Waste Not, Want Not

“More?” asked Oliver as he held up his empty bowl. But there was no “more” for the little orphan boy from Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist, only the scowl(不悦之色) of Mr. Bumble, the mean man in charge of the orphanage. In the 18th-century England, a full stomach was only for the rich, not for poor orphans     1     Oliver.

Three hundred years later, it is hard to imagine anyone being hungry. We live in a time     2    food supplies are abundant(充裕的). There is so much food that the world throws away—about 1.3 billion tonnes each year, roughly one-third of the food     3    (produce) for human consumption. That amount of wastage is immoral and expensive. It is also preventable.

Most waste food is in the form of fruits and vegetables     4    are no longer fresh. Packaged foods are also tossed out because they have reached their sell-by dates and may no longer be safe to eat. This can be expensive for supermarkets, but they recover most of the cost by charging their customers     5    (high) prices.

One supermarket chain in China, however, is aiming to solve the problem of wastage and high prices by going digital. Freshippo, owned by the Internet giant Alibaba, lets customers use their smartphones to shop. With the Freshippo app, they can scan and instantly pay for the products put in their shopping carts. This allows the management     6    (track) purchases in real time and re-stock items quickly. It can also keep them informed of which items to buy more of. This unique way of shopping is designed to reduce costs, which results in some of the savings     7    (pass) on to customers.

Although Freshippo is taking steps to respond to the food waste crisis, there is another problem that has to be addressed: our overall attitude toward food. We may be taking     8    too much for granted. This year we have seen big crop losses because of an invasion of armyworms(草地夜蛾). China     9    (lose) as many as one million pigs to African swine fever(非洲猪瘟) since the summer of 2018. This year’s food problems are a good reminder not to be wasteful: Always clean your plate in the cafeteria, and always ask for a doggy bag(打包袋) in a restaurant if there is food remaining. Never throw away an apple just because it has a small brown spot, and never ask for “more”     10    you are really hungry.
