【推荐1】The Beauties of the Stone Age
I have just come home after viewing some amazing works of art that were recently discovered in Church Hole Gave in Nottinghamshire. They are not drawings but etchings—shapes cut into the rock—and they describe different kinds of wild animals.
First of all, the number is great: there are 90 in all. Moreover, 58 of them are on the ceiling (天花板). This is quite unusual in cave art, according to Dr. Wilbur Samson of Central Midlands University. “Wall pictures are the usual way,” he says. “The Church Hole etchings are an artistic achievement. It was thought that ice-age hunters in this country were separated from those in central areas of Europe, but the Church Hole etchings proved that they were actually part of a way of living, thinking and seeing the world that had spread right across Europe.”
News of such exciting discoveries spreads quickly, and thanks to the Internet and mobile phones, a great many people have known about this discovery. However, an examination of the etchings last year failed to show the presence of them. The reason lay in the expectations of the researchers. They looked for the usual type of cave drawings, which show up best under direct light. So they used powerful torches (火炬), shining them straight onto the rock face. However, the Church Hole etchings are not drawings on the rocks, like the other cave ones. They are modifications of the rock itself and can’t be easily made out. They show up best when seen from a certain direction in the natural light of early morning.
Dr. Samson feels that the lighting factor provides important information about the function of these works of art. I think the artists knew very well that the etchings would hardly be seen except early in the morning. We can decide that the cave was used for important events like animal worship (祭拜), and that they were conducted just after dawn, as the beginning of the day’s hunting.
To which I can only add that I feel very lucky to have been able to view Church Hole. It is a site of great importance culturally and is part of the traditional values, not only of this country, but the world as a whole.

Instead of visualizing the pains of war and destruction, the artist’s paintings offer a rare peaceful beauty, which she hopes will ease the suffering of the people who have been caught up in the bloody war.
“For me, it was a discharge of negative energy that I have got during the war. I used to feel annoyed but didn’t know how to get rid of the pressures. Luckily, I finally found that I could seek shelter in the beautiful things.” Ahmed says.
Ahmed’s exhibition is rare in Yemen since the war erupted in 2014. For most Yemenis, the most urgent problems are escaping the next air attack or finding the next meal for their families. But some artists, like Ahmed, are now trying to put the country in a positive light through their brushes and colors, and to find an escape for the people and themselves to momentarily forget the sounds of explosions and air attack.
In Ahmed’s paintings, she has tried to change the misery on people’s faces by using delightful colors.
“In the exhibition, we have special sections on paintings of famous people in the country, such as the Yemeni writer and poet Abdullah AIBaradouni, and the singer Abu Bakr Salem,” Ahmed says, adding that the artistic portraits of familiar faces can offer people a reminder of the time before the war erupted.
Many visitors who came to the exhibition believed it could relieve the despair inside the hearts.
Samah A-Wajih, one of the visitors who attended the exhibition, expressed her gladness about the paintings and wished all the world to see that there is still beauty, despite the destruction in the country.
“This certainly calls on the world that there are hope and life inside this war stricken country.” AI-Wajih says.
Abdul Wasea Al-Ahnoumi, an organizer of the exhibition, says, “Young men and women are looking, through their paintings, for love, peace and safety away from the war. In these drawings, you can feel the touches of a person who wants peace and a good life far off the crazy war that destroyed souls.”

Are road tests necessary for teen drivers?
Some say new drivers should be able to get a license without taking a road test.
What you need to know ● The minimum age to get a driver’s license in most states is 16. Teens must complete a driver’s education course, pass a written test, and take a road test. ● Since the pandemic, Wisconsin has waived (放弃) road tests for drivers ages 16 and 17. The state is considering making this change permanent. Iowa and Nebraska have similar waivers. ● Studies show that teens ages 16-19 are at the highest risk of any age group to be in a motor vehicle crash. | |
Yes - of course teen drivers need a test Even after taking a driving course and practicing for hours, teens do not have enough real-world experience to start driving on their own. It’s important to test a teen’s knowledge of the rules of the road—and not just with a written test. Plus, a road test ensures that every driver who passes has a certain level of knowledge. Nothing can substitute for a road test. | No - it’s not necessary for safe driving After 50 hours of supervised driving plus a driver’s education course, teens are more than prepared to get a license. And think of the time that will be saved. It lets busy motor vehicle departments complete work that piled up during the pandemic. Experts agree that practice is the best way to reduce car accidents. Skipping the road test and letting teens drive earlier gives them time to get better. |
What do you think? What do you think? Are road tests necessary for teen drivers?
