies with the new, while maintaining many of our values.” He and the local people were confident that they would keep the best of the new and the strength of the past to protect the terraces, which are described as “a living cultural landscape of breathtaking beauty”.
