Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy, while her wealthy English parents were travelling in Europe. As a child, she travelled to many places with her family and learned how to speak several languages.
When Nightingale was 17, she told her family that she was going to help sick people. Her parents did not approve, but Nightingale was determined.
She travelled to hospitals all over Europe. She saw that doctors were working too hard. She saw that patients died because they did not get enough care. Nightingale felt that women could be doing more to help doctors take care of sick people.
Nightingale knew that in order for nurses to do more, they needed special training in how to take care of sick people. Nightingale went to a hospital in Germany to study nursing. Then she returned to London and became the head of a group of women called Gentlewomen During Illness. These women cared for sick people in their homes.
In 1854, England was fighting a war with Russia. No reporters wrote about the terrible conditions in the hospitals that cared for the wounded. People demanded that something be done about it. A leader of the government asked Florence Nightingale to take some nurses into the war hospitals. So, in November 1854,Nightingale finally got to work in a hospital.
She took along 38 nurses whom she had trained herself.
At first, the doctors on the battlefields did not want Nightingale and her nurses in their hospitals. They did not believe that women could help. But in fact, the nurses did make a difference. They worked around the clock, tending the sick. Thanks to their hard work, many wounded soldiers survived.
After the war, Nightingale and her nurses were treated like heroes. Finally, in 1860, she started the Nightingale School for Nurses. In time, thanks to Florence Nightingale, nursing became an important part of medicine.

It all started when Alejandro discovered that commercial candles gave his mom headaches. He figured there must be a way to make an all-natural candle that was safe. So he dug into the world of wax and found a soy-based wax that is chemical-free. He also found natural oils to add scent, and Smell of Love Candles was born.
Alejandro sells his candles at local fairs and to his neighbors. Then his online orders began picking up. In the fall of 2022, he started seventh grade-and opened his first retail store at Tysons Corner Center, a regional mall outside Washington, D.C. As his candles become a much bigger operation, he is always experimenting with new scents like Donut Kill My Vibe, the perfect after-school scent that gets you in the mood for a snack.
Alejandro started his business to build his college fund. But running a business is about more than making money for him. He sets aside a portion of the profit to give back to the community. Some of the money supports the local homeless shelter, and some goes into a scholarship fund for kids who need a little help with college.
His mother, Patricia, is impressed with her son and loves to spend time with him as his business grows. She says it has strengthened their bond to be together and see how his mind works, adding, “It’s been really inspiring.”
Alejandro has big goals and an even bigger heart. With all the problems that seem to rob many of us of the motivation to move forward, Alejandro has chosen to focus on a solution that works, not only for him, but as an inspiration to others, no matter their age.

Wrapped in a loop (圈)of red silk hung from the ceiling, Jennifer Bricker climbs and twists to the music. Her head hangs down and her strong arms let go as she balances on her back, high above the ground — a move that is all the more daring because she has no legs.
Jennifer was a few months old when she was adopted by Sharon and Gerald Bricker. She had big brown eyes, a bright smile, and huge amounts of energy. When a doctor advised her adoptive parents to carry her around in a kind of bucket (桶),they refused.
Jennifer soon learned to walk and run on her hands and bottom, and grew up fearlessly climbing trees and bouncing on the trampoline (蹦床)with her three older brothers.“My parents didn’t treat me differently so I didn’t grasp the concept that I was different .1 knew I didn't have legs but that wasn’t stopping me from doing the things I wanted to do.”
At the age of three she was fitted with artificial legs, but she never really took to them she moved more freely without them.
In 1996 the Olympic Games took place in Atlanta. Jennifer loved to watch the women's gymnastics team, and especially adored the 14-year-old Dominique Moceanu who competed for the US. When Moceanu and the women’s team won the gold, Jennifer decided she was going to be a gymnast, too. She took up power tumbling, which involves performing floor exercises down a runway. But Jennifer did not want any allowances to be made for her disability.
At the age of 10 she took part in the Junior Olympics and by age 11 she was the tumbling champion for the state of Illinois.
Jennifer now travels the world as an inspirational speaker and acts as an aerial performer.

