Helping Your Kids to Be Interested in Sports
Being active and moving is something that is so important for us all, especially for children.
It is such a good idea to lead by example when you are a parent. This is true for a variety of aspects, but especially forgetting children involved in sport.
If something is dull, it will be hard for children to be enthusiastic about it. This will make them resent(讨厌) it, which is not a good thing for later in life. If they show particular skill and learn to play sport, then more practice and training can come in.
Whatever sport your child chooses to play, encourage them and make it fun, and then it will be something that they will want to carry on doing as they go about the rest of their lives.
A.They won’t be interested in sports if you’re not. |
B.here are some other tips that you would share with them. |
C.Share your enthusiasm and it will help to lighten a passion. |
D.So think about ways that can get them to be active in the sports. |
E.How active a child is will impact their overall health and learning. |
F.Apart from leading by example, you could also share your favorite team. |
G.However, the main message forgetting children into sport is to keep it fun. |

But if you’ve never done it before, what’s the best way to go about it? Well, many people make use of a PT — that’s a personal trainer. This might be because they’re wet behind the ears or maybe they just don’t want the trouble of designing their own workout plan. A PT will create a plan based on the aim of an individual. They will tailor it to your current abilities and, better still, they will teach you how to move in a proper way.
However, the trade-off with a PT is the price. Each hourly session can be steep considering the double whammy of having to pay both the PT and membership of the gym. If you are at all strapped for cash then regular sessions might be out of your budget.
So what’s left? Well, if you have the grit for it, you can make your own plan. It’s relatively easy to do if you have the know-how. But before you do, here are some basic pointers.
First, keep your fitness goal in mind. Are you looking to slim down, bulk up, or get shredded? Whatever it is, make sure you choose to be in pursuit of that goal. Next, do your research. Social media is full of fitness videos and advice. Watch as many as possible, but make sure to be critical of them — everyone has a different body. Finally, keep your feet on the ground. Be patient with yourself and set realistic goals — it takes at least three months to see realistic body changes. A good workout is difficult and challenging, but never painful. Pain means you are damaging yourself.

However, at the Rudyard Kipling Primary School in Brighton, things were getting too hard, so the teachers decided something had to be done. The school’s new rules, which restrict(限制)physical activities and encourage pupils only to touch if they are playing friendlier games, have attracted a lot of attention.
Most people say that they are a bad restriction. Parents of children at the school, in Brighton, East Sussex, talked about the bizarre rule — saying their kids were now bored at playtime. A teacher for the school defended(辩护)the rules, saying, “We want to make sure the playground is a happy, safe and calm place where everyone can enjoy their lunchtime running around and getting the exercise that we know is important to them.”
Some people say that Rudyard Kipling Primary School’s decision is a good one because it makes the playground more fun for everyone. Not all children enjoy playing rough(剧烈的)games or sports at playtime. Friendlier games ensure everyone can join in. The teachers only have the pupils’ best interests at heart, so they should be trusted to make the right decision. Besides, if someone gets hurt in the playground, that could distract(分心)the teachers from other accidents.
However, some people think it’s an overreaction. Sometimes physical games can lead to injuries, but banning(禁止)such activities is unreasonable. In fact, it is only during physical games that you can build up your ability to recover quickly from falling over. Even if these physical activities aren’t your favorite way to spend break time, it’s difficult to see why they will be completely banned. Each pupil should be able to decide what they want to do. Besides, schools should be happy that their students want to exercise between classes as this will keep them fit and healthy, and teachers should encourage this, not prevent it.

“In 2006, a business client challenged me one evening in a bar to a 36-hour walk across 54 miles of the West Highland Way, and I foolishly said ‘yes’,” James said. “He then rang me the next day to tell me we would be running it.”
At the time, James was 20 kilograms overweight and the longest he had run before that was just under 8 miles, but he managed to finish that run and has never looked back.
According to a report, two-thirds of adults in the U.K. are overweight, one-fifth suffering from depression (抑郁). The huge influence caused by modern lifestyle has worsened these issues. We are aware of the importance of exercise in everyday life, and no amount of virtual meetings can make up for direct social contact. James said, “Only one thing can fix these problems — trail running.”
What is unique about trail running, he explained, is that “it reconnects us to our beautiful nature and connects our physical, mental and spiritual aspects, as well as providing us with an experience which can connect us to other people”.
Inspired, he quit his city life of working 16-hour-plus-days as a banker, and spent more time in trails and mountains.
James is now in charge of the trail running company Run the Wild. He said every run has been a gift following a physical operation in 2015, even though his doctor told that he could hardly run again. He said, “The outdoors is such a great place for us all to experience.”

