Whatever stage of life you’re at, wherever you go and whatever project you do in GDA, you’ll create positive changes in poor and remote communities.
We work with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. Most of our volunteers are aged 17-24. Now we need volunteer managers aged 25-75. They are extremely important in the safe and effective running of our programs. We have such roles as project managers and communication officers.
Depending on which role you choose, you could help to increase a community’s access to safe drinking water, or help to protect valuable local cultures. You might also design an adventure challenge to train young volunteers.
Not only will you help our young volunteers to develop personally, you’ll also learn new skills and increase your cultural awareness. You may have chances to meet new people who’ll become your lifelong friends.
This summer we have both 4-week and 7-week programs:

Lucie Rie: The Adventure of Pottery, Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge
4 March-25 June
It showcases potter (陶艺师) Lucie Rie’s ground-breaking practice across six decades. The potter was a key figure in British post-war art, having moved away in 1938 from Vienna. Her technical innovations permanently extended the language of studio pottery. Her achievements range from functional tableware to elegant bowls and vases decorated with sgraffito.
Soutine |Kossoff, Hastings Contemporary, East Sussex
1 April-24 September
It’s the first show to explore the relationship between Leon Kossoff, whose thickly applied paint landscapes of post-war London are well known, and Paris trained artist Chaim Soutine. Kossoff discovered Soutine’s works in the early 1950s and was greatly influenced by it. The two artists shared an Eastern European Jewish heritage, and both created excellent works from the stuff of everyday life.

When it comes time for the holiday shopping season, we’re extra choosy about the countless technology products that we will buy and give to friends and family. Here’s what impressed editors, reporters and producers the most in 2019.
Lumos Matrix helmet
I recently bought a Lumos Matrix helmet(头盔)(﹩229)with built-in lights to make riding my bike at night a lot safer and less stressful. It’s a regular pain point for bikers like me to make sure careless drivers see you, especially when it’s dark. This does help.
-Matt Mcfarland, Writer
Goodreads app
Although this isn’t a gift, the free Goodreads app is a game changer. At the beginning of 2019, I promised myself I’d read at least one new book every month. I set a goal of 12 books on Goodreads and use it to track my progress, keep a list of books I’m interested in and check out what friends and others on the app were recommending. I read 35 books this year! (That’s up from five books last year.) Goodreads feels like one of the rare feel-good social networks.
-Kaya Yurieff, Tech Reporter
Ember coffee cup
I drink my coffee slowly, so it has routinely cooled by the time I get halfway through it. For my birthday, my mum bought me a cup (﹩99), which keeps my coffee warm until I finish it without reheating. I can also set the temperature I want. It makes my mornings so much easier.

Designed and produced by Chinese maker Changzhou Xili Car Industry, Changli, and Changli Nemeca is a small electric car that has got lots of attention online after being advertised as the world's most affordable electric car. Calling this thing a car is kind of stretching it a bit, as its electric motor can only produce 1.16 horsepower, and it has a top speed of only 30. km/h. Still, it does come with some interesting features, like air-conditioning, independent suspension, heater, radio and even reverse-view camera. But the most impressive thing about Changli in my opinion, is that you can have it sent to your doorstep.
Anyone who can just order Changli Nemeca online can have it mailed to them without having to pay extra money to the dealership. Changli measures 2.5 meters long, 1.5 meter wide, and 1.8 meters high, weighs 323 kilograms and can carry up to 30 kilograms.
The two-seat version starts at $ 930($ 1,200 with larger batteries), but you can choose a three-seat version as well, which will cost you $ 1,50. The battery of the small electric car is between 40 and 10 kilometers per charge and the batteries take between 7 and 10 hours to charge.
While Changli Nemeca won't be going head to head with other electric cars anytime soon it's still an amazing piece of machinery for the price. Where else are you going to find full functional electric cars that you can have mailed to your door.
1. Why does the author think Changli electric car is the most impressive?A.Because of its design. | B.Because it's convenient. |
C.Because it's light and cheap. | D.Because of its appearance. |
A.Its producer. | B.Its users. | C.Its production. | D.Its features. |
A.By making comparisons. | B.By listing numbers. |

Prices are more likely to end in .99 more than any other pair of numbers — and certainly more than the even .00. We probably don’t think twice about buying something for $5.99 or $16.99, but it is a little strange when you think about it. Why aren’t prices just even dollar amounts? Is it a carefully organized marketing plan to get you to spend more?
Well, basically … yes. But there’s really nothing that is carefully planned about it. It’s actually pretty simple. “It’s a type of psychological (心理的) pricing,” says Julie Ramhold, a consumer (消费者) expert. “Because we read from left to right, we pay less attention to the end of the number versus the beginning.” This is especially effective if you’re just quickly reading several prices in a row. Therefore, the first number will definitely stand out to you more.
Of course, we still know that $9.99 is basically ten dollars, not nine dollars. But the $.99 trick takes advantage of the way our brains process prices. When we see a price of $9.99, we associate it as part of the $9-$9.99 range rather than the $10-$10.99 range. “Consumers don’t want to go beyond a certain type, so even a penny less may make a huge psychological difference,” explains Subimal Chatterjee, a successful and respected teaching professor of Marketing at Binghamton University School of Management.
This strategy is especially effective when it’s a change in the number of digits (数位). $99.99 is just inside the two-digits range, so it seems like a score … even though you basically are paying a hundred dollars. And, of course, the sellers are getting the most money they possibly could within that lower range, because 99 cents is only a cent below the higher range.
1. What does the first paragraph say about goods in stores?A.They are of high quality. | B.They are available at a discount. |
C.They tend to be priced at $.99. | D.They are always in great demand. |
A.First come first serve. | B.Psychological pricing. |
C.Small profits but quick returns. | D.Buy one and get one free. |
A.The bag costs not more than $100. |
B.The bag is sold at a reasonable price. |
C.The price is a lucky number. |
