On Jan. 14, 2020, Microsoft retired Windows 7 and stopped offering security updates (更新) for one of the most-loved versions of its operating system. The main reason was that maintaining them required resources and engineers. These could be expensive, especially as the company focused its efforts on new products and services.
Microsoft stopped adding new features to Windows7 in 2015, and it had regularly been reminding users of the end-of-life deadline (最后期限) and inviting them to equip Windows 10, which was growing quickly. But Windows 7 made up about 27 percent of desktop and laptops in October, 2019, according to Netmarket share, which tracks (跟踪) usage of different technologies. There are more than 1.5 billion Windows devices (装置) in use and at least 400 million of them are still running the out-of-date operating system. If Windows 7 continues to decrease at the current pace, its share will drop to 13 percent by 2021-but that’s still more than 100 million devices.
Hackers are always hunting for insecure devices, which makes us anxious. If a new bug appears in Windows 7, bad actors will have millions of devices to attack and infect with virus (病毒) at once. That’s why the company has an Extended Security Update program, which will run until January 2023. Organizations that want to continue using Windows 7 and receive bug patches have to pay $50 per device in the first year, $100 in the second year, and $200 in the third year to do so.

We often hear of the harm of social media to teens and young people, but our latest research on young girls and boys has revealed that social media is not always negative.
In some cases, we found that social media can positively influence their health and well-being, by helping them learn about healthy eating or new workouts to try. Besides, social media provides space for young people to talk to each other about issues of health.
For our study, conducted by researchers from the University of Birmingham and Orebro University, we invited over 1,300 young girls and boys, aged 13-18, from ten UK schools. We were interested in better understanding how young people use social media, and how they feel it impacts their health and well-being. To do this, we selected 84 participants from the main sample and had them take part in small group interviews.
The results showed that social media often had a positive influence on young people’s motivation for being physically active and on their ability to make conscious diet choices. Social media also allowed them to access the information they found inspirational, and learn about different apps they could use to be physically active or monitor their progress. They reported that likes, comments, and views on their social media posts also helped them stay motivated to exercise.
Encouragingly, the young people we spoke to were also highly discerning users of social media. They thought carefully about the content they were engaging with online. For instance, the teenagers reported that they would often ignore content that had the potential to lead to harm, such as images or videos that presented unrealistic workouts or expectations for their bodies.
While the risks should certainly not be overlooked, our findings show that social media can have a positive effect on young people’s health and well-being. A benefit of social media is that it provides real-time, low-cost information, and support from their peers. Making young people use social media safely, critically and responsibly may thus help them continue to lead a healthy life.
1. What is the main finding of the latest research mentioned in the text?A.Young people make better use of social media. |

As far as the Internet being a part of our lives — well, that train has left the station — there is no possibility of going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health? It might be, say researchers. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected with high blood pressure (血压)in a young group: teenagers.
The study results show that tens who spend at least 14 hours a week only online may cause high blood pressure, which makes your heart and blood vessels(血管) work too hard. Over time, this extra pressure increased your risk of a heart attack. High blood pressure can also cause other diseases.
The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old, took part in it. 134 of the teens are described as “heavy Internet users” And researchers find that out of these 134 tens, 26 have high blood pressure. The rescarchers say the study is the first to connect heavy web use with high blood pressure.
The lead researcher is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. She says, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life, but it shouldn't ruin us.” Ms Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to stop to have a rest regularly from their computers or smartphones and do some kinds of physical activities. She also suggests that parents shouldn't let their children use the Internet for more than two hours a day, five days a week.

