I never believed in lucky coins. But one day as I was mowing the lawn (修剪草坪), I noticed a shiny object some five yards away. I stopped the machine to go and see     1     had caught my eye. Just as I bent over to pick up the object, the machine exploded behind me. I     2     (stand) there, frightened but unhurt. I     3     (save) by the shiny object—a coin. I now believe in lucky coins and stop to pick them up whenever I see them.

A man stopped at a flower shop to order some       1       (flower) to be sent to his mother who lived two hundred miles away. When he got out of his car he noticed a young girl sitting on the roadside     2     (cry). He asked her what was wrong and she     3    (reply), “I wanted to buy a red rose for my mother,     4     I only have seventy cents, but the rose costs two dollars.”     5     a smile on his face, the man said, “Come on in with me. I’ll buy you a rose. He bought the little girl her rose and ordered     6     (he) own mother’s flowers. As they were leaving he offered the girl     7     ride home.     8     (happy) she said, “Yes, please! You can take me to my mother.” She directed him to a cemetery (墓地),     9     she placed the rose on a freshly dug grave (坟墓). The man returned to the flower shop, canceled (取消，撤销) the mail order, picked up a bunch of flowers and     10     (drive) the two hundred miles to his mother house.”