Storytellers were once known as “liars”. This was not to say their stories weren’t true. But they were often exaggerated in colorful ways that brought a story to life.
I grew up in a family of “liars”. They all told stories. And I grew up to earn my living by writing stories. The stories I write about my family are always true. But I can’t always be sure of every detail, so I rely on imagination to fill in the gaps.
My grandmother’s stories changed a bit each time she told them, and I smiled at how her changes made a story better. I loved hearing her stories. And my grandchildren seem to love hearing mine.
“Tell it again, Nana!” they say. I do, and they start laughing before I get to the funny part. Recently, they begged to hear a Halloween story I’ve told countless times. Here it is:
Once upon a time, when I was 10, my mother told me to make costumes (服装) and take my brothers to go trick-or-treating. Denton was 4. He looked like a monkey. Joe was 6 and totally blind. I threw a sheet over his head but forgot to tell him he was a ghost (鬼).
We knocked on the first door and waited. The door flew open, and we all shouted, “Trick-or-treat!” Mrs. Fisher patted Joe’s head through the sheet and said, “What a cute little ghost!”
And Joe yelled (叫喊), “I am not a ghost!”
True story. My grandchildren love it. They beg me to tell it again and again.
I hope to tell them more stories as they grow older. I want them to remember me and the big, crazy family I grew up in. Stories are the unbreakable threads that bind generations together, tell us who we are and give us hope.
My grandchildren have never met their “Great Uncle Joe”, but they won’t soon forget him. To them, he will always be, not a ghost, but very lovable.

Zara has been on the plane her whole life. Her mother is an amateur pilot, and her father is a professional one. Over 80 hours of flight recorded and countless more in the future, she received her pilot's license in 2020.
To pay for her two-month journey, Zara has sold her car and sought out different sponsors (赞助商). Also concerned about the environmental effects of her trip, she plans to spend $710 on tree projects to make up for her carbon footprint (碳排放量). Her small, single-engine plane is customized for her needs and includes radio and satellite communications.
Zara has faced challenges such as bad weather, being forced to fly low over the ocean, and failing radio contact. “I’m really happy to be on the ground, to be honest,” she says in a video posted after her arrival in Kulusuk, Greenland. “The first little bit was fine, but then suddenly the clouds were getting lower and lower. At one point I was 600 feet above the ocean, which was pretty scary.” She lost radio contact 30 minutes into that trip and had two hours without communications.
While setting a world record is Zara’s aim, her main purpose is to inspire others. She said, “Growing up, I was really into aviation (航空), science, tech, engineering, and mathematics. But I didn’t see many other girls in those fields.” So, with this flight, she hopes to encourage and motivate other girls and young women to pursue their dreams and reduce the gender (性别) gap in STEM.

Berners-Lee, who worked in a small office at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is the creator of the World Wide Web. The creation of the Web is so important that some people compare Berners-Lee to Johann Gutenberg, who invented printing by movable type (活字) in the fifteenth century.
Berners-Lee was born in England in 1955. His parents, who helped design the world’s first commercially (商业地) available computer, gave him a great love of mathematics and learning.
In 1980,Berners-Lee went to work at CERN, a physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, where he had a lot of materials to learn quickly. He had a poor memory for facts and wanted to find a way to help him keep track of things he couldn’t remember. He invented a software program that allowed him to create a document that had links to other documents. He continued to develop his idea through the 1980s. He wanted to find a way to connect the knowledge and creativity of people all over the world.
In 1991,his project became known as the World Wide Web. The number of Internet users started to grow quickly. However, Berners-Lee was not completely happy with the way the Web had developed. He thought it had become a passive tool for so many people, not the tool for creativity that he had imagined.
In 1999,Berners-Lee published a book called Weaving the Web, in which he answers questions he is often asked,“What were you thinking when you invented the Web?” “What do you think of it now?” “Where is the Web going to take us in the future?”