The very thought of making immigration laws based on what is best for the American people seems to have been forgotten by many who focus on how to solve the problems of illegal immigration.
It is hard to look for “the ideal outcome” on immigration in the abstract. Economics professor Milton Friedman once said, “The best is the enemy of the good,” which to me meant that attempts to achieve an unachievable ideal can prevent us from reaching good outcomes that are possible in practice.
Too much of our current immigration controversy (争议) focuses on abstract ideals, such as “We are a nation of immigrants.” Of course we are a nation of immigrants. But we are also a nation of people who wear shoes. Does it follow that we should admit anybody who wears shoes?
The immigrants of today are very different from those who arrived here a hundred years ago. Moreover, the society in which they arrive is different. To me, it is better to build a wall around the welfare state. But the welfare state is already here-and, far from having a wall built around it, the welfare state is expanding in all directions. We do not have a choice between the welfare state and open borders.
Among other facts of life completely ignored by many advocates is that the free international movement of people is different from free international trade in goods. Buying cars or cameras from other countries is not the same as admitting people from those countries or any other countries. Unlike objects, people have cultures and not all cultures are compatible (相容的) with the culture in this country that has produced such benefits for the American people for so long. The United States has been discovering the hard way that admitting people with incompatible cultures has had serious consequences.
“Comprehensive (全面的) immigration reform” means doing everything all together in a rush, without time to look before we leap, and basing ourselves on abstract ideas about abstract people.

For elephants, at least, part of the answer may be the gene commonly known as p53, which also helps humans and many other animals repair DNA damaged during replication (复制). Elephants have an amazing 20 copies of this gene. Those copies, each with two variations produce a total of 40 proteins, compared with humans’ (and most animals’) single copy producing two proteins.
In mammals, p53 plays a crucial role in preventing mutated cells from turning into tumors (肿瘤). It works by pausing replication and then either initiating repair or causing cells to self-destruct if the damage is too extensive. Without action from p53, cancer can easily take hold: in more than half of all human cancers, the gene’s function has been lost through random mutations.
The scientists virtually modeled and studied carefully elephants’ 40 p53 proteins, finding two ways the gene could help elephants avoid cancer. First, the fact that elephants possess multiple copies lowers the chance of p53 no longer working because of mutations. Additionally, elephants’ p53 copies activate in response to varying mutations and so respond to damaged cells differently, which likely gives an edge when detecting and getting rid of mutations.
These “remarkable” results imply that elephants have a series of means though which p53 can operate, says Sue Haupt, a cell biologist who was not involved in the work. This points to “exciting possibilities for exploring powerful new approaches to cancer protection in humans,” she adds.
Study co-author Robin Fahraeus and his colleagues are now following up on these results using blood samples from an African elephant at the Vienna Zoo. They are exploring how its p53 proteins interact with damaged cells and plan to compare those findings with results from human cells.

She had made a “huge” mistake — at least in the eyes of the school — by wearing a top that showed her collarbone. It was against the school’s dress code.
“This is ridiculous!” Stacie Dunn, Hughes’s mom, wrote on the social media site Facebook. “Something needs to change!”
The incident has become an Internet sensation. Across the US, schools like Woodford are being criticized for their dress codes. Some say the rules are especially unfair to young women.
Over half of US public schools have a dress code, and they are often different for girls and boys, according to the National Center for Education Statistics in the US. Some dress codes, for example, ban skirts and ask for pants to be at least knee-length.
Some have pointed out that these rules are mostly for female students. Women’s clothes are usually cut to be more fitted and shorter, while men’s clothes are longer and looser. In practice, more women will be caught breaking dress codes. The New York Post reported that last year, one school in Staten Island, New York gave 200 dress code detentions in two weeks-90 percent of which went to female students.
Some school administrators say they simply want students to dress professionally to prepare students for their future careers. But others have told female students that their clothes present a “distraction” to male students. That idea is being criticized.
The “distraction” argument is unfair to women, critics say. It suggests that exposed skin means that you want criticism or sexual advances.
“These dress codes mean that girls are getting very clear messages that men have a right to your body in public spaces and it’s socially acceptable, but you will be punished,” Laura Bates, a co-founder of the Everyday Sexism Project, a project that aims to promote equality between men and women, told The Atlantic.
Some students have taken action to change the situation. They have started online campaigns and made short films to build public support.
Certain schools have now chosen to think again about their dress codes with parents and students. Even Woodford County High School — home of the “collarbone” ban — is thinking again about its policies. But, at least for now, the dress code debate is far from over.