Alexandra Johnstone at the University of Aberdeen in the UK and her colleagues recruited 30 adults who were overweight or obese and had no other underlying health conditions. The researchers then provided participants with food and beverages for 10weeks.
For the first week, the participants followed a weight maintenance(保持) diet, consuming 1.5 times the number of calories needed at their resting metabolic(新陈代谢的) rate. Calories were evenly distributed across three meals each day.
For the following four weeks, participants were divided into two groups: 14people ate 45 percent of their calories at breakfast, 35 percent at lunch and 20 percent at dinner. The other 16 ate 20 percent of their calories at breakfast, 35 percent at lunch and 45 percent at dinner. Both groups were restricted to the calories required at their resting metabolic rate, and had 35 percent of calories from fat, 30 percent from protein and 35 percent from carbohydrates.
After the four weeks, both groups followed the weight maintenance diet again for one week before switching to the opposite diet for the next four weeks. So, people on the big breakfast diet ate the big dinner diet and vice versa(反之亦然).
The researchers found that there was little difference in how much weight participants lost when they ate more in the morning or the evening:people lost an average of 3.33 kilograms during the large breakfast diet compared with an average of 3.38 kilograms during the large dinner diet. That suggests calories are metabolised the same regardless of when they are consumed, says Johnstone.
One limitation of this study is its length, says Mindy Patterson at Texas Woman’s University. Previous research has found that front-loading calories earlier in the day leads to significant differences in weight loss after five weeks, not four, she says.“Perhaps they should have gone a little bit longer in duration and then we would have seen that difference.”

Many music studies look at the long-term benefits of being a music listener or participating in a music program as a child. But can listening to music help us connect and empathize(产生共鸣) with someone right at the moment? A new study aimed to find it out.
In this study, 60 university students were asked to watch several 15-second videos in which a person recounts an autobiographical(自传体的) experience. In some cases, people in the video talk about a relatively ordinary event, like moving into a new apartment, while other stories contain strong emotional content, like recalling a terrible accident or a loved one’s death.
While the students watched these videos, the researchers randomly played either “emotionally neutral” music or very sad music in the background. After watching each video, the students expressed how much sympathy they had for the person in the video, and how much they wanted to help that person. They were also tested on their social reasoning skills—how well they understood the perspective of the person in the video. All of these could be signs of empathic connection.
Results showed that people watching the sad videos felt more sadness themselves and more sympathy for the other person than those watching the neutral videos—not a big surprise. But these empathic feelings were strengthened by listening to sad music. The music had no effect, however, on whether or not the students could reason out the other person’s experience and understand cognitively what they might be thinking or feeling.
While music is not the only way—other art forms, like fiction and dancing, have also been shown to increase empathy, for example —music could be a powerful tool. “It’d be very interesting to extend our finding further, to see if listening to music in a social context can enhance our real-world ability to empathize with and feel sympathy for others in the long term,” says the lead researcher Brennan McDonald.

In fact, linguists suggest that around 6,500 languages are now used for daily communication. The diversity in languages, however, is declining. Over 400 languages were lost over the last 100 years, and about 50% of the languages remaining today are expected to disappear over the next century. In other words, one language will go extinct every two weeks.
Thousands of the current living languages are spoken by indigenous individuals. These languages are usually only spoken at home by older generations and not taught in schools, and thus children do not become fluent speakers. Additionally, once they become adults, they are less likely to need knowledge of the indigenous language in their daily lives and instead adapt more commonly spoken tongues like English. Because of this movement toward more powerful languages, the language will become extinct over time.
Researchers are currently recording and documenting some of the most severely endangered languages to ensure a record remains after the last speaker is long gone. The idea behind this practice is that the language could be revived at some point in the future if a person or group of people should be interested in bring the tongue back to life. Another way of protecting languages is by teaching children the language. By encouraging children to study and become fluent in a language, linguists hope it will survive through them and be passed along to future generations.
