Karie double-checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 percent today, she’d win her class’s First-Quarter Spelling Challenge and a brand-new dictionary. Plus. Ms. McCormack had promised to do a handstand (倒立) if anyone got a perfect score.
Three more words to go. N-i-c-e-l-y. Q-u-i-c-k-l-y. H-o-n-e-s-t-y. Wait! She’d spelled honesty, not honestly. She erased ty and wrote ly before handing in her paper.
“I’ll correct these while you’re at recess (休息),” Ms. McCormack said.
After recess, MS. McCormack walked to the front of the room and cleared her throat. Then, as if she were an Olympic gymnast. Ms. McCormack’s feet flipped into the air.
“Congratulations, Arie! You did it!” she announced while upside down. The whole class erupted! Ms. McCormack righted herself and presented Karie with her prize. Karie grinned as she read the label on the box:
To Karie Carter; for her perfect first-quarter score in spelling.
“Everything is OK?” Mom asked as Karie burst through the front door after school. “Everything’s PERFECT!” Karie shouted. showing Mom her spelling test and prize. Mom hugged her. “Put the test on the fridge so Dad and Kevin can see it when they get home.”
“And Casper, too.” Karie picked up her cat. “Can you spell nicely, Casper? And quickly and honestly, and...” Karie’s stomach tumbled to the floor. Honestly?
H-O-N-E-S-L-Y!
“ Karie, what’s the matter?” said Mom.
“I don’t feel so good,” Karie said, putting Casper down and stuffing the test paper into her backpack.
Soon Karie heard her dad and Kevin come in. The smell of pizza wafted (飘荡) in the air. Karie thought back to the last time they’d picked up pizza after Kevin’s school play. They almost reached home when Mom realized the cashier had given them too much change. “Let’s turn around,” Mom had said. The whole time they were driving back to the pizzeria, Kevin kept saying, “It’s not our fault. The cashier didn’t notice.” But Mom just insisted. After supper. Karie went to her room and fell onto her bed.

When I was in third grade, we got five new computers in our classroom. Mrs. Brown was my third-grade teacher, and she acted like computers were scary, especially the new ones. She always needed to look at a how-to book and the computer at the same time. Even then , she got mixed up a lot. Then she had to call Mrs. Reed, the librarian, to come and show her what to do.
It was a Monday morning in May, and Mrs. Brown was sitting in front of a new computer in the back of the room. She was confused about a program we were supposed to use for a math project. My desk was near the computers, and I was watching her.
Mrs. Brown looked at the screen, and then she looked at this book, and then back at the screen again. Then she shook her head and let out a deep sigh (叹气). I could tell she was almost ready to call Mrs. Reed.
In fact, I was not good at using computers, either. But I knew how to turn them on and open programs, play games and type-simple things like that. So I got up from my desk, pointed at the screen, and said, “Mrs. Brown,if you double-click on that little thing right there, then the program will start running. And then you click on this, and that opens up the part about number lines.”
So Mrs. Brown did what I told her and the program started running. Because that’s the way it works and anybody knows that except Mrs.Brown.When the program started playing the music,
Mrs. Brown smiled a huge smile at me and said,“Jake, you’re wonderful!” And she said it so loud that every kid in the classroom stopped and turned to look at us,just in time to see Mrs. Brown pat ( 拍) me on the top of my head.

Mrs.Thompson stood in front of her class on the first day of school in the fall and told the children a white lie. Like most teachers, she looked at her pupils in the class and said that she loved them all the same, and that she would treat them all the same, too.
But it was impossible because in the front line, there was a little boy sitting lazily in his seat and didn’t show any interest in his study. His name was Teddy Stoddard, whom Mrs. Thompson had already noticed that he didn’t play with the other children and that his clothes were always untidy.
Now, Teddy was one of her students and she found that Teddy was the most unpleasant child in her class. Actually, she even began enjoying marking his papers with X’s and F’s at the top of the pages. She would probably have felt badly about her own behavior but the other children in the class never seemed to enjoy him, either.
Mrs. Thompson was required to review each child’s record each term, but she put Teddy’s record at the bottom of the pile and tried to put off the reading as late as possible. When she began to read, she was shocked to learn that Teddy had been an excellent student before his mother passed away. His second grade teacher even wrote, “Teddy is a bright and curious child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners with other children. He is a joy to have in class.” His third grade teacher added, “Although his mother’s death has been hard on him, Teddy continued to work hard. He tries to do his best but his father shows little interest in him and his home life will be a problem for him if steps aren’t taken soon.”
Unfortunately, Teddy’s problems were ignored and he started to avoid the other children and his behavior eventually became a problem in his sixth grade.

I grew up in a large family of twelve siblings (兄弟姐妹). We weren’t poor by most standards, but things were difficult for us. My parents never shared their financial worries, choosing instead to let us have a carefree childhood. But I knew that there were times they went without and that certain things my friends had wouldn’t be easy for me to get.
Back in those days, hot lunch was a luxury (奢侈) for the wealthier kids, and hot-lunch buyers sat separately from the students who brought cold lunch. My siblings and I brought lunch from home every day: homemade bread, three cookies, and a small apple. We would look on longingly as the rich kids proudly sat down with their steaming plates of fried chicken or fish sticks and cold milk, sweet peaches and delicious cake.
I never said anything, but my first grade teacher, Mrs. Caruso, must have seen the eagerness in my eyes. One day she quietly pressed a note into my hand and whispered, “Give this to your mother.”
I arrived home and gave my mom the note. She read it and smiled. “Well, Mrs. Caruso said because of all your hard work, she wants to buy your lunch tomorrow.” The next day, I proudly carried my tray of chicken across the cafeteria and took my seat at the hot-lunch table. Honestly, the food wasn’t as great as I had imagined, but I was pleased to be there and felt honored to be a part of the group.
One rainy day, Mrs. Caruso asked me to stay after school. My heart instantly sank. Surely, I must be in trouble! Did she know I hadn’t finished my math homework? Did she see me making fun of Billy on the playground?

![]() | Today, as our lives have greatly improved, do we still need this so-called "hardship education"? |
According to a recent survey of 2,020 people done by China Youth Daily, 81.8 percent of the interviewees supported hardship education including experiencing life in poor areas, outdoor training, taking part-time jobs, and doing housework.
Qiao Yu, from Tianjin Foreign Languages School, also supports the idea "Hardship helps us grow and be prepared for the difficulties of society," said the 18-year-old, who worked in a cake store this summer.
But while it contributes to studentsˈ development, "hardship education shouldnˈt be seen as simply making students suffer," Sun Yunxiao, director of the China Youth and Children Research Center told China Youth Daily. "It should follow teenagersˈ growth." Sun said that students could also do sports to learn to face difficulties, for doing sports can greatly strengthen their bodies and minds.
